ATTENDANCE Philsphy Chanhassen High Schl recgnizes that daily attendance is critical t academic achievement and therefre expects every student t attend schl and class n time, every day. Chanhassen High Schl has set, as a minimum standard, 95% attendance. This means that a student wuld nt miss mre than tw days f schl in a semester. Students with 7 full r partial days f unauthrized cumulative absences frm schl are in vilatin f state cmpulsry educatin law and are cnsidered truant. Because students wh have gd attendance recrds are mre likely t achieve higher grades and enjy schl life t a greater degree, it is extremely imprtant fr students t be in attendance each day. Therefre, the schl recmmends that dctr and dental appintments, family vacatins, etc. be scheduled after schl r n days when schl is nt in sessin. Parents/guardians wh chse t have their sn/daughter absent frm schl fr an extended perid f time fr a family vacatin shuld realize that their child's grades may suffer due t missing the interactins, discussins, labs, cperative grup wrk etc. that g n in each classrm. Sme missed activities are nt pssible t make up. The Chanhassen High Schl attendance plicy and prcedures are guided by the fllwing set f values. In sme instances, these values may cmpete with each ther. The Chanhassen High Schl attendance plicy and prcedures attempt t balance these values in the best interests f students and the schl cmmunity. Student academic excellence is the primary gal f Chanhassen High Schl. Althugh learning ccurs in a variety f settings, time in class is essential t learning s that students can receive instructin and cntribute as members f the cmmunity f learners. Schl staff, students, families and the cmmunity share respnsibility fr student attendance. T assure student safety and accuntability, families need t knw daily if their students are absent frm schl. When making decisins abut their students schling, families have the respnsibility fr ntifying the schl abut their students attendance. 18 year-ld students wh are independent students as defined by sectin 152 f the Internal Revenue Cde are required t abide by CNHS attendance rules and regulatins. Prcedures fr Absences If a student misses schl because f the reasns listed in the next sectin, a parent r guardian must ntify their child s Huse Office (Maple 556-3700; Pine 556-8900; Spruce 556-8800; Oak 556-3600) by phne (preferred) r by written message upn the student's return t schl. Please call yur child s Huse Office by 10:30 a.m. n the day f the absence. The student wh was authrized by a parent's phne message n the day f the absence may reprt directly t his/her first perid class upn return t schl. The student wh is authrized by written message upn his/her return t schl must reprt t his/her Huse Office fr an admit slip befre ging t class. If a student needs t leave the building fr a scheduled appintment, the parent r guardian shuld call the Huse Office, r send a nte with the student, indicating the time fr the student s release. The student shuld then pick up a pass t leave the building frm the Huse Office. When a student returns t schl, he/she must reprt back t the Huse Office fr an admit slip t class. Please nte that 18 year-ld students wh are independent students as defined by sectin 152 f the Internal Revenue Cde are required t abide by CNHS attendance rules and regulatins. Suspensins are excused absences and students will be permitted t cmplete make-up wrk fr missed classes.

An absence frm the authrized and unauthrized absences tables shwn abve (the first 2 tables) cunt twards the maximum absence plicy. Students will nt receive credit fr a class in which absences exceed 9 in a semester under the authrized and unauthrized categries. COUNTS TOWARD MAXIMUM 9-ABSENCE POLICY (SCHOOL) COUNTS TOWARD TRUANCY (COUNTY) COUNTS TOWARD MAXIMUM 9-ABSENCE POLICY (SCHOOL) Students will receive a Lss f Credit (LC) due t absences fr the class if they remain in the class the remainder f the semester, fllw behavir expectatins, and meet all curse requirements by the end f the semester. A Lss f Credit des nt affect a student s GPA.

