1 BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY Marketing and Communications Department JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Contract: Digital Designer Permanent Reference: Salary: Location: 26,659 to 29,429 per annum City North Campus Background There is an ever-increasing reliance on digital media when it comes to student recruitment and the role of the Digital Designer will ensure that Birmingham City University is at the forefront of this field. The post will be managed by the Online Marketing and CRM Systems Manager and be situated within the Marketing and Communications Department at University House, Birmingham. Purpose of the Post The role of Digital Designer has been created to support the Web Team in delivering a visually appealing but also functional web, social media and CRM presence. Digital projects that need support include web design (everything from microsites to solitary pages), designs, paid media banners and animations, social media graphics and image manipulation. Person Specification Requirements You must be focussed on digital design, with a creative eye. You ll have proven technical experience with the latest Adobe Creative Suite and know how to design for digital. You must have vast experience of working with CSS and HTML and you should be able to write html code from scratch. Java/JQuery or any animation skills would be an advantage. You will also need to be interested in new technologies. You will be well presented; a confident communicator; highly organised, hard-working and comfortable working as part of a team. 1

2 Principal Accountabilities Responsible to the Online Marketing and CRM Systems Manager, you will be required to: Post-specific: Work with the Online Marketing and CRM Systems Manager to champion, develop and manage the design of a customer-focused website and ensure it supports strategic goals. Regularly review existing digital design trends and conduct market research to identify best practice among competitor universities and within other sectors, putting forward recommendations and delivering future improvements. To act as the leading expert on digital design, providing advice, guidance and training on a range of requests from Faculties, Service Departments and Marketing and Communications colleagues. To support the work of communications colleagues in ensuring the web is used to best effect in showcasing and promoting the work and output of university students and staff, both internally and externally. Work with design colleagues in CICT to develop new ideas and help push forward development work, and move towards further integration between the teams. Create visually engaging pages on the Birmingham City University website and help to maintain a high standard and consistency of style across the site. Support the on-going maintenance of the Birmingham City University website by sourcing photographs, creating content and uploading content. Produce banners/web graphics and liaise with the Creative Services team and the web designer (CICT) on other digital design requests. Create html s for a range of internal and external communications, using best practice from the field. Manipulate photographs, predominantly using Adobe Photoshop, to create engaging images that could be used across our web, social media and CRM platforms. General: Assist with Open Days, Clearing and other special events as part of the Marketing and Communications Department and faculties, either in an office-based role or part of the activity itself, as required by the lead organisers. Provide hospitality to visitors and guests, where necessary, maintaining a high level of customer service at all times. Undertake other duties commensurate with the post as required by the department or directed by the Director of Marketing and Communications or Online Marketing and CRM Systems Manager. 2

To support a new developmental plan and ambitious income and recruitment targets, the University needs to be constantly maintaining and reinventing its online presence and communications. Specifically, we would benefit from more engaging digital design that offers clear call to actions. The Web Team, which this role is part of, will provide expert advice and guidance across the University, recognising the different approaches needed to engage stakeholders with differing needs from traditional school leavers, mature learners and employees to current students, alumni, employers and key opinion formers. Special Conditions: Occasionally, the post holder may be required to work outside of normal office hours. Marketing staff are required to support Open Days and Clearing activity, so restrictions are in place relating to the booking of holiday during mid-august and at certain other times of year. 3

4 PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential Desirable Physical High level of professional presentation. Qualifications Honours degree or equivalent in Graphic Design or a designrelated subject (such as art or media production) or extensive experience in a digital designer role. Experience A comprehensive knowledge of digital development processes. Extensive knowledge of Adobe CS (especially Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat). Vast HTML5 and CSS knowledge and experience. Experience of working on interactive design - websites, apps, banners, icons and button design etc. Awareness of the advantages of user testing. Java/JQuery or any animation skills Practical and Intellectual Skills Excellent oral communication skills that mean you are confident in showing your designs to stakeholders The ability to manage a varied and demanding workload. Computer literate, proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. Personal Skills Excellent interpersonal skills Articulate Confident Able to work to tight deadlines Persuasiveness, tact and diplomacy 4
