- RailClamp Description RailClamp TVS diodes are specifi cally designed to protect sensitive components which are connected to high-speed data and transmission lines from overvoltage cased by ESD (electrostatic discharge), CDE (cable discharge events), and EFT (electrical fast transients). The RClamp 3354S incorporates srge rated, low capacitance steering diodes and a TVS diode in a single package. Each device will protect p to for high-speed lines. The RClamp3354S can withstand a high level of srge crrent (25A, 8/2s) while maintaining a low loading capacitance of less than 5pF. The high srge capability means it can be sed in high threat environments in applications sch as Gigabit Ethernet, telecommnication lines, and LVDS interfaces. The RClamp3354S is constrcted sing Semtech s proprietary EPD process technology. The EPD process provides low stand-off voltages with signifi cant redctions in leakage crrent and capacitance over silicon-avalanche diode processes. It featres a low operating voltage of 3.3 volts for sperior protection. The RClamp3354S is in a 5-lead SOT-23 package. The leads are fi nished with lead-free matte tin. Applications Information Gigabit Ethernet Protection Soltions Ethernet systems with connections external to the bilding are sbject to high-level transient threats. This type of eqipment may even be reqired to meet the srge immnity reqirements of Telcordia GR-89. Reliable protection of the Ethernet transceiver reqires a device that can absorb the expected transient energy, clamp the incoming srge to a safe level, and yet remain transparent to the system nder normal operation. The RClamp3354S has been designed to meet these demanding reqirements. Transient Protection When designing Ethernet protection, the entire system mst be considered. An Ethernet port incldes interface magnetics in the form of transformers and common mode chokes. Transformers and chokes can be discrete components, bt integrated soltions that inclde the RJ-45 connector, resistors, capacitors, and protection are also available. In either case, the transformer will provide a high level of common mode isolation to external voltages, bt no protection for metallic (line-to-line) srges. Dring a metallic transient event, crrent will fl ow into one line, throgh the transformer and back to the sorce. As the crrent fl ows, it charges the windings of the transformer on the line side. Once the srge is removed, the windings on the line side will stop charging and will transfer its stored energy to the IC side where the PHY IC is located. The magnitde and dration of the srge is attenated by the indctance of the magnetics. The amont of attenation will vary by vendor and confi gration of the magnetics. It is this transferred energy that mst be clamped by the protection circitry. 23. Semtech Corporation. 5
