I will almst always yu back t at least let yu knw that I received yur . COURSE OVERVIEW This curse is intended t expse the student t biblical r Christian-based cunseling. This curse is just an intrductin and in n way is intended t cmpletely prepare the student fr a career in cunseling r any type f licensure. The tpics cvered are intended t help the student better understand hw the human mind wrks and interacts with its envirnment. It will als prvide the student with basic infrmatin n varius cunseling issues, and help the student develp sme basic techniques t assist in cunseling. A great tl t quickly identify scriptures related t cunseling tpics. ADDITIONAL READINGS Additinal readings will cme primarily frm church literature. The apprpriate web links will be designated n the curse web site, and may als include ther secular surces. Additinal readings will als cme frm the fllwing surces: NOTE: Required texts and ther utside readings have been chsen because f their verall value and relatin t the curse. Students shuld keep in mind that these surces are secular and althugh very gd in many ways, nt all the ideas shared by the authrs are biblically accurate r even acceptable in Gd s Church. The instructr will attempt t pint ut majr errrs, but ultimately the student must sift thrugh the material gleaning the wise and gdly elements, and dismissing the inapprpriate. COURSE DESCRIPTION 1

2 This curse fcuses n the philsphy and techniques f biblically-based cunseling including interpersnal, premarital, marital, family cunseling, addictin cunseling, and biblical cnflict reslutin. Tpics include the nature and principles f biblically-based cunseling, techniques and theries f cunseling; patterns f prblem slving, the cunselr and cunselee relatinship; the applicability f Scripture; and biblical cnflict reslutin. Upn cmpletin a student shuld be able t understand and discuss multiple issues applicable t cunseling and demnstrate the basic techniques f biblically-based cunseling. Technlgy Access: This curse requires web access and the student als has t have an established accunt. The fllwing free ware may be useful in this curse. Adbe Acrbat Reader is necessary t view dcuments that are PDF files. It may be dwnladed fr free at which may then be installed and used t access PDF dcuments n the curse website. COURSE OBJECTIVES As a result f participating in THL 350, students will be able t: 1. Understand and define the differences between psychlgy, cunseling, Christian cunseling, and cnflict reslutin. 2. Be able t identify the differences between the bilgy, psychlgy, scilgy, and thelgy f human behavir. 3. Develp a basic understanding f hw t assess valid research in psychlgy, cunseling, and Christian cunseling. 4. Identify and articulate the strengths and weaknesses f mdern psychlgy and cunseling. 5. Demnstrate an understanding f biblical cunseling principles and techniques. 6. Develp a basic understanding f a variety f Christian cunseling tpics. COURSE LECTURES Curse lectures will take the frmat f bth vide and audi. PwerPint slides will accmpany lectures and vides will als peridically be available fr dwnlad with sme lectures. See the curse website fr details. These slides will appear in PDF frmat. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Submit assignments n r befre the date due. N late r make-up assignments will be allwed accept fr extreme circumstances (permissin f instructr is necessary). 2. Students will be respnsible fr the chapter readings that crrespnd with the class lecture. Be sure t read the chapter prir t lgging in and cmpleting the weekly assignment. Readings will crrespnd with in-class assignments and will help yu be better infrmed. Cmpleting the readings in advance will make the assignments make mre sense t yu! 3. Icebreaker/Bigraphy Frum Pst: All students are required t pst a brief bigraphy t the frum by Friday f the first week f class. Alng with the bigraphy that addresses the fllwing questins. Pst a brief bigraphy/backgrund n yurself. Als, please send me an e-cpy f a recent PHOTO f yurself, fr yur fellw classmates' (as well as my) benefit (if yu d nt already have a prfile pht in Ppuli). Yu shuld send this pht via t my address at swinnail@livinguniv.cm. Make sure t put THL 350 PHOTO in the subject line. In yur frum pst, briefly answer the fllwing questins: (please limit yur cmments t 200 wrds). The assignment is wrth 20 pints. a. Yur Name and the Church area that yu attend. b. Where yu intend t attend the Feast f Tabernacles this year (if yu are able t attend). 4. Weekly Cmments and Class Participatin: Students are expected t participate in class 2

