4 40 years of saving lives In 1974 the world s first register of potential bone marrow donors was created by Anthony Nolan s mother, Shirley, in the hope of finding a cure for the life-threatening blood disorder her son had been born with. Today Shirley and Anthony s legacy lives on. Each day we give the chance of life to three people with blood cancer and have provided a total of over 13,000 potentially lifesaving transplants. And it s only because of the support of amazing people like you that we have been able to do that. But we still can t find a matching donor for everyone who comes to us. That was Shirley s vision when she set up our charity, and we will not rest until it has been achieved. That s why we need your lifesaving support. our story. And, when you need a transplant, it literally is a matter of life or death we can t waste a single minute. That s why our register is so vital. Each person on it is a potential lifesaver, ready to do something amazing when someone is in desperate need of the transplant that could be their last chance. Donating is quick, simple and straightforward 9 out of 10 people donate their stem cells in a process similar to giving blood. But it is urgent. So if you re healthy, aged between and weigh over 50kg, sign up to be a potential lifesaver today. I m a donor. I m a lifesaver. It was an immediate decision. 7 The more money you raise, the more lives we can save 100. That s how much it costs to recruit, tissue type and look after a new donor on our register. Someone who could save a life. The maths is simple: the more money we raise, the more lives we can save. No matter how you choose to raise funds, every pound will help save lives. From running a marathon to baking cakes, giving in memory or providing a regular donation, you can play an essential role. So join in and help us achieve something remarkable. I m a fundraiser. 8 Each new life could save another If you re pregnant then you (and your beautiful newborn baby) could save a life by donating your umbilical cord. After a baby is born, the umbilical cord and placenta are usually thrown away as clinical waste. But inside are vital stem cells that could be used to save a life. Donating is completely safe for you and your baby. In fact, when our specially-trained staff collect your cord blood after your baby is born, you ll barely even know they re there. So, if you re giving birth in one of our listed hospitals, make your special day even more extraordinary and donate your umbilical cord. I m a MUM. I m a lifesaver. I would definitely donate again.
