The 8 Steps t Perfrmance Mnitring STEP 1: Lgging In and Updating Yur Prfile Enter yur accunt by using the 'LOGIN' buttn in the tp right hand crner f the fllwing page: When yu lgin fr the first time, yur accunt is activated. Please take a minute t cmplete the accunt details frm. Nte: Yur lgin credentials ( and passwrd) can be fund in the cnfirmatin yu received when yu signed up fr a Clud Mnitr accunt. If yu have lst these details yu can request a passwrd resend by clicking the Frgt passwrd? link in the lgin area. 7 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr Nw that yu knw hw t mve arund, let's start with setting up yur cntacts. A cntact shuld be entered fr each individual (including yurself) and grup that needs t receive perfrmance mnitring infrmatin. Cntacts can receive infrmatin in the fllwing frmats: Alerts: SMS/text message alerts are sent when prblems are detected Reprts: PDF reprts cntain detailed infrmatin abut yur systems' perfrmance News: General CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr news, Sftware Vulnerability news, CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr netwrk status, benchmarking newsletters, etc. Internal messages: The grup message tl can be used t send simultaneus messages t multiple cntacts The abve CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr infrmatin can be sent thrugh different channels, including: Text messages r SMS Twitter Actin (URL) T add a cntact: Click the Cntacts tab in the Settings menu. Click the New cntact buttn. Select the cntact type (ne f the channels listed abve) and prvide the cntact s actual address, fr example, an address. Give the new cntact a name. Chse a name which makes it easy fr yu t remember what it is fr example "Jim's mbile, r "Mgmt Team . Yu can define a wrking schedule fr each cntact. This is particularly useful if the channel is fr alerts, s that alerts can be sent t a specific cntact nly during their wrking days/hurs. Fr SMS/text message cntacts there is an additinal step. After saving a SMS/text message cntact, a cnfirmatin cde is sent t the specified mbile number. Yu need t enter it int the Cnfirmatin cde field t activate the cntact. If n cnfirmatin message is received within a few minutes, click the Try ther rutes buttn. This will generate a cnfirmatin message frm all the CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr SMS gateways. The first message yu receive is the ne yu shuld use. If n message is received, make sure the mbile phne number is crrect and then cntact the CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr helpdesk. 7 Cpyright 2013 CA. 8 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr The Escalatin Grup is a very useful alerting feature. If persistent errrs are detected, CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr sends alerts t yur escalatin grup. This feature ensures that if ne individual is unavailable, ther members f yur rganizatin will be infrmed f persistent prblems, giving yu the chance t rectify issues befre yur custmers encunter them. Yu may like t set up yur escalatin grup t initially send alerts t technical supprt staff, fllwed by middle management and eventually yur CTO. When the first SMS/text message cntact is defined, an escalatin grup is autmatically created. T create a new escalatin grup, click the new grup buttn in the Cntacts verview page. Select the rder in which yu want alerts t be sent and after hw many errrs the cntact shuld be alerted. Click the Mre buttn t add additinal cntacts int an escalatin grup. Tick the Default cntact checkbx t make the cntact r grup the default cntact. This means that this cntact is pre selected during the definitin f mnitring rules. STEP 4: Setting Up yur Mnitring Definitins (Mnitring Rules) Mnitrs are used t perfrm certain type f checks n yur server r website. Fr instance, yu can set the type f a rule t ping if yu want t check yur servers availability acrss the netwrk. T add mnitrs: G t the Mnitrs tab, in the Settings menu. Click the Add rule link. Yu culd start with an http type rule, t check n yur website's uptime and perfrmance. Name the rule. It is always useful t assign a name that will remind yu f the specifics f this rule, fr example Website hme page. The next field is the type f the rule. The available types are: cnnect: Checks if a TCP cnnectin at the specified prt is available. ping: Checks whether yur server is reachable acrss the netwrk. http: Checks the HTTP prtcl respnse frm yur website. pp3: Checks if the POP (incming mail) prtcl is wrking n yur server. smtp: Checks if the SMTP (utging ) prtcl is wrking n yur server. imap: Checks if the IMAP ( retrieval) prtcl is wrking n yur server. ftp: Checks the FTP prtcl respnse frm yur server. 