Students will receive a Fail (F) if they are remved frm the class fr being disruptive r nt fllwing expectatins, r if they d nt meet the curse requirements. A Fail des affect a student s GPA. Appeals Prcess Students and parent(s)/guardian(s) may appeal the lss f credit when the maximum absence plicy is reached if special r unusual circumstances have led t the absences. Upn receiving ntice f the lss f credit, the student, parent(s)/guardian(s) may request an appeals applicatin frm the student s Cunselr. The cmpleted applicatin shuld be returned t the Cunselr and will be cnsidered at the next meeting f the Appeals Cmmittee. Appeal applicatins will nly be accepted during the first tw weeks f the fllwing semester. If additinal dcumentatin is requested by the Appeals Cmmittee, it must be submitted by the end f the fllwing semester. Furth Semester appeals will be handled befre the end f the schl year. Ntificatins/Interventins fr Maximum 9-Absence Plicy: CNHS Students are expected t be aware f their wn status in regard t tardies and absences in classes each semester. They will receive the fllwing infrmatin t assist them in this expectatin: If a student is absent frm class 3 times (excluding schl excused absences) during a semester, a written ntice frm the Cunselr will ntify the parent/guardian. If a student is absent frm class 5 times (excluding schl excused absences) during a semester, a written ntice frm the Cunselr will ntify the parent/guardian. A teacher interventin will als take place with the student. If a student is absent frm class 7 r mre times (excluding schl excused absences) during a semester, a written ntice frm the Cunselr will ntify the parent/guardian. This ntificatin is in regards t the maximum absences rule. This ntificatin will als infrm the student and parent(s)/guardian(s) f the lss f credit accrding t the maximum absence rule and infrmatin n the appeals prcess. Truancy: 7 Unauthrized Absences in Carver Cunty An unauthrized absence is ne in which the student is absent frm class/es withut the knwledge and cnsent f his/her parent r guardian and/r withut the apprval f schl fficials. N graded credit will be granted fr wrk missed when an absence is unauthrized, althugh teachers may still require making up missed wrk as a requirement f the curse. Als, a student leaving the building fr any reasn during the day withut getting a pass frm the nurse r Huse Office is unauthrized. Minnesta Statute (MS260.015, subdivisin 19) states that a high schl student wh is absent frm schl withut lawful excuse fr 7 partial r full cumulative schl days (nncnsecutive) is cnsidered t be truant. It may be necessary fr schl authrities t file truancy with the Carver Cunty Attrney s Office in these cases. When a student has been absent withut authrizatin frm a class r frm schl the student s Cunselr will meet with the student t determine why s/he was absent. If a student has been absent 3 r mre class perids n three schl days withut valid excuse, a letter frm the Cunselr will ntify the parent/guardian. If a student has been absent 5 r mre class perids n five schl days withut valid excuse, a letter frm the Cunselr will ntify the parent/guardian t infrm them f a required meeting with the schl and a cunty fficial. If a student has been absent 7 r mre class perids n seven schl days withut valid excuse, truancy will be filed with Carver Cunty Scial Services. Absences cunting tward truancy are cumulative thrughut the schl year and are nt restricted t a particular semester. Tardies Chanhassen High Schl is deeply cmmitted t student prmptness as being educatinally sund and as an imprtant aspect f successful schl and living. Prmptness in appearing fr class is ne indicatin f the student s cmmitment and attitude twards his/her academic experiences. Therefre, Chanhassen High Schl expects every student t be in class n time and will make every effrt t see that each student meets his/her respnsibility. There shuld be n students ut f class during the first and last 10 minutes f an instructinal perid.

