Competency-based training (CBT) is an approach to vocational education and training that places emphasis on a person s ability to demonstrate skills, knowledge and understanding. All learners enrolled in the Certificate III in Children s Services will be required to complete written assessment tasks, as well as workplace assessment tasks. An Assessor may also call you to have a competency conversation, which will be based on strategic questions, to fill any gaps. Empower College will appoint each learner with an Assessor who has the relevant qualifications and has significant experience in both the early childhood section and vocational training sector. Empower College provides a competency-based approach to training which places emphasis on a person s ability to demonstrate skills, knowledge and understanding. Therefore, you will not get a graded mark; rather, you will be deemed competent or not competent. You will be assessed both on and off the job. On the job workplace assessment enables you to demonstrate and apply your skills and knowledge in the workplace. Off the job assessments will enable you to provide evidence of the essential skills and knowledge across the areas outlined in the range statement. Empower College trainers will provide you with feedback regarding your assessments. Both written and practical assessments have marking sheets to be completed. If you have not met competency, you will receive feedback and guidance and have the opportunity to resubmit the assessment, note you will be given 3 attempts. If you have been deemed not competent and believe that the assessment decision is incorrect or unjustified, you may appeal the decision as per the Appeals Policy. You will be required to undertake practical experiences within the workplace to demonstrate your competence.