8 Cpyright 2013 CA. 9 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr ldap: Checks the LDAP prtcl respnse frm yur server. scp: Checks the SCP prtcl respnse frm yur server. plugin: Mnitrs yur server behind a firewall. dns: Checks DNS servers. https: Checks respnses frm the https prtcl, which is used n ssl secured web sites. sip: Checks the SIP prtcl which is used fr multimedia cmmunicatin sessins (VOIP, instant messaging etc.). script: Allws supprt fr custm multi step scripts and full page lads. Nte that nt all types are available in all subscriptin packages. T check yur website uptime, select rule type http frm the drp dwn menu and add the address (URL) f yur website e.g., r Yu have nw finished the required fields fr a basic cnfiguratin. The ther ptinal fields are: Match string: Use this if yu want t check fr specific text in yur website r t check if yur webpage generates what it shuld (errr messages etc.). Simply fill in the text yu wuld like t search fr. Warn me: Use this drp dwn bx t specify the cnditins under which yu wish t receive alerts. Yur ptins are: Never Immediately After 2 cnsecutive errrs After 3 cnsecutive errrs After 4 cnsecutive errrs After 5 cnsecutive errrs Alert Cntact: Select the cntact wh shuld be infrmed if prblems are detected fr this rule. Yur subscriptin is the default here, but yu can chse any f yur cntacts. Yu can save yur rule and CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr will start checking yur website. Click the Expert Mde buttn t see mre cnfiguratin ptins. They include the fllwing: Prt: Define the prt t check, this field has always a default value. 10 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr Pst variables: Specify the variables that will be POSTed t the Web server. Input shuld be f the frm: name=value, name2=value2. User name: Specify a user name in case the hst requires authenticatin. Passwrd: Needs t be specified as well if the hst requires authenticatin. First limit: Define the limit in millisecnds, under which yu think the server is perfrming well. Secnd limit: Define the limit in millisecnds, abve which yu think the server is perfrming badly. (Nte: if the ttal time stays between the first and secnd limit then the server is perfrming prly). Time ut in secnds: Define the maximum time a rule shuld wait fr a respnse. If the time limit ends withut a respnse, an errr is registered. Max number f bytes t dwnlad: If the dcuments t check are very large, then the time ut frm the previus field might nt be sufficient fr a cmplete dwnlad. In this case yu can set the maximum number f bytes t read. Delay between checks: Specify the delay between the subsequent checks f the rule. Check perid: Define a specific time interval t check the rule. Check n these days nly: Define which days f the week yu want the rule t be checked. Remind me again after an alert in: Select the interval between the subsequent reminders f a persisting errr. Alert when up again: Check the bx t receive a message when the rule is wrking again as specified. Maintenance schedule: Specify maintenance schedule fr this rule. Errrs that ccur during this maintenance time slt are shwn, but are marked as errrs during maintenance. Flder: Flders can help yu rganize yur mnitrs and grup them. This can be very useful. Fr example, yu can activate/deactivate many mnitrs that perfrm checks in the same netwrk at nce. Yu can add flders in the main screen f the rule settings as fllws: Click Add Flder Click the newly created flder t change the name and status. After yu save, select a rule by ticking the actin bx. Frm the actin menu (drp dwn bx), select Mve t flder <yur flder's name.> Tags: Assign text labels t rganize yur mnitrs. Tags can be used regardless f the flders. 10 Cpyright 2013 CA. 11 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr User agent: Defines the user agent annunced by the CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr mnitring statins whenever they visit yur server. Checkpint rder algrithm: Here yu can influence the use and rder f the CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr wrldwide checkpints used by yur rule. The ptins are: Randm: Randm checkpint is chsen every time the rule is checked. Master: First check is dne frm a checkpint specified by yu. Sequential: Use all checkpints in the rder yu specify. Sticky: When a checkpint detects an errr, the rule will be checked nly frm that lcatin until the errr disappears. Checkpint Selectin: Define which checkpints yu want yur rule t be checked frm. Ntes: This is yur persnal ntepad. Yu can add any nte yu like. This ptin desn't have any effect in the scanning prcedure. Yu can easily custmize yur mnitrs. Mrever, yu can set up any type f rule yu want and cnfigure it accrding t yur needs. STEP 5: Discvering and Understanding Reprts All perfrmance mnitring checks are lgged and stred in the CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr database. This infrmatin is accessible via CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr reprts. 