1 Summer 2013 Music and Arts Program For students entering 4 th -12 th Grade July1st July 26th (School closing: Thursday, July 4) Location: Paramus High School Starting time: 9:00 am (Grades 4-8), 10:00 (Gr. 9-12) Students must be entering these grade levels in September Our Summer Music tradition continues this year. Join our professional and dedicated music faculty for four weeks of music making and learning at Paramus High School. This program offers students the opportunity to participate in small and large group lessons, and a variety of ensembles, which include band, glee, and orchestra. On July 25th, families and friends are invited to attend the final concert, which will be a culmination of the camp experience. Please read through the course selection guide below. See you in July! Instrumental Music 90 minute program: Group lesson and Ensemble Students may register for group lessons on the following instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass, Trumpet, French horn, Trombone, Tuba, Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone, and Percussion. Students will receive a 45-minute group lesson plus a 45-minute ensemble (band or orchestra) rehearsal every day! 1. Select a lesson group: Level I (Beginners) Lessons are for students with no prior experience on their selected instrument. Select a Level I lesson for your child if he/she is a beginner on the instrument. Level II Lessons are for students with one year of experience on their instrument, i.e. 5 th graders who started playing last September or last summer, or 6 th graders who started playing in 6 th grade. Level III Lessons are for students who have been playing for at least two - three years 2. Select one Ensemble: Beginning Band and Beginning Orchestra are for students with no prior experience on their instrument. Woodwind/Brass/Percussion students should select Band. String students should select Orchestra. (Level I) Intermediate Band and Intermediate Orchestra are for all students with at least one year of experience on their instruments. Woodwind/Brass/Percussion students should select Band. String students should select Orchestra. (Level II) Advanced School Band and Advanced School Orchestra are for all students with at least two years of experience on their instruments. Woodwind/Brass/Percussion students should select Band. String students should select Orchestra. (Level III) Intensive Small Ensemble Experience for musicians going into grades 9-12 This is for students who have been playing for at least 4 years and would like to receive 2 one hour private lessons and be placed in a small ensemble ranging from duet to octets in your particular voicing. Example: String Trio, Quartet, Flute Choir, Wind Quintet, Sax quartet, jazz combo etc. Look for our Advanced Musician Intensive Study Form or call ext 3051

2 Creative s 45 minutes (choose one or more) Campers! Choose one of the fun electives below and experience different forms of art such as Dance, woodworking, computers in art, digital photography, black and white photography, video production, painting, sculpture, and so much more. Your artwork will be displayed at the Festival of the Arts at the completion of camp. You may choose electives with or without music classes. W oodwor king: 9:45-10:30, 10:30-11:15, 11:15-12:00 () Introduction to Woodworking for 7th and 8th graders provides opportunities for students to develop their interests and talents in the area of woodworking. Students will have the opportunity to enjoy a hands-on experience creating fun projects from wood. The course presents basic knowledge of woodworking processes along with concepts related to both hand tools and machine work. Program will focus on proper wood shop safety and have an emphasis on individualized instruction. Comprehension and application of basic design techniques, general assembly and finishing techniques are stressed. Each year is different and projects change. You may take this again if you already have! Studio Art 9:00-9:45 (Gr. 6-8), 9:45-10:30 (Gr. 5-6) 10:30-11:15 (Gr. 4-5), 11:15-12:00 (Gr. 4-6) Drawing, painting, sculpture, 3D art! All of these and so much more are experienced in this art class. You will create a vast portfolio of artistic creations developed in a studio environment that will be showcased at the Festival of the Arts in July. Digital Photography 9:00-9:45 () Experience the world through the lens of a digital camera. Learn the techniques of taking a photograph and how to edit using Adobe Photoshop. In addition, you will learn how to use special effects in Adobe Photoshop to further manipulate digital images. Your creations will be displayed in a photography show at the end of the camp experience. Intro to Digital Art Making 12:00-12:45 (Gr. 5-6) Students will be introduced to the world of Digital Art Making in this course. They will experience digital photography, video, scanning, and Adobe Photoshop in a manner to create several original art pieces. Computers in Art and Animation 10:30-11:15 (Gr. 6-8) Fuse art and technology together through this class using state of the art Mac computers. Learn to be a graphic designer by using Adobe Creative Suite to create your