The industrial internet is still in a formative stage. Many potential adopters need to develop a clearer picture of the landscape before they drive through it. It is important to share with them best practices, Jeff Immelt CEO General winning Electric use cases and operational models to get them started on their industrial internet journey. Industrial Internet of Things: Unleashing the Potential of Connected Products & Services, World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Accenture, January 2015
Cisco, GE, and Intel have referenced a $4 trillion global opportunity across industry over the next 10 years arising from reduced costs, increased efficiency, and new value creation through the application of IIoT technologies. The Smart Industry Opportunity Smarter devices and sensors, digital networks, and increasingly powerful software applications and collaboration tools are leading the next industrial revolution. The accelerating application and integration of digital technologies over an industrial asset s lifecycle promise substantial gains in productivity, efficiency, flexibility, and worker safety. Further, the integration of these powerful new tools can ignite new service offerings and business models as well as reduce the cost, time, and risk involved in bringing new products to market and new production capabilities on line. Across this new Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), or Industrial Internet, the challenge at hand is not only to securely connect and seamlessly integrate myriad digital systems, but to transform this increasingly big data into context-sensitive, actionable information delivered to the right people and systems, at the right time, and in the right place anywhere around the world. Every company will have to make the transition to software, data and analytics, predicted GE CEO Jeff Immelt at a recent industry conference. Whoever uses data the best will be the winners in the 21st century. Production machines are still important, Immelt continued, but they re just the cost of entry. They re increasingly surrounded by analytics, by information, by technology embedded in service relationships. The vertical market segment poised to benefit most from this ongoing digitization and increasingly pervasive network connectivity is discrete and process manufacturing, together with mining and energy. Such industrial activity represents a full third of the $70 trillion global economy, as well as 50% of global energy consumption and 100% of its production. As such, prognosticators such as Cisco, GE, and Intel have referenced a $4 trillion global opportunity across industry over the next 10 years arising from reduced costs, increased efficiency, and new value creation through the application of IIoT technologies. Yet, other research by Rockwell Automation indicates that 6 out of 7 industrial enterprises have yet to connect their production equipment to their enterprise networks. To begin to realize the promised value of the Industrial Internet, marketers must begin to show the value of IIoT deployments, said Inbar Lasser-Raab, VP, products & solutions marketing - enterprise segment, Cisco, at the 2014 IoT World Forum in Chicago. While the Internet of Things is real today, our goal is to take it from early adoption to very wide deployment, Lasser-Raab said. It s not about the things, it s about business value. Indeed, realizing this promise of greater efficiency, higher productivity, and new value creation won t happen automatically. Smart Industry the event, the magazine, and the digital media platform was created to serve the information needs of the global community that will turn this vision of the next industrial revolution into reality.

Smart Industry Sourcebook While in-person events and digital media are extremely powerful tools for connecting with prospects in the industrial business-to-business marketplace, print advertising remains a mainstay of the industry s leading technology suppliers. These marketing-savvy organizations realize that the vast majority of their potential customers are not actively seeking information on their companies products and services at any given time. But they are open to marketing messages when they lean back to read a magazine, when they re open to being informed of what s new and what s possible without a specific agenda in mind. Digital media, in particular, excels when a prospect is further along the marketing funnel they re leaning forward to find a solution to a particular problem, responding to a resonant white paper offer or searching the web. But if they re not familiar with your company and what it has to offer, the chances of a successful engagement plummet as well. Indeed, print advertising remains unequalled in its ability to cost-effectively deliver marketing messages to a large universe of potential customers who, at the moment, might not yet be ready to buy. Editorial Focus The first edition, to be released in June, will undertake to create A Map of the Industrial Internet Space. We ll update readers on the ongoing development of models and standards poised to impact the industry, and outline the supplier options in all of the key IIoT niches. The November Sourcebook will include highlights of October s Smart Industry Conference & Exhibit around the theme of Proof Tests for the Industrial Internet. Emphasis will be on actual business value already being realized, as well as the value proposition of multi-vendor test beds currently under development. Circulation and Bonus Leads Package Each print issue (June and November) of the Smart Industry Sourcebook will be delivered to 30,000 select individuals from Putman Media s extensive database of industrial professionals. (See page 2 for industry and title breakout.) Print advertisers in the Sourcebook will also receive 100+ qualified sales leads generated by promotion of a special infographic e-book released in conjunction with each 2015 Sourcebook. To satisfy the need for this top-of-the-funnel awareness within the Smart Industry community, two print editions of the Smart Industry Sourcebook are planned for 2015. Editorially, the Sourcebook is intended to keep the Smart Industry community up to date on IIoT developments, but more importantly to offer concrete ideas for realizing business value from the application of IIoT technology.