12 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr This sectin briefly explains the different types f reprts. Perfrmance Chart At the Perfrmance chart tab in the Mnitr menu, yu see an verview f yur mnitrs n an hurly basis. Yu can cnfigure reprts t display different grups (flders) r individual rules and the date and hur. Clicking n an individual "hur" lets yu drill dwn t the individual checks fr that specific time frame and rule. Further ptins are available by clicking the Expert View. Use the expert view t set the refresh rate f yur reprt, r chse rules accrding t their tags. If yu rest the muse cursr ver the hur rule grid, ballns appear with infrmatin abut the perfrmance during the selected time. The legend at the bttm explains the clrs in the grid. T see the lg file reprt fr a particular hur, click the required hur rule bxes in the grid. Lg Files In the Lg files tab yu can find mre detailed infrmatin fr each check, including the fllwing: Date Time Rule Descriptin: The status f the check; fr example, OK if all went well, r an errr descriptin Cde: The cde f the descriptin f the previus field Checkpints: The lcatin f the CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr statin that perfrmed the check Yu can custmize yur reprt by selecting any rule(s) yu want t see. Simply chse a mnitr r a grup f mnitrs in the field abve the lg table. Rest the muse cursr ver an individual lg recrd t see mre detailed infrmatin fr that check. Graphs At the Graphs tab, fund in the Mnitring menu yu can check data abut the perfrmance f yur sites in a single view. Yu can chse which real time graphs yu want t see via the Display drp dwn bx. The ptins include the fllwing: Availability: Cmpare the Uptime and Dwntime f yur server r site. Perfrmance: Check in millisecnds the reslve, cnnect, prcessing and transfer time at yur server. Cnnect time: The time required fr the cnnectin t yur server Prcessing time: Measured in millisecnds - the prcessing time Transfer time: The time fr the cmpletin f data transmissin Dwnlad time: See the dwnlad rate per secnd Ttal time: The sum f cnnect and dwnlad time in millisecnds Dwnlad size: The size f dwnlads frm yur server in bytes Transfer speed: Bytes per secnd f the transfer speed f yur servers Dwnlad speed: Bytes per secnd f the dwnlad speed f yur servers Prbes and errrs: The number f prbes and errrs, fr easy cmparisn Checks and Cnfirmed errrs: Watch in mre detail the prbes and cnfirmed errrs relatin Errr frequency: Take a clser lk at the errrs and the cnfirmed errrs f the abve graphs Site Perfrmance index: This graph gives an verview f the visitrs experience when using yur website. It shws the speed (lading time) and availability f yur web page in a single number All Graphs: Display all the abve graphs After yu have selected the graph yu require, yu need t chse a mnitr (r mnitrs) and time perid. Further cnfiguratin ptins are available by clicking the Expert view buttn. CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr ffers three different types f graphs: Ggle, Image r Flash charts. Using the expert view, yu can select the type yu prefer frm the Use chart type drp dwn bx. Current Status The Current Status reprt, als in the Mnitring menu, gives yu a cmplete verview f the status f yur servers. On this page yu can select autmatic refresh time and view recent statistics fr all yur mnitrs. Yu can als create custm status graphs by clicking the Add buttn. Psitin yur graphs anywhere n the page by dragging and drpping them frm their status bar. It is a gd idea t psitin the graphs mst regularly refreshed at the tp f yur status page. 14 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr Dwnlad Yu can dwnlad yur reprts via the Dwnlad tab, in the Reprts menu. When yu are in the dwnlad page chse the rule yu want t dwnlad, and set the time perid, either by chsing ne f the ptins at the Perid drp bx r by custmizing it at the Frm and Until fields. Yu can als select mnitrs accrding t the tags yu have set. Select the frmat yu want (the ptins are: Micrsft Excel 2003 XML, tab separated values r cmma separated values) and click the Dwnlad buttn. Access On the Access tab in the Reprts dashbard, yu will see a table which lists the CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr custmer(s) that have access t yur lg files and graphs, fllwed by a list f the lg files and graphs which yu have access