(3-0) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines the planning process and provides the tools and strategies necessary to effectively organize, implement, and monitor all the products, services, service providers and vendors that bring life to an event. PREREQUISITES: None COURSE OBJECTIVES: After completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify the services required to plan and implement a successful event. 2. Discuss the various types of events within the tourism industry. 3. Explain marketing strategies used in the event planning industry. 4. Determine appropriate market segments for the different types of events. 5. Analyze case study examples of real industry situations. 6. Prepare a request for proposal for a specific type of event. Final exam COURSE REQUIREMENTS: The course objectives will be met through the online learning environment via Blackboard. The course will be broken into an orientation module, 6 course modules, and a course wrap-up module. There will be eight (8) assignments, six (6) module quizzes, one (1) final, and one (1) course evaluation. Student Success Center. Tutors may be obtained through the Student Success Center. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office.

Late work will not be accepted. Academic Dishonesty: It is important to provide original work in this class. Any student who is found guilty of academic dishonesty will receive a grade of E for this course. All reference materials used for written assignments must be sourced using the MLA (Modern Language Association) style. Information from an Internet source must be given appropriate recognition. Written assignments that have been copied and pasted from the Internet will receive a failing grade. Incomplete Grades: Incompleteness will only be given if a student is unable to complete the course work due to an approved major problem or illness. An incomplete will not be given so that a student can avoid D or E grades. Students must notify the instructor that s/he is having trouble completing the course and discuss any relevant issues prior to the incomplete being given. Withdrawals: It is the student s responsibility to make sure a withdrawal from this course is officially completed by the deadline set forth by John A. Logan Community College. METHOD OF PRESENTATION: This class will be presented in the online format using Blackboard. Students are responsible