Gayle Lichti, Z Utah State President Hello Sisters! We hope you are having a fun and relaxing summer and are enjoying the many P.E.O. parties and activities that are taking place all over the state. Summer is a great time to think about those special friends who we feel would enjoy being a part of our sisterhood. Perhaps you and a sister or two could invite them for coffee or lunch and let them know of the wonderful opportunities for friendship and philanthropic service that we have to offer! Good luck and good times to you as you plan your upcoming year. We look forward to seeing you all at the fall fundraiser, A Night Out at the McCune Mansion on September 28. It will be hosted by Chapters R & V and is an event you won t want to miss! Lovingly, Gayle Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - July 2014 Page 1 of 7
Build Bridges With a Buddy Chapter By Gayle Lichti, Z Utah State President In the spirit of building bridges, it was announced at Convention that each local chapter has been randomly assigned a buddy chapter for the year. This will be a fun way to get to know your sisters from other chapters. Even though chapter location may limit some of the activities you are able to participate in, we hope you all have a good time with this. Below is a list of activity suggestions and the chapter match-ups. Have fun! A & C F & AH M & Q R & AJ B & AD H & AN N & AM T & AE D & Z J & AL O & Y W & AI E & V L & X P & U AC & AK AA & AO Suggestions for possible buddy chapter activities 1) Exchange holiday cards and pictures. 2) Exchange a history of your chapters. 3) Have an idea exchange of programs, membership issues, etc. 4) Invite your buddy chapter to a meeting, fundraiser, or social. 5) Hold a joint fundraiser or social. 6) Arrange to attend Founders Day or other state activity together. 7) Gather in groups of five to 10 for lunch or coffee. Chapters Marketing for a Good Cause By Gretchen Freeman, Z Our Utah website features a "classified ads" section for sales that benefit our scholarship projects. What a great way to support our cause while purchasing a must-have item! From jewelry pouches to pin holders and Western art, these are all items offered for sale by our sister Utah chapters with all proceeds going directly to support projects. Most recently, Chapter Z is offering an antique ca oak icebox with its original tin interior and brass hardware. Check out these deals on our website under "Marketplace" on the left-hand menu. You'll be sold! Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - July 2014 Page 2 of 7
ELF Streamlines Process By Gina Rowe, AN Utah Representative, P.E.O Educational Loan Fund At 107 years strong, ELF is the oldest philanthropy in our sisterhood. And as of May 1, ELF moved to an online chapter recommendation and student application format. This streamlined the process for chapters to submit their recommendations for a loan recipient through the ELF page on the P.E.O. International website.. ELF Stats: The current interest rate on ELF loans is 3 percent. The maximum loan is $12,000 for all programs of study except doctoral degrees. The maximum loan for doctoral degrees is $20,000 (Ph.D., medical, law, etc.). Visit to view a video of ELF recipient, Toni Jacobson, who spoke at the international convention in Dallas. (From the home page, click on P.E.O. Projects/ Philanthropies, scroll down to the ELF section and click on the video link for the ELF 2013 Recipient Presentation. As with many project recipient stories, her story is powerful and inspiring. Make it your chapter goal this year to identify, interview and recommend a qualified woman for an ELF loan. It s a life-changing opportunity! President s Reception is September 20 Chapter Z invites you to join us at the President's Reception honoring Gayle Lichti on Saturday, September 20 from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Riverside Country Club, 2701 N. University Ave., Provo. Watch for further information and RSVP directions later this summer. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - July 2014 Page 3 of 7
Chapter AM Expresses Loving Concern By Sandy Paige, AM Chapter AM is a busy B&B chapter and heartily supports its Ways and Means projects. It has donated to six International and six State P.E.O. philanthropies and actively searches for candidates for the philanthropies. Our projects chairman had calling cards printed for AM members so that when we meet a prospective scholarship recipient, they had contact information at their fingertips. The chapter has encouraged a single mother of two who for eight years has juggled job, school, and motherhood on a shoestring budget. AM has encouraged her from the time she started advanced education and helped her win several P.E.O. scholarships. With only one more semester to complete her education degree, the chapter is continuing to support her. The chapter also wanted to help young women nominated every year from the local alternative high school, who for various reasons, could not compete well for the STAR award. Through individual efforts, members sold items, held dinner fundraisers and simply donated money to these women. These activities will provide