1 1 Grades 6-8 Lessn 1 CHECKING ACCOUNTS AND ATM TRANSACTIONS Tpic t Teach: This lessn is intended fr middle schl students in sixth thrugh eighth grades during a frty minute time perid. The lessn teaches students hw t write checks and recrd transactins in a check bk register. ATM cards, debit and credit cards are intrduced. Bank fees and regulatins are als presented. Lessn Objectives: Students will be able t: - Describe the rules and regulatins f a checking accunt - List the parts f a check - Write practice checks - Cmplete entries in a check register and describe its imprtance - Describe the purpse f ATM cards and transactins - Distinguish between debit and credit cards Materials: - ATM/Debit card and a Credit card - samples - Resurce Files: Blank Check (1 per student); DAMPER Check (1 per student); Sample Check Register (1 per student), Blank Check Register (1 per student) *Materials nt attached t this file may be fund in a separate resurce file. Setting the Stage: Backgrund Builder #1 (2-5 mins): Ask students the fllwing questins: 1. Hw d yu pay t register t participate in sprts r ther clubs? 2. Hw wuld yur parents pay fr yur schl pictures? 3. Each mnth, yur parents receive bills fr things like the electric, telephne, car, etc., hw d they pay these bills? (Prmpt that parents use checks r nline banking because it is safer than mailing cash; a check serves as a receipt fr payment.) Metr Bank: Metr Mney Sense Grade 6 8/Lessn 1

2 2 Review the Lessn Objective: Tell the students what they will be able t d upn cnclusin f the lessn. EXAMPLE: At the end f the lessn, yu will be able t write a check and keep track f yur checking accunt activity (depsits and debits) in a checking accunt. Yu will als be able t discuss ATM, credit, and debit cards listing the advantages and disadvantages f each. The Lessn Prcedure (15-25 mins): Ask/Discuss the fllwing questins: - Ask students if they are aware f hw their parents pay fr things like fd, the electric bill, things at the mall r at the grcery stre. Prmpt that peple ften use a check t pay fr things because it gives permissin t nly ne cmpany r ne persn t receive a specific amunt f mney. And, when making a payment by mail, using a check is a very safe way t send mney. - Distribute the DAMPER Wrksheet check Review the six parts f a check D = Date the date the check is issued A = Amunt the numerical amunt f mney t be paid t the Payee M = Maker the name f the persn respnsible fr paying the amunt shwn P = Payee the persn r cmpany receiving the mney as payment E = Endrsement the signature f the persn r cmpany accepting payment R = Ruting a unique number that identifies the bank t which check belngs Checks can cme in many styles and clrs and they are persnalized with the accunt hlder s name and address. Explain that checks must be filled ut crrectly r the bank will nt payut the mney. Randmly quiz the students rally abut DAMPER meanings. Als explain that checks cannt be written fr mre mney than the persn actually has in their accunt. If yu d, the bank will return the check withut paying it AND they will charge yu an extra fee. 3 3 - Distribute the Blank Check wrksheet t everyne in the class Review DAMPER based n this sample Be sure t nte the imprtance f writing numerical and alphabetical amunts n the check Shw the technique f filling in any extra space n the Payee line r Amunt line with a dtted line that prevents anyne frm adding additinal infrmatin. Fr example, writing the wrd twenty wuld allw smene t add thusand but writing twenty and 00/ des nt. Ask everyne t fill in their check as fllws: Check Number (indicate that this is preprinted by the bank n the check) Tday s date Payee = United Electric and Gas Amunt = Tw hundred and fifty dllars 00/100 (Numeric: $250.00) Circulate arund the rm and assist students as necessary in rder t cmplete the blank check wrksheet. - Discuss hw things can becme disrganized if yu dn t keep track f yur mney and the checks yu write. When yu pen a checking accunt, yu receive a bk f checks and a check register. Ask students if they knw what a check register is and hw it is used. Prmpt that a register is used t keep track f ALL transactins cmpleted n the bank accunt: checks, ATM withdrawals, Debit card purchases, depsits, etc.) Explain that gd arithmetic is very imprtant and that yu must cnstantly be updating yur register s that yu knw hw much mney is available in yur accunt. Explain that depsits mean that yu add mney t an accunt Explain that debit means that yu withdraw/subtract mney frm an accunt Explain that it is imprtant t recrd check numbers in yur register s yu can keep track f yur checks Ask what happens if yu dn t recrd a transactin in the register - Distribute blank check registers wrksheet. Prceed t discuss the aspects f an entry: date, check number, payee r transactin type, amunt f the transactin, and the new balance.. Ask students t enter a starting accunt balance f $ int the register. Ask students t enter the infrmatin frm the check they just cmpleted int their check bk register and calculate their new accunt balance. Ask the students t cmplete anther check Payee: Sneaker Wrld Amunt: $87.00 Date: Yesterday s date Ask the students t add this transactin t the register and calculate their new accunt balance. 