own artwork, movie posters, label designs, notepads and so much more. Enjoy the world of computer animations. Video Production 9:45-10:30 (Gr. 6-8) Experience the joy of filming and producing your own videos. Learn all aspects of how to make a short film from script and storyboard to filming and editing the finished product. You will learn how to use video cameras to shoot your films and then learn how to edit the video in the computer. You will make a range of productions from animations to music videos. Black and White Photography 11:15-12:00 (Gr. 5-8) you will enjoy the magic of traditional black photography in this class. Everything from making your own camera, developing your own film, to printing photos in the darkroom will be experienced. You will be engaged in photography shoots in the studio and out in nature. You will also have the opportunity to document your own life with cameras that can be borrowed overnight. You will create a series of photographs that celebrates the people and places of your life in black and white. Dance- 45 minutes Dance 9:45-10:30, 10:30-11:15 Gotta dance? Learn various styles of dance, choreography to all types of music in a dance studio taught by a professional dance teacher. A dance performance will be held in July at the conclusion of camp. Students in grades 5-8 who are interested in dance may be interested in our summer theatre program. All dance classes are held in our beautiful dance studio! Music 45 minutes Glee - Grades 4-8 Do you love the hit show Glee and enjoy today s pop music? Then Glee is for you! Learn the basics of vocal production, performance and etiquette, and stage presence in a fun atmosphere. Join in the Glee Mania! Music Technology - Grades 5-8, 9:45-10:30 Gr 5-6, 11:15-12:00 Summer music students in grades 5-6, 7-8 may choose the technology music elective where they will work in the Piano/Mac Lab on keyboard workstations. Students will learn music notation/production software programs such as Garage Band and Pro Tools. Students will compose as well as review piano keyboard skills. Let us bring your creations to our state of the art piano and recording lab. Music will be played in the summer festival.

4 Paramus Summer Music, Art, Dance, and Theatre Program Registration Form The deadline to register for this program is June 14 th, 2013 Late fee will be applied after June 14th ($25.00) I. Select Glee or Instrumental Music. Instrumental Music Glee! For 4 th -5 th Grade Glee! For 6 th -8 th Grade II. Instrumental Music class selection. Use the class schedule grid to choose classes for your child. Select ONE lesson group and ONE ensemble Lesson Group Ensemble III. Art, Dance or Music Technology Electives. Use the class schedule to choose up to three electives for your child. You may not select an elective that meets at the same time as any of your music classes. Anyone who is taking Advance Band or Orchestra may take String quartet or Jazz Band as an additional elective. You must get your music director s permission. Please attach note to registration form. 5 ADVANCED MUSICIAN INTENSIVE SUMMER MUSIC STUDY SMALL ENSEMBLE AND PRIVATE INSTRUCTION Monday, July 1st Thursday, July 18th 10:00-12:30 pm Closed Thursday, July 4 th Intensive Small Ensemble Experience for musicians going into grades 8-12 (special consideration for Middle School students who receive recommendation from their music teachers) This is for students who have been playing for at least 4 years and would like to receive (2 ) one hour private lessons and be placed in a small ensemble ranging from duet to octets in your particular voicing. Example: String Trio, Quartet, Flute Choir, Wind Quintet, Sax quartet, jazz combo etc. This group will rehearse everyday for 21/2 hours between 10:00-12:30. To determine ensembles with proper abilities and levels you must sign up early. We will also form as one group to perform popular arrangements from current pop charts. Two - One hour Private Lessons will be arranged with a master teacher. Lessons will be arranged on availability of student and their schedule. This will be arranged by phone or before the first day of this summer experience. Price: $ Director: Judy Wilkes, PHS Orchestra Director Cancellation Policy: When a teacher or student cancels a lesson, it will be made up within the two weeks. If a lesson is cancelled for any reason less than 24 hours it will not be made up. Only one cancellation will be allowed and you must notify the teacher 24 hours prior to the lesson. Please avoid cancellations and keep time set in schedule. Intensive Small Ensemble Experience with out private lessons: Just ensemble playing - $ Director: Judy Wilkes, Paramus High School Orchestra Director In addition, wind, brass and percussion students; Wind Ensemble for 9 th 12 th grade only. This larger ensemble will rehearse on weeknights starting on June 25 th lead by Mr. Mark Donellan, Director of PHS Bands. A total of six rehearsals from 7:00-9:00 pm ( July 1,3,8,10,15,17) Price: $40.00 An outdoor performance will feature all groups on Thursday evening, July 18 th, 7:00 pm. The Paramus Community Orchestra will join us for a Summer Festival behind the Paramus Public Library.