additional funds for two new Chapter AM awards. In the words of American author Patti Digh: Generosity has little to do with giving gifts, and everything to do with giving space to others to be who they are. What s Happening with Cottey? By Anne Wakefield, AH Chair, Utah Cottey College Committee The P.E.O Advisory Committee has started a student referral initiative, whose goal is to receive from each chapter information about an outstanding rising sophomore, junior, or senior high school girl. The Power of One is evident. We will make a difference for Cottey, one referral at a time. Cottey will track online student referrals until December 1. Each chapter that completes an online student referral will receive a certificate of participation at the 2015 State Convention. The online referral form can be found at So far, Utah has ZERO referrals. Reach out to coaches, teachers, counselors, neighbors and church leaders for the names of outstanding students and Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - July 2014 Page 4 of 7
submit those referrals online! Maybe one of those students would be interested in the Cottey C for Yourself Weekend? The next event is planned for October Interested students will spend two nights in one of the Cottey suites, meet with faculty and current students and tour the state-of-the-art facilities. They will also receive the latest information about admission and financial aid. More information can be found on the Cottey website, click here. Interested student may be eligible for assistance with travel expenses for this visit. Please contact the Cottey Committee at peoutah.cottey@gmail.com if you need additional information about travel assistance or the C for Yourself Weekend. Night Out to Benefit Scholarships By Glenda LeHoux, V This year, Chapters R and V are trying something new and different to raise funds for our P.E.O. philanthropies. We are very excited to host an enchanting evening in the magnificent McCune Mansion with wonderful refreshments and an exciting silent auction. so that we will be able to welcome them that evening. This event will take place on Sunday, September 28 from 5-7 p.m. The cost is $35 per person. The McCarthey family and the McCune Mansion have graciously and generously offered to waive most of the costs, so that a very large part of that $35 dollars will go directly to philanthropies. As you write your check to the 2014 P.E.O. Scholarship Fund, remember all the worthy scholarship recipients who will be helped by this donation. Checks should be sent to Pat Curtis, 2278 South Scenic Drive, Salt Lake City by September 12. Your check is your reservation. If you are bringing guests with you that evening, please include their names with your reservation check There will also be a silent auction that evening. We have asked each chapter to donate a silent auction item in the form of gift card, voucher, or gift certificate for another night out. The possibilities are endless. Chapter AM, St. George has already donated two nights at a bed and breakfast and two 18-hole rounds of golf. Have fun as a chapter planning your silent auction donation. There will be lucky winners going home from the Night Out, but, the real winners will be the women helped by our P.E.O. philanthropy. If you have any questions concerning the silent auction, please contact Glenda LeHoux at or by at lehoux1@msn.com. Utah P.E.O. Sister to Sister News - July 2014 Page 5 of 7
Period of Instruction Materials on Website By Nancy Williams, Y Utah State Vice President The Period of Instruction Stepping Up to be The Search and Rescue Team! was an interactive session at the 2014 Utah State Convention. It was intended to train chapter delegates, PSPs and Convention visitors to conduct a chapter health meeting during the meeting year. After all, Unless we change our direction, we are likely to end up where we are headed. Those attending Convention developed a map of where their chapter was in the indicators of chapter health. They learned to identify areas of praise or question for their chapters. Because awareness leads to action and action leads to success, they were then taught a simple method leading chapters in setting goals. Using the chapter goals, officers and committees can develop a plan of action to meet the goals, can decide who will be responsible for each action step, and when each action step will be completed. Convention materials posted include: 1) the PowerPoint presentation and 2) the script used during the Period of Instruction for review in preparation of the chapter wellness meeting. 3) The workshop handout, 4) a blank CHAT worksheet, 5) a blank Chapter Officer Statistics Survey, 6) a blank Chapter Age Grid Survey for use if materials from Convention have been misplaced. An outline for use in preparing the chapter wellness meeting, Delegate Directions for Chapter Health Meeting, and a handout list for chapter officers, committees and members, and Resources to Help Reach Chapter Goals, are also posted. Please contact Nancy Williams, nancywms65@gmail.com, with questions. Utah P.E.O. Calendar Check out the Utah P.E.O. Google calendar [click here]. View it in Week, Month or Agenda style.
