With proper eyewear, it is estimated that 100% of eye injuries could be prevented.

3 International Blind Golf Association (IBGA) Established in 1997, blind golf is an adapted version of the sport for blind and partially sighted players and includes only minor modifications to the standard rules of golf. Golfers play with a sighted coach who assists the golfer in describing distance, direction and characteristics of the hole and helps with club-head alignment behind the ball, prior to the stroke. From this point, the golfer is on his/her own and it is his/her skill that determines the resulting stroke. The only relaxation of standard rules is that a blind or partially sighted golfer is allowed to ground his/her club in a hazard. CNIB s Eye Safety Awareness Programs One of CNIB s priorities is to promote eye safety at work, play and home. CNIB s Industrial Eye Safety Program is aimed at educating organizations and their workers about eye safety in the workplace, building a culture of safety and reducing the associated costs of workplace eye injury. CNIB offers this program, for a fee, to employers across the province. CNIB believes we can encourage Albertans to protect their sight and build a culture of safety through our Eye Safety Awareness Program. This program reaches out to educate the public, especially individuals participating in high risk activities, about the importance of eye protection and eye safety. The CNIB Outta Sight Golf Classic raises awareness of eye safety and promotes these vital initiatives. Between there were over 5,000 eye injury claims accepted by WCB Alberta. The cost associated with this number of claims is almost 10 million dollars.

I played 21 years and never had an eye injury The first thing that went through my mind was, I don t want to lose my eyesight. I really believe guys should be wearing them. I didn t say that a week ago. - NHL player Steve Yzerman Eye injuries can cause serious vision loss or even blindness. They are one of the most frequently treated accidents in hospital and emergency rooms. Keeping your eyes healthy includes keeping them safe from injury. Whether at work or at play, potentially serious eye injuries can happen if the proper precautions are not taken. Thousands of workplace eye injuries are reported every year in Canada. The most serious of these result in blindness. Severe eye injuries have an enormous impact on a person s life and on those close to them. Individuals sustaining eye injuries may require years of rehabilitation and vocational retraining in order to relearn how to perform daily tasks and get back to work. Employers also incur a direct cost for these injuries: loss and replacement of the injured worker, low morale among coworkers, increased insurance premiums and, in some cases, fines. Millions of Canadians of all ages participate in some form of physical activity or sport; but often, the last thing players think about on their way to the court, rink or field is eye protection. They likely wear pads, helmets and various protective guards, but use nothing to protect their eyes, which do not recover from an injury as easily as broken bones -- if at all. These statistics are sobering, when you consider that 100% of all eye injuries are preventable with the use of properly fitted safety eyewear and by eliminating environmental hazards.
