Aaron s Apple: Vision & Mission Vision: To prevent chronically ill children from suffering when they cannot afford the medical treatment they need. Mission: Providing Direct Funds for Medication to assist Chronically Ill Children. About Aaron s Apple Aarons Apple was born from the belief that every child has the right to experience a happy and pain free life; and that every parent has the right to raise their child in a dignified manner. Parents of children with chronic illness are faced with the harsh reality that they are unable to control the illness that their child has been diagnosed with. One of the options to ease the suffering of these children comes in the form of highly priced medical treatments. Some parents are fortunate enough to have medical insurance that will cover such high costs. However many are not so fortunate and simply don t have the financial means to ease the intolerable pain that their child is experiencing. Aaron s Apple s primary goal is to help families cope with overwhelming medical costs. As the costs of delivering healthcare rises, the ability of families to afford the appropriate and necessary healthcare diminishes. This places enormous stress upon families. In their time of need Aaron s Apple helps families pay for expensive medication, treatments and patient amenities. No child should ever have to suffer in pain, and no parent should ever have to watch their child suffer because they cannot afford to pay for treatment. Aaron s Apple makes treatments possible. Your support makes Aaron s Apple possible. Page 2
Aaron s Story Hi, I m Aaron. When I was 7 years old I was taken to the hospital with terrible stomach-aches. No one knew what was going on and I was very sore. It was very painful for me to eat or drink. I stayed in the hospital for two weeks. I had many, many needles and tubes put everywhere. Sometimes it was really sore and very scary for me. Finally the doctors told me I had Crohn s disease, which made my tummy sore. I tried many medicines to make me feel better nothing worked. I missed three months of school and I lost 30 pounds. The doctors told my parents that I needed a very special medicine given to me by an infusion every 6-8 weeks, and that I would have to I stay in the hospital for a whole day. Thankfully, my family has insurance that pays for my treatments. My medicine costs more than $40,000 every year. If I did not have access to this medicine, I could still be very sick. Every time I went to the hospital, I would give a donation to make other children feel better. Then I decided to start a charity called Aaron s Apple. My charity will help families that cannot afford expensive medications. - Aaron, Age 11 Page 3
Aaron s Apple operates under Chai Lifeline, a registered Canadian Charity. Chai Lifeline touched Aaron s heart when he was so ill in early 2008. It was because of this amazing organization that Aaron became inspired and made the decision to help others as he was helped. When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, the entire family is affected. Families literally can be torn apart as one parent moves into the hospital to be with the sick child. Chai Lifeline Canada steps in, offering whatever is needed. Incredible programs and services are provided such as: Counseling Big Brothers and Sisters Tutoring Family Retreats Special sibling programs Important information Two extraordinary summer camp programs for seriously ill children Peer and professional support Families retain a sense of normalcy and hope, while fighting even the direst pediatric diseases. All programs are free of charge. Aaron s Apple is proud to be providing direct funding to SickKids Patient Amenities Fund. This fund provides much-needed assistance to families dealing with the financial burden of a child s illness Although public health insurance covers the cost of medication for inpatients, families are responsible for the cost of medication once they return home. This can pose significant financial difficulty for parents whose children are not eligible for government assistance or covered under private benefit plans. Sometimes, the only medication that will work for a child is not covered by private or public benefit plans. And for lower-income families, even relatively inexpensive medication can cost more than they are able to afford. The Patient Amenities Fund ensures that a child's health is not further compromised by financial difficulty by helping families in need with the cost of medication. For families who do not have coverage for a prescription and cannot afford it, this means that a sick child is able to access life-saving or life-enhancing drugs that they would otherwise go without. With your generous support, the Patient Amenities Fund is helping these children live healthier lives. Page 4