3 discussins by psting weekly cmments and questins they might have n the Discussin Frum (see the link n the curse web site). Each week there will be ne r tw questins psted n the web page that related t that week s lectures and readings. If there are n unique discussin questins psted fr that particular week, yu shuld chse frm ne f the fllwing questins t write n and relate the questin t ne f the tpics cvered in the readings fr the week. Als, make sure that yur cmments are mre than merely persnal pinin. Yur cmments shuld be grunded in yur chapter readings, lecture ntes, and based n scripture. These weekly discussins are very imprtant and are designed t reinfrce the weekly cntent in a unique way. S it is imprtant t participate in the discussins. a) What item frm the reading this week was mst interesting t yu? Minimal participatin requires ne psting per week. Pstings are due n r befre Friday at nn (in whatever time zne yu are in). Class participatin pints will be assigned in accrdance with yur level participatin, and will be a cmbinatin f student and instructr input. YOU will use the grading rubric belw t determine yur class participatin grade at the end f the semester. Scale Criteria 5 Vlunteers t share quality ideas/thughts/findings frm readings and experiences with peers frequently. In additin, presents questins t peers and instructr regarding ideas presented. Student is always prepared fr class, having cmpleted readings and assignments ahead f time. Cmments are well grunded in readings, lecture ntes, and scripture (when applicable). Usually psts replies t cmments made by classmates. 4 Vlunteers t share quality ideas/thughts/findings frm readings and experiences with peers frequently, but cmments may nt be slidly based upn readings, lecture ntes, and scripture (when applicable). Usually prepared fr class, having cmpleted readings and assignments ahead f time. Psts replies t classmate cmments sme f the time. 3 Vlunteers t share quality ideas/thughts/findings frm readings and experiences with peers less frequently than required. Generally prepared fr class, having usually cmpleted readings and assignments ahead f time. Cmments are ften based n pinin and rarely n readings, lecture ntes, and scripture (when applicable). Infrequently psts replies t classmate cmments. 2 Shares ideas/thughts/findings frm readings and experiences as directed, but little effrt is put int insuring that they are f quality, and usually cmments are much mre pinin than based n fact and readings, lecture ntes and scripture (when applicable). NOTE TIME ZONE ISSUES: Please nte that due dates and times relate specifically t the times zne yu reside in. Yu may see an 11:59pm due time n the specific assignment, but this is designed t allw all students, frm the western-mst time znes t submit assignments n time. If the assignment states that yur deadline is nn r 5pm, this is specific t whatever time zne yu reside in. The time zne delineatin is als a matter f fairness t all students. 5. Mid-term exam will be given during the middle week f the semester. The exam will be 3

4 cmprehensive and review all the material cvered t that pint in the semester. The exam will be cmprised f multiple chice, shrt answer, and essay questins. It will be pen bk and pen nte bk. Students are NOT hwever permitted t discuss exam questins and issues while taking the exam. IMPORTANT: It is highly recmmended that the student prepare fr this exam by studying ahead f time. Althugh the exam will nt be timed, preparing fr the exam will help the student expedite the exam taking prcess and greatly shrten its duratin. Mid-term exam is wrth 100 pints. 6. TWO Brief Tpical Papers (tw at 50 pints each): Yu will be expected t d tw shrt research papers n cunseling related t a specific need area. Using yur Christian Cunseling text by Cllins, pssibility yur Intr t Psychlgy and Cunseling text by Meier et al., and ther surces, identify tw different areas f cunseling that yu discvered thrugh yur ministerial interview, are pressing issues fr Gd s peple. Try t avid the areas cvered in lecture fr this curse, and rather, fcus n tw ther areas. This paper need nly be 3-5 pages in length and shuld cver the fllwing areas: a. Clearly identify the cunseling r prblem area t be examined. b. Give sme backgrund n the issue/area, including predispsing factrs r causes, factrs that cntribute t r wrsen the situatin, and frequency f the situatin in the general ppulatin. c. Identify cunseling strategies frequently used t successfully deal with this issue. Specifically identify Christian cunseling methds. d. Identify biblical principles and specific scriptures that directly address the issue. Hw wuld Gd lk at and deal with this issue? e. Identify ther resurces that may be available t help supprt a persn facing this issue. f. Summarize what yu have learned abut this issue and what stands ut in yur mind. g. Be sure t use a reference list and prperly cite surces within yur paper. 