Curses are directly applicable t medical educatin (n=5) Faculty are utstanding (n=7) and accessible Meet phenmenal medical educatrs and have many pprtunities t netwrk with individuals in all health disciplines (n=5) Classmates are frm all ver the wrld (n=3) Flexible curse schedule (n=5) Well knwn prgram with an excellent reputatin It is adult learning at its best - a framewrk is prvided but what drives the learning is the challenges yu experience at yur wn institutin Mre attentin t the needs f individual students On-line curses are "practical" but the experience was persnally much richer while attending the classes. Sme classes better taught than thers, mst very gd, but a few culd be restructured r drpped frm "required" classes. Thesis was very time-cnsuming and the mentrship culd have been better. My advisr made revisin after revisin, abut 8 times. It was a nightmare. Mre structure t thesis study Having educatrs and ther health prfessinals besides MD's in prgram prvides a valuable balance. Interacting with students frm different areas in adult educatin gave me a brad perspective n the applicatin f the knwledge and skills and taught me unique ways f lking at the curse cntent It wuld be nice t have ne curse that tied the masters studies directly t healthcare applicatins. Strngly recmmend anyne ding this start yur thesis r prject very early during yur cursewrk and get the damn thing dne! D a hybrid. Learning n line has its set f rewards but the classrm vibe and excitement is nt t be missed. The cre curses shuld be taught in rder - they actually build n ne anther. (501-Intr t Issues in HPE, 503-Curriculum and Evaluatin, 502- Instructin and 504-Assessment and Leadership and Organizatin). I might als cnsider the idea f changing 502/3 t be Curriculum/Instructin and Assessment/Evaluatin. I can see advantages t bth ways. It's an excellent prgram but quite rigrus. The curse wrk and thesis can be quite time cnsuming. On campus is easier and quite dable. I fund it easier t get wrk dne while taking time ff frm practice than when taking classes n line and mixing it with wrk and family time. Best t cme in with a thesis in mind and make every paper/prject alng the way the backgrund fr the thesis if at all pssible. G fr it. Clear it with yur spuse/partner - it takes time get funding/prtected time frm yur institutin Make sure yu have enugh prtected time Overall it was excellent, but chse yur thesis advisr with cautin. Ask ther students, grads, etc. wh t select. Wrth every lst vacatin day used t cmplete it n site. Seek advisement n Thesis early in prgram. It will likely take lnger then the anticipated time t cmplete especially if yu try t maintain a nrmal clinical practice G fr it. Be practive with thesis cmmittee and set deadlines It was a very gd and useful prgram. Superb resurces thrughut the university. It is imprtant t understand the amunt f wrk required s that yu can effectively manage yur time. It wuld be helpful t have the supprt f yur department in pursuing these activities. 7 Master f Arts in Liberal and Integrative Studies University f Illinis at Springfield Fcus n Surgical Educatin thrugh Suthern Illinis University Department f Surgery This degree prgram is nt specific t medical educatin; rather, the student creates a curse f study t be apprved and mentred by multiple faculty. The key issue was establishing a link with medical educatrs utside f UIS. My degree was essentially mentred thrugh Reed Williams fr cntent and directin, while my degree supervisr at UIS primarily helped with administrative issues. Hwever, yu must g ut f yur way t tailr the prgram t what yu want and t specifically find medical resurces. Make sure that yu are prepared fr the time cmmitment because the curses are paced ver 13- week semesters requiring frequent assignments and interactin via asynchrnus and sme synchrnus cmmunicatin frmats. One needs t be highly mtivated and self-directed t d well in a fully nline prgram. I wuld talk with the advisrs and have an idea f interests fr research. Need t discuss with chair f the educatin department what yur shrt and lng term gals are and then tailr the prgram t yur needs. Flexibility f an n-line nly frmat Excellent frmat and times are usually cnvenient. Wuld recmmend it, must be able t devte the time, self discipline is required!
