The reborn METS Website has been up and running since January. If you haven t had a chance to peruse it take a few minutes to have a look. We welcome any feedback on what you think of it. Currently under construction and coming in the near future will be an extra component to the Website that we are currently calling the Student Portal. Any suggestions for more captivating names welcome. The Student Portal will provide online resources 'Lippy kids on the corner again, settling like crows', so goes the first line of a song by the UK band Elbow, a song about the rites of passage in teenage years. The next line has the writer looking back singing, 'don't they know, they are Golden Days', followed by the line which is the song's title 'Build a Rocket boys' It's a great song, mixing the emotion of a man looking back on his youth with the excitement of the possible futures of the characters in the song. 'Build a Rocket boys' Watching the flocks of high school students attending a recent careers convention brought the song to mind. Moving from one career 'perch' and assessment tasks for those who would prefer to access material via this means rather than hard copy or would like a mixture of both. We will roll it out with a few qualifications at first and over time will build and expand it to include others. Stay tuned and we will let you know what is available and when. METS have expanded the range of qualifications we deliver and have recently had Aged Care Certificates III and IV along with Certificate IV Frontline Management added to our scope of qualifications. If you d like further information about these qualifications please feel free to contact our friendly staff. In this edition of METS Matters you ll find amongst other Disability Services Manager Update possibility to another, then gathering in a pack to touch base, preen and exchange stories was fascinating to observe. Our own relatively small perch, provided a temporary stop for the collection of the obligatory freebie. If pens were a form of currency, we would indeed all be quite wealthy, (well my wife would, judging by the number of pens she collects in her pockets over the course of her working week). So what about our own small perch, a training organisation offering training in a range of Childcare, Disability and Aged Care qualifications. Well I'm pleased to say that although not as shiny as those bigger and things, information from Children s Services Training Manager, Noeleen Alchin, on the upcoming changes occurring to the Children s Services qualifications along with the motivational musings of our Disability Service Manager, Rob Ringer. I hope that as 2013 forges ahead you get a chance to stop, take a breath, have a look around and enjoy the scenery before you have to jump back on the roller coaster ride. Rick Paine-Bell General Manager better funded organisations, it attracted a roosting place for those students with a genuine interest in these fields. Now the world of Disability in particular is clearly on the Nation's agenda; these bright things are the future of the sector, free from shackles of the past, with the capacity to adapt, innovate and support one of our most vulnerable groups to live their life their way. It s that time of year again! The 2013 METS training awards are coming up. If you have an outstanding trainee or supervisor that you feel is worthy of receiving an award, make sure to keep an eye out for the nomination forms being sent to you shortly! Congratulations to all METS students who completed a traineeship or fee for service course! METS Exciting New Online Enrolment Process! With the launch of METS new website comes an exciting new process, Online Enrolment! You can fast track your traineeship, Self-Funded and short course enrolments too! Simply go to our website and click the enrol now button. It s that simple! And once METS receives your enrolment, we ll send you out an invoice and get your training started upon payment. Don t worry, METS can still book in your apprenticeship centre for you too, just let us know!

