In cooperation with Blue Ridge Community College many of our classes qualify for third party credit and will be added to a student s transcript as pass/fail credit. 2 ON-LINE SEWING/CONSTRUCTION Non sewers, beginners, intermediate, and advanced sewers, are welcome, to learn how to sew from the Master Tailor-Designer Eric W. Stiles, Sr., former top Supervisor and Head Tailor-Fitter for Giorgio Armani, Polo Ralph Lauren and others. Mr. Stiles has more than 35 years of professional experience. He will teach you how to correctly use a thimble and needle and you will begin your first of 3 hand stitches: overcast, baste and the halfback stitches. No sewing experience is required. Materials list will be provided on the first day of class. (Supplies are not included in the price of the course). You will need a sewing machine at home. DISCOVER WV OUTDOORS WEST VIRGINIA IS HOME TO SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTI- FUL SCENERY AND UNIQUE ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVI- TIES IN THE UNITED STATES In this class, you will explore the many ways you can enjoy West Virginia Outdoors. Whether you have lived in WV your whole life or are a new resident to the state, the information shared in this class will identify outstanding destinations and activities of interest to you. We will explore four websites that will acquaint you with opportunities to discover and plan many exciting activities of interest to you. There is something for everyone. From full service resorts, secluded cabins, campgrounds, and wilderness camping exciting recreational activities; you can have all this and more. During the class participants are welcome to share information about interesting places to go while traveling the Mountain State. WEST VIRGINIA STATE PARKS TOUR West Virginia State Parks Tour (WVSPT) provides a unique opportunity to visit and enjoy state parks and forests and other places of interest in the state of West Virginia. It offers a series of tours of West Virginia State Parks and other areas of interest offered by Berkeley County Schools Adult and Community Education Program. Over the years participants in previous day trips to state parks had expressed an interest in multiple day tours of West Virginia State Parks. The first tour was held on May 10-11, State parks visited included Prickett s Fort, Tygart Lake, Blennerhassett Island, and Cooper s Rock State Forest with lodging at Tygart Lake Lodge. A program highlight was a guided tour of the interior of Tygart Lake Dam. We plan it, you come along and enjoy it. This fall we are planning another outstanding WVSPT that is not to be missed. Possible stops on this multiple day tour are: Cass Scenic Railroad, Beartown, Pearl Buck Museum, National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Nancy Hanks Museum, Droop Mountain, Green Brier State Forest. Travel will be by comfortable motor coach with lodging at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. Price range is $250-$350. Price is per person and includes transportation, program costs, some meals and lodging. Tentative tour date is October 18-20, To learn more about the tour a class will be held to go over trip details and itinerary. The tuition for this class will go toward the cost of the tour. 3 INTRODUCTION OF BUSINESS This class is designed to introduce business theories and ideas to participants. It will help answer the question: What is it that you are looking for in creating your business? The instructor will provide productive directions on how to get started and ask for class participation on their individual ideas. This course is designed to help increase businesses in West Virginia and create employment. Entrepreneurship greatly desired. Students in the course will actually work together as a group to create, establish and promote an actual business (less the legalities). Students will learn how to choose a location and how to market their business. The instructor will include constructive directions on developing your business plan. Bring your questions to this two hour interactive discussion and learn how energy healing can decrease pain, shorten length of hospital stays and rehab, aid in physical healing and disease and assist in healing in trauma and wartime injury. KELLOGG TUITION: $55 BASKET CRAFTING WITH SUSAN MATSON Please bring to all BASKET classes: dishpan, towel, sharp scissors, pencil, cloth, pins, awl, needle nose pliers, and spray bottle. Realizing that this is a time to carefully consider expenditures, this term s baskets have been selected for their utility, gift-giving possibilities, and practicality. With a wide range of material fees, we hope you will join us for a class (or classes!) offering a project which will enhance your or another s life. STAINED GLASS BASKET Weave a basket that works hard and looks good. This is function with a bit of pizzazz! Colored overlays form a background on top of which you will create a band of contrasting diamonds. The design is dramatic but not difficult. Choose from two styles and three sizes--a large tote measuring 14 l x 9 w x 11 h at the rim, a small tote measuring 10 l x 5 w x 71/2 h at the rim, or a basic square measuring 8 h x 6 h. All skill levels welcome. When registering, please tell what style (and size) of basket you would like to make. Looking forward to having you with us! MATSON TUITION: $35 CONFETTI BREAD BASKET OR PARTY PLATTER BASKET These two baskets use the same weaving techniques, so choose the one that best suits your needs! All skill levels are welcome. When registering you must tell which basket you would like to make. Hope to see you! The Confetti Bread Basket is begun on a slotted wooden base, has space-dyed stakes and employs a continuous twill weave--with striking, eye-catching results. Measuring approximately 9 l x 6 w x 3 h at the rim, this basket will add a festive touch to any meal. Or put it to use as remote round-up in your family living area, or as a place to collect the miscellany on your desk. Give it a wow! finish by choosing to add hand-wrought iron handles (extra fee). The Party Platter is a lovely, shallow basket that will enhance the presentation of any platter. Also begun on a slotted wooden base, you will choose whether to use natural or dyed weavers...or a combination of both. You can also choose to add the special touch of a crisscross design in cane to the basket s sides, and if you really want your creation to be breathtakingly beautiful, add a pair of elegant, hand-carved, side handles (extra fee). CLASS CODE 607 NOV. 4 & 18 MON. 6:30-9:30 PM 2 CLASSES S. MATSON TUITION: $35 CHRISTMAS FLATS Put a bit of handmade with love into your Christmas--or some one else s! You ll be weaving either a set of 6 2 x 2 ornaments showing stylized trees and stars (hang them on the tree or use as package tie-ons or a 5 1/2 square trivet with the same stylized designs. Splint and rush replacement of chair seats and backs will be taught. Bring rubber bands, a bucket, shears and a chair to class. Caning pegs can be purchased at class for $2.50 per dozen (expect to purchase 2-3 dozen). Depending on the size of the chair, material costs will average $12-$15. BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE CROCHET Beginners - Learn basic crochet stitches and how to read a basic pattern. There will be a $10 supply fee to be paid to the instructor at the first class which covers the cost of yarn (both cotton and acrylic), a crochet hook, a tote bag, stitch samples, and a variety of patterns. Intermediates - Refresh skills; receive assistance with patterns, stitches, or techniques. Feel free to bring a project from home. Please call prior to class for knit or crochet patterns for a hat and/or purse as well as yarn and hook/needle requirements. Register early and receive your patterns so you can have more than one project made by the wash day which is the last week of class. CLASS CODE 614 NOVEMBER 7 THURSDAY 6:00-8:00 PM 3 WEEKS J. SLUSHER TUITION: $27 COMMUNITY SERVICE KNITTING/CROCHET CLASS This class will enable you to make and donate assorted knit or crocheted items to local organizations. Some guidance will be provided by a facilitator. A variety of patterns and project ideas will be available. Please bring your own knitting needles/crochet hooks and yarn to class. The only cost to you is your time, talents and whatever yarn you can provide. There may also be some donated yarn available at class. Please call with any questions.
