Introduction The 2014 Queensland Small Business Week has once again shown that Queensland offers small business great opportunity. Held over six days commencing on Monday 1 September and concluding with Buy locally Saturday on 6 September the week delivered an exciting and diverse range of events and activities focused on educating and connecting small business, and inspiring them to have a big future. The week is a Queensland Government initiative that is managed by the Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games (DTESB). To deliver this statewide outcome, DTESB consulted and collaborated with government agencies, business and industry groups, education providers and businesses. As a key action under the government s Queensland small business strategy and action plan , Queensland Small Business Week has continued to support the government s efforts to stimulate the growth of small businesses in the state, which in turn generates employment and economic progress. The department would like to thank the event management group; our sponsors, event hosts, speakers and facilitators; media partners; and everyone who attended an activity or event for making the week an outstanding success. Dr Richard Eden Director-General, Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games 2014 Queensland Small Business Week Report 3

The importance of small business to Queensland Small business is the foundation of the Queensland economy. They are the heart of our regional communities, and drive employment and economic progress throughout the state. Queensland s small businesses (those employing less than 20 people) are at the core of every industry sector. They are in every community and in every region. They represent over 97% of businesses statewide and employ approximately 50% of all private sector workers. Small businesses deliver a diverse range of goods and services across all industry sectors. They complement the economic activity of large organisations and are a key part of the supply chains of larger projects. Small businesses power regional development and are the gateway through which many people enter the economy many are the larger businesses of tomorrow. In Queensland, small businesses have a bright future 23.3% of small businesses report that they have increased their productivity since Additionally, 83.5% of those that attended the 2014 Queensland Small Business Week reported that they are expecting to increase their revenue in the next 12 months, and 36.8% are expecting to increase their revenue substantially (see Figure 1). 8 A week of celebration Key objectives Promote the importance of small business to the community and the Queensland economy Raise awareness of Queensland Government support for small business Encourage small businesses to engage with the government s business services Facilitate and support knowledge uptake, networking and education Engage with small business on priority issues to inform future policy direction 6

A strategic approach Queensland Small Business Week is a key action under the Queensland small business strategy and action plan The objective of the week is to promote the importance of small business to the economy, and provide business intenders, owners and managers with the opportunity to hear new ideas, connect with other businesses and access information to help them grow and become more resilient. The week also offers the Queensland Government an opportunity to engage with small businesses, education providers, industry groups and other government organisations. Through this engagement, the government can better understand the priority issues and challenges that impact business establishment and growth, and from this information, develop the future small business policy agenda. Tigers in Queensland Tigers may be rare in Australia, but there are a growing number in Queensland small business tigers that is. What s more, quite a few took part in the 2014 Queensland Small Business Week! Small business tigers are small businesses that expect to grow their revenues substantially in the next 12 months. Queensland has the largest proportion of small business tigers compared to all other states and territories (11% vs 8%). Feedback from attendees across all events during the week showed that more than 36% could be considered small business tigers. 2 2 Source: DBM Consultants, Australian small businesses: fact and figures, Melbourne, Queensland Small Business Week Report 7

My advice to other young entrepreneurs is to pursue their dreams, be resourceful, network and keep your risk as low as possible. Queensland Small Business Week was a great platform for networking and encouraging other like-minded people to be each other s support network. This becomes fundamentally important when you launch your business. Rachell Angeles Buckley, 25, used the information she gained from one of the main 2013 events to help her establish her specialist linen hire company, Emrajo Linen, in February this year Queensland Small Business Week Report 9

A collaborative approach Highlights Stakeholder engagement with 837 business and industry groups Whole-of-government approach to marketing and engagement Secured 5 sponsors for the week Collaborated with media organisations to provide exclusive coverage of the week and Buy locally Saturday 10

Partners and collaborators The week was delivered in partnership and collaboration with a range of groups and organisations, including industry bodies, local chambers of commerce, media organisations, business enterprise centres, regional development organisations, local government organisations, universities and TAFEs. Queensland Government agencies provided support by promoting the week to their networks and stakeholders. Some of these agencies also ran events independently and in partnership with local chambers of commerce and government organisations. The Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning s regional office network ensured the week was promoted widely through each region, and encouraged their local small businesses to participate in events and activities. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) partnered with DTESB to deliver the week.