7. Three additinal Activities: (50 pints each) Yu are free t cmplete these Activities and turn them in at any time prir t and up t the date due. These Activities are designed t get yu t think further n particular tpics and issues related t class. Activities shuld be typed and duble spaced. All shuld be 2-3 pages in length. Activities will be due n r befre their due date, by 12 nn in yur time zne n the fllwing dates: A. Ministerial Cunseling Interview: Fr this assignment, make an appintment t interview yur pastr. If yu are the pastr, cntact yur reginal pastr r anther lng-time minister. Yu will be interviewing this persn t find ut essentially what lessns he has learned in cunseling peple ver the years. Be sure t let him knw ahead f time what yu want t talk t him abut. Yu are encuraged t speak t this minister either in persn, n the phne, r via smething like Skype. Try t avid just ing questins and asking fr a respnse this methd is bth impersnal and mre time cnsuming fr the minister yu are asking feedback frm. Be sure use the fllwing questins in yur interview. Yu may add mre if yu like. In yur write up f this assignment, be sure t clearly articulate the questins and answers, as well as address the additinal questins at the end regarding yur experience. Hw lng has this persn served in the ministry? What training (if any), did this persn receive in cunseling prir t cming int the ministry? Hw has this minister increased his skill in cunseling? What cunseling issues des he see mst frequently? In his experience, what changes has he seen in cunseling issues? Put anther way, are there issues tday that are any different frm issues, say, 10 r 20 years ag? If s, why? What majr lessns has this man learned ver his years f cunseling Gd s peple? What advice des this persn have related t Christian cunseling? (Fr the interviewer): As yu write up this assignment, what are the majr things/lessns yu learned frm this interview? Did anything yu heard make yu think differently abut Christian cunseling? B. Listening Activity: Listening is a key skill fr any scially functinal persn, and especially a 4

5 persn prviding wise and gdly cunsel. Yu cannt prvide pignant feedback that is n tpic, unless yu learn t listen critically, carefully, and cmpletely. Fr this activity, identify an imprtant persn in yur life that yu interact with regularly. Set aside a tw week perid in which yu will practice implementing yur new fund listening skills in yur relatinship with this persn. Cnsciusly wrk t apply these skills and see what yu learn. Review the skills at the website: Print this page and review abut every-ther-day. At the end f tw weeks, write up yur experience accrding t the fllwing questins. Yur write up shuld be 2-3 pages in length. What is yur relatinship t the persn yu practiced yur listening skills n? Hw lng have yu knwn this persn. Prir t the activity, n a scale f 1-5 with ne being wrst and five being best, hw wuld yu rank yur listening skills when yu interacted with this persn? Explain, alng with areas f weakness yu saw in yur listening skills with this persn. During this activity perid (abut tw weeks), are there any aspects f listening that yu specifically hned in n? At the end f the activity perid, hw wuld yu rank yur listening skills with this persn ( n the same scale f 1-5)? Why? Did yur relatinship with this persn change any during this time perid, and while yu fcused n listening better? What are yur verall thughts abut this activity, and mre imprtantly, the pwer f actively paying attentin t hw yu listen? C. Persnal philsphy n Christian cunseling. Yu are t write up a persnal philsphy abut biblical r Christian cunseling. This dcument shuld be abut 3-4 pages, duble spaced. It shuld give a brief definitin (in yur wn wrds), f what biblical cunseling is, related t cunseling in general (r in the wrld ). In this philsphy, yu shuld share wh yu believe shuld be invlved in this practice, what it entails, and what makes biblical cunseling unique. Ultimately, yu shuld share what yu believe t be Gd s expectatins regarding cunseling smething quite different frm what the wrld expects.