t. Belw this is an area in which yu can grant permissin fr thers t see yur CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr lgs and graphs. Custmers that have been given access can immediately see yur graphs in their Graphs page by selecting ne f yur mnitrs frm the Of drp dwn bx. If yu have access t ther custmer s lgs, yu can see their graphs in the same way. Message Lg The Message lg tab in the Reprts menu prvides a cmplete lg f the messages sent t yu and yur cntacts. The date, time, cntact, type, status and a shrt descriptin fr each message can be seen and srted by day, week r page. STEP 6: Defining Custm Reprts T set up a custm reprt, click the Custm reprts tab in the Reprts menu. Click the Add buttn, enter a reprt name and select the kind and number f graphs yu want. When adding a graph, yu need t cnfigure it. The cnfiguratin ptins include: title, the type f the graph, the Mnitrs and /r Mnitr grup(s), and a specific graph type cnfiguratin. Yu can recnfigure r custmize yur graphs at any time by clicking n the pencil icn in the tp right hand crner. T delete a graph, click the delete icn n the status bar. T add recipients t a graph, click the arrw next t yur reprt's name. Yu can select yurself r any f yur cntacts frm the drp dwn bx and specify hw ften they receive the reprt. Yu can add mre cntacts t the list by selecting the + mre link. When yu finish adding cntacts click Save. Yur custm reprt is nw ready. In the Actins drp dwn bx n the right hand side f yur reprt, yu have the fllwing ptins: Edit: Lets yu recnfigure yur reprt. 15 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr Rename Deactivate: Deactivating a reprt instead f deleting it gives yu the ptin t easily activate it again frm the Actins drp dwn bx. Delete Preview: Dwnlad a preview f yur reprt fr the time perid yu want. STEP 7: Updating yur User Preferences and Payment Details This step shws hw t cnfigure yur accunt. Use the Accunt menu t change yur preferences, yur details and update yur payment details. User Preferences On the Accunt menu, click the Preferences tab and select any f the fllwing cnfigurable ptins: Reginal settings: Select yur default language frm the language drp dwn bx and als set yur lcal time zne. Default settings fr mnitrs: Set a default time ut (in secnds) fr all yur mnitrs and enter a first and secnd limit (defined in millisecnds). Nte: If the ttal time fr a check remains under the first limit, the server is perfrming well. If it remains belw the secnd limit but abve the first, the server is perfrming prly. If it exceeds the secnd limit, it is perfrming very prly. Yu can als define these values fr each individual rule when, cnfiguring them at the Mnitrs pages. Charts settings: Select the default charts type. Yur ptins are: Ggle charts: Generated by Ggle's API Image charts: PHP generated graphs Flash charts: Fr mre interactin with the user Checkpints selectin: Here yu can chse the default checkpints CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr will use t check yur mnitrs. Click a cntinent t chse all the checkpints frm that cntinent r select All t chse all the wrldwide checkpints. T change yur selectin, click the Clear link befre selecting different checkpints. 16 CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr Payment Details At the Payment tab in the Accunt menu, yu can see the balance f yur accunt and insert yur payment details. Yu can chse either f the fllwing: Online credit card payment: CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr accepts Visa, American Express and MasterCard. After entering yur credit card details, yu can specify the perid (in mnths) fr which yu want t receive CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr invices. Bank transfer: T pay by bank transfer, click the Make Payment link. The bank details fr CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr appear. Nte that yu need t specify yur accunt ID with each payment. This ID is lcated at the bttm f the Bank transfer page. Yu will als see there a link t Change subscriptin where yu can change the invice perid. STEP 8: Managing yur Subscriptin This area lets yu manage yu subscriptin in the fllwing ways: Change yur subscriptin package Custmize yur add ns Read infrmatin abut yur mnthly price and invices. At the Subscriptin tab in the Accunt menu, yu will find infrmatin abut yur current CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr subscriptin. The CA Nimsft Clud Mnitr packages vary with respect t several features such as the number f prtcls checked, number f checks per day, and number f servers checked. Yu can upgrade r dwngrade yur package at any time by clicking n the Edit buttn under yur subscriptins package.