4 4 - Ask students t describe ther ways t pay fr items like grceries, nline purchases, r special items at the mall. Prmpt fr ATM (cash); ATM/Debit; and Credit Cards. - Review the fllwing ATM card cncepts and discuss with the students: There are alternative ways t bank: ATM cards, Debit cards, and Credit cards ATM = Autmated Teller Machine If a Teller is the title wh usually handles yur business at a bank, like depsits and withdrawals, what is an Autmated Teller Machine? A machine that acts like a Teller 24 hurs a day! By using an ATM card, yu can depsit and withdraw mney/cash, print yur bank statements, r even buy stamps at sme ATMs! ATMs require a secret passwrd r PIN (Persnal Identificatin Number) t access an accunt with yur ATM card. This is yur secret passwrd and yu shuld never share it with anyne. Als, never lend yur ATM card t smene. If yu ever lse yur ATM card r it gets stlen, cntact yur bank immediately s that they can d everything pssible t prtect yur mney. ATM transactins are nt always free. Many banks charge a fee if yu use an ATM ther than yur bank s ATM. Nw ask the students t enter a $20 ATM withdrawal int their check bk register. And, have them add a $1.50 fee int their check bk register fr using a different bank s ATM. - Review the fllwing Debit card cncepts and discuss with the students: Anther way peple pay fr purchases that is the same as paying with cash is using a Debit card. A debit card is issued by yur bank and is directly tied t yur bank accunt, s every time yu use it, the amunt spent is autmatically deducted r subtracted frm yur bank accunt. Yu can nly use a debit card t spend up t the amunt f mney yu have in yur accunt. Ask students t add a debit card purchase f $13.00 fr McDnald s t their check bk register. - Review the fllwing Credit card cncepts and discuss with the students: Credit is when the bank agrees t buy a prduct fr yu and trusts that yu will pay them back ver time. Discuss that there are different types f credit, primarily a credit card r a lan. Cmpare that credit cards are typically used fr smaller purchases and lans are used fr larger items such as a car, hme, r cllege. Metr Bank: Metr Mney Sense Grade 6 8/Lessn 1

5 5 In rder t get credit yu have t apply fr it. A bank will nly give yu credit if yu can prve that yu are a persn wh is respnsible with mney. Yu currently are emplyed, r have a surce f incme. Yu have a driver s license. Yu have paid ff past purchases in a timely manner. Future ptential incme. Cllateral what can be sld t pay back the lan in an emergency. A bank will nly give yu a limited amunt f mney n credit. Yu may have t pay a bank a fee t have a credit card r lan, this is called interest. Interest is a fee yu pay the bank fr lending yu the mney n credit. - Ask student t add anther check transactin in the amunt f $45.00 int their check bk register fr a check t their schl fr their yearbk. They shuld als calculate their new accunt balance. At this time, yu may want t ask students t exchange their check bk registers and have them check fr accuracy f additin and subtractin, as well as fr prper entry prcedure. - Students shuld have a balance f $83.50 in their checking accunts. Students may ask what happens if they verdraw their accunts. It is imprtant t remind them that it is their respnsibility t make sure this desn t happen. Hwever, mst banks d ffer an verdraft feature that cnnects yur savings accunt t yur checking accunt. In the event yur checking accunt desn t have enugh funds t cver a transactin, the bank will autmatically take the mney frm yur savings accunt t pay fr the transactin. Clsing the Lessn (5 mins): Thank the students fr their participatin. Review with the students why peple use checks t pay bills (e.g. safety, cnvenience, accuracy) and the imprtance f keeping accurate recrds in the check register. Review the key difference between ATM (get cash), Debit (use like cash), and Credit (when yu need a shrt term lan f cash) transactins. Remind students that having a checking accunt, ATM card and credit r debit cards is a big respnsibility. If there is time, use ne f the recmmended clsing activities (Ways t End and Review Lessn).
