1 HE EA MAKAMAE A monthly publication by the American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc. SY , Issue #3 HONOLULU, OAHU, HAWAII November 2014 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Bill Lee, P.E. The great ASHRAE year continues - There were 49 attendees at the October meeting. Thank you to our Do s and Don ts speaker C.J. Courbet of Fujitsu for his talk on Cutting costs on VRF systems. Thank you to our main program speakers, Les Taniyama of PSIG and Blake Araki of UH Facilities for their sharing of the UH Manoa project Moore Hall Chiller plant renovation. It is so good to hear of projects that not only save energy, but are helping our state and benefiting our children. Thanks Blake for having the courage to do things a little differently. Thanks Les for sharing your expertise. Anyone who has talked to Les knows that he puts his heart and soul into his projects. We need to spotlight more of the great projects that we are doing in Hawaii. So I urge you to submit some projects for the ASHRAE Technical Awards. We have a local, regional, and society level competitions. If you have worked on a project that is at least 1 year in operation or know of any projects please contact Lori Arakawa our Technology Awards Chair. I also wanted let everyone know that the YEA Young Engineers of ASHRAE has started a Technical training meeting to help young engineers gain the knowledge they need to succeed in our industry. The first meeting was held on Oct. 21 st and there was a total attendance of 34. It was a great session on Chiller plant lead by Richard Miller of VSI. Richard Miller and Willie Diguc are leading our YEA committee. The next session is Nov. 18 th and will feature R.J. Ritter on Building Controls. Starts at 5 pm at InSynergy 2 nd floor conference room. If you would like to share your expertise on an HVAC subject for a session please contact Willie or Richard. Lastly, I just wanted to highlight some of the behind the scenes people that keep our local ASHRAE chapter running. This month I would like to meet our Programs committee Co-Chaired by Ryan Chang and Willie Diguc. This is one of the most important committees since they need to make sure everything is set for the monthly meeting. From the set up, speakers, evaluation, and advertisements. Ryan Chang is the Owner of TAB Engineering, which he started by himself. He does testing and balancing and commissioning of HVAC systems. Coming from a design background he has a wealth of knowledge of HVAC systems. Willie Diguc works at Oahu Plumbing and Sheetmetal he is one of our young engineers who not to many years ago was introduced to the HVAC world through Prof. Ting s HVAC class. He not only helps with the Program committee but also with the YEA committee. He is one or our bright young stars of ASHRAE Hawaii. Thank you Ryan, and Willie for making the programs happen this year. See you all at the November meeting. Bill Page 1

It uses enough energy to continuously power 200,000 homes. a According to Google, the energy it takes to conduct 100 searches on its site is equivalent to a 60- watt light bulb burning for 28 minutes. Google uses about kwh of energy to answer the average search query, which translates into about 0.2 g of carbon dioxide released. So the next time you run your Google search, think about how much energy it takes to get an answer. a Albanesius, Chloe. How Much Electricity Does Google Consume Each Year? PC Mag. September 8, Accessed: February 8, Energy Conservation Tip: Get rid of those phantom loads! Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power.
