Ethics in Action is a student-led initiative that exemplifies the importance we place on values-led management at Dalhousie University s Faculty of Management. Its goal is to equip tomorrow s business leaders with the tools to make complex business decisions while adhering to ethical principles. The undergraduate case competition, built on the former Dalhousie Business Ethics Case Competition, now includes an MBA case competition. In addition, a Canadian business leader will be presented with the Scotiabank Ethical Leadership Award, the winners of a video essay contest on ethical leadership will be announced, and related conference events will feature leading topics in ethical leadership and action. The two-day event provides a forum for students from across North America to discuss and better understand what ethical leadership means to them. This year s event, to be held November 14 & 15, will attract students from some of the highest ranked business schools. Students from the Corporate Residency MBA program collaborate with faculty to plan the event. Graduate and undergraduate students from all four Schools of the Faculty will assist this team making it a multi-disciplinary student-run initiative. While student volunteers passion and energy are important for success, the support of sponsors is critical to making Ethics in Action a reality. Scotiabank is the lead sponsor, but more support is needed. As a sponsor, your organization will be positioned as one that stands for ethical leadership. Sponsors will be exposed to some of the top MBA and undergraduate business students from Canada and the United States. You will be able to see them work through important challenges and opportunities associated with leadership today and you will have the opportunity to meet and speak with students eager to learn about your organization. Furthermore, attaching your company s name to Ethics in Action affords you the privilege of making a true contribution to setting the bar for ethical leadership while supporting students in their academic and professional journey. Ethics in Action presents a tremendous opportunity for Dalhousie, the Faculty of Management, and the Rowe School of Business. I sincerely hope you will consider lending the support of your organization to Ethics in Action and that you will join the students and faculty on November 14 & 15, 2014. Your interest and help is greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Peggy Cunningham Dean, Faculty of Management
Ethics in Action is a new student-led initiative to engage students and the Canadian business community in challenging and shaping the future of ethical business leadership. Thanks to the support of the Scotiabank Bright Future philanthropic program, the Ethics in Action conference is held annually in November at Dalhousie University s Rowe School of Business in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The conference will take place November 14 15, 2014, and will feature a case competition, a student video and essay contest and the presentation of a national ethical leadership award for corporate, non-profit and government leaders. For student delegates and business leaders there will be workshops designed to develop and enhance the skills and knowledge used in practicing ethical leadership. The weekend will also feature informative guest speakers and networking events to allow students to interact with industry experts and peers from across the continent. The development of strong ethical leadership is a strategic priority for Scotiabank and a critical component of our continued success over the last 180 years. The Scotiabank Ethical Leadership Initiative will foster a new generation of leaders, well-grounded in the principles of ethical leadership, making our donation an investment that will undoubtedly yield both immediate and future returns. Rick Waugh, CEO (Scotiabank) Based on the Dalhousie Business Ethics Case Competition (DBECC), which has attracted teams of business students from top U.S. and Canadian schools for the past ten years, Ethics in Action provides an opportunity for students from across North America to think, reflect on and discuss what ethical leadership is to them and how to apply it in their own lives. We strive to provide more than just an arena to compete and present, since business ethics is more than just doing the right thing ; it is about making the tough decisions that every business has to make, big or small, regardless of the industry. We want to expose, examine and discuss the grey areas inherent in these decisions because we believe that while they can be the most challenging decisions to make, they can also be the most rewarding. Ethical leadership is at the core of our culture and values, which include operating with integrity and respect. We believe that businesses have a responsibility to support economic and social progress for a brighter future for everyone, and are proud to enable the Rowe School of Business in developing ethical leaders of tomorrow. Brian Porter, President (Scotiabank)