3 Page 3 May 2013 Children s Services Manager Update Welcome to another issue of METS Matters. In order to keep you up to date with future changes in our sector, students and employers should be aware that as we move into the latter part of 2013 and into 2014 there will be changes to the Children s Services Qualifications currently available. The training packages have been reviewed and they are expected to be introduced by the middle to end of this year or beginning of next year The changes will include name changes and all qualifications will have a code change to reflect In response to the Children s Services sector concerns, there are some significant changes in the assessment process. Previously assessment guidelines have been less rigorous around practical skills application, however in the new package the assessment requirements are very prescriptive and require all registered training organisations to ensure students are assessed in a work environment wherever possible. There will be a new First Aid for education and care which will include asthma and anaphylaxis management which has already been approved by ACECQA. People should also be aware that currently on the ACECQA approval list, are those who have undertaken units and elements from Certificate III to cover the same management of these illnesses. Other notable changes are in relation to assessments of the unit working with babies and toddlers. In the short term, METS will endeavour to make the transition as smooth as possible for those wishing to move from a Certificate III CHC30712 to the new Diploma CHC Over the next few months we will be designing the appropriate material to support the new training package and will enlist the help of services to gain feedback on the new assessment tasks and materials. I will keep you posted as the information comes to hand. Over the past 12 months METS has received some valuable funds to assist with the up skilling of a number of existing workers to gain their Certificate III. Currently we have a number of students funded through DEC to gain their Diplomas as well. If there are existing employees in your services who require their Certificate III, please let us know and we can approach DEC for further funds to assist those individuals to meet the new requirements commencing The vast number of METS trainers are now on the National RPL Trainers list registered with DEEWR. The recent announcements by the Federal Government on the increase in funds for regional and rural areas for educators, has meant many more people are able to upgrade and up skill to Certificate III and Diploma level qualifications. If you are from the listed post codes you should look into the potential of this program for you. Details can be obtained from: deewr.gov.au/recognition-priorlearning-early-childhood-educators Over the last 12 months we have conducted many successful 3hr and 1 day workshops in Child protection, First Aid, Leadership and Meeting the NQF, to name a few. If your centre requires tailored training METS is more than happy to discuss options. Our training generally comes from the needs of our services and responds to you. Noeleen Alchin Children s Services Manager Reminder for Students How to add a header and/or footer in Microsoft Word All students MUST have their first and last name clearly printed on every page of their assessments, whether they be hand written, printed, ed or faxed. - With your assessment open in Microsoft Word, click Insert in the top left corner along the tool bar - Click Header or Footer and select the template you d like to use - Insert your first and last name - Once finished, close the Header or Footer editor Your full name will now be on every page of your assessment task

4 Page 4 May 2013 YOUR QUALIFICATION Enrolling into a traineeship for one year or more for a Certificate III program and up to 3 years for any Diploma shows your commitment to your sector and after all that hard work, you deserve to receive your qualification. What an achievement!!! Sadly though, there are some trainees who have not followed through on fee payments or signed and returned relevant forms needed to complete the paperwork at METS. When you completed your traineeship you may have received a Certificate of Proficiency from State Training Services; this indicates the end of the traineeship BUT is NOT your qualification. METS issue you with your qualification that will show all the Units of Competency achieved. We have a number of certificates on file awaiting payment or the return of forms. If you think you may be in this group of trainees and would like to receive your certificate please call METS to make payment or enquire as to what is needed by the Administration team. Remember from 2014 it will be compulsory to hold a minimum Certificate III in Children s Services to work in a Childcare service. If you require a reprint of your certificate the cost is $40. - METS Admin team. METS is now offering Employment Based Training in Aged Care! We are offering a personalised service to employers and students in our delivery of Nationally Accredited training in Aged Care. You can be either a fulltime or part time employee. You will receive face to face training and support from a qualified METS trainer and you will never have to leave your service for offsite training! By enrolling with METS as a trainee your employer could be eligible to receive employer incentives. Traineeship enrolments can also be subsidised for eligible students. If you prefer correspondence training we can arrange it. RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) is available for each unit of competency based on work experience in the sector. If you would like more information or to enrol any of your team in a METS course, kindly call our office on and speak to one of our friendly team.

Students and employers now have the option to enrol online in both full qualifications and short courses. Keep a look out for our new student section coming soon, offering METS trainees and self-funded students the opportunity to download learning materials online, chat in student forums and submit assessments. Updated traineeship fees as of 1st January 2013 As of the first of January 2013, traineeship enrolment fees are as follows: New Entrant Traineeships: $478 ($100 concession if eligible) Existing Worker Traineeships: $350 ($200 refundable bond) Please note: existing worker traineeships incur further costs, invoiced to the employer.