In case f inclement weather, the schl may exercise discretin in admitting tardy students t class. Teachers will als maintain a cmplete recrd f tardiness, similar t absences, in the grade bk which can be used by the administratin in dealing with students and parents. A student tardy due t unavidable circumstances, as determined by the administratr, may be given cnsideratin n an individual basis. Tardy t Schl (TTS) Tardy t schl is defined as nt being in the building at the 8:10 bell. Students wh arrive after that are cnsidered tardy. This applies t excused as well as unexcused tardies. 1 st TTS/semester: warning 2 nd TTS/semester: warning/parent cntacted 3 rd TTS/semester: driver s parking permit suspended fr 3 days OR if a nn-driver, lunch detentin fr 3 days 4 th TTS/semester: driver s parking permit suspended fr 4 days OR if a nn-driver, lunch detentin fr 4 days 5th and subsequent TTS/semester: driver s parking permit suspended fr 10 days OR if a nn-driver, lunch detentin fr 10 days NOTE: Administratin reserves the right t suspend r revke parking permits, assign ISS (in schl suspensin) and/r OSS (ut f schl suspensin) fr chrnic ffenders. Tardy t Class (TTC) Tardy t class is defined as nt being in scheduled classrm at the bell. An unexcused tardy will result in an unexcused absence after 5 minutes. An excused tardy will result in an excused absence after 15 minutes. 1 st TTC/semester/class: warning 2 nd TTC/ semester /class: 1 lunch detentin 3 rd TTC/ semester /class: 1 lunch detentin and added t N Pass List which means they are nt allwed t be written a pass t leave class fr any reasn fr 4 weeks. 4 th and subsequent tardies/ semester /class may result in additinal lunch detentins, ISS (in schl suspensin), OSS (ut f schl suspensin) r parking permit suspensins. NOTE: 1 lunch detentin needs t be served within 24 hurs, 2 within 48, and s n. Lunch detentins nt served in the alltted time will result in placement n the N Pass List. It is expected that students arrive n time t schl and fr all classes. Students wh are tardy ver 15 minutes are cnsidered absent. If a student is late t schl and the tardiness is authrized, he/she is t reprt t the Huse Office fr an admit slip. Students wh are unauthrized tardy t schl shuld reprt t class. Valid excuses fr tardiness may be fund under the list f authrized absences; ther reasns wuld be cnsidered unauthrized. Extenuating circumstances shuld be referred t the Cunselr. Teachers reserve the right t assign lunch detentins fr tardiness. Such detentins shuld be served within 24 hurs. If a student is tardy t schl and is excused, he/she is t reprt t the Huse Office fr an admit slip. Students wh are unexcused tardy t schl shuld reprt t class. Valid excuses fr tardiness may be fund under the list f excused absences; ther reasns wuld be cnsidered unexcused. Extenuating circumstances shuld be referred t the Cunselr. Prearranged Absences Prearranged absences still cunt tward the maximum six-day attendance plicy. Hwever, prearranged absences shuld be cmmunicated t the teacher fr cllege visits, family trips, curt appearances, and ther absences fr which the student has prir knwledge. A parent r guardian shuld ntify the schl at least three schl days in advance f the scheduled absence. A prearranged absence frm will then be initiated by the huse ffice fr students t have signed by their teachers and Cunselr. Students will be expected t find ut what wrk will be missed and t make arrangements with their teachers fr making up missed assignments. Make-up wrk may nt be available fr students prir t their absence if their teachers have nt been given at least three days ntice thrugh the prearranged absence frm.

Makeup Wrk If a student is absent (authrized) ne day nly, make-up wrk, including tests, will be due the fllwing day. (Ex.: A student is in attendance n Mnday and absent n Tuesday. When the student returns n Wednesday, he/she is respnsible fr all wrk assigned n Mnday. Any wrk assigned n Tuesday wuld be due n Thursday.) Students absent mre than ne day will receive an equal number f days t make up the wrk. It is the student s respnsibility t cntact the teacher and request the make-up wrk. If a student des nt make up the wrk within the alltted time, he/she will receive n credit fr the assignment r test. This plicy applies in all cases unless in certain circumstances, in the prfessinal judgment f the teacher, the deadline may be extended. Leaving the Building During the Schl Day Illness If a student shuld becme ill during the schl day, he r she must reprt t the nurse s ffice. A parent/guardian will be cntacted if a pass is issued t leave the building. Appintments If a student needs t leave the building fr a scheduled appintment, the parent r guardian shuld call the Huse Office r send a nte with the student indicating the time fr the student s release. Next, the student shuld pick up a pass t leave the building frm the Huse Office. When a student returns t schl, he/she must reprt t the Huse Office fr an admit slip t class. A student leaving the building fr any reasn during the day withut getting a pass frm the nurse r huse ffice is unexcused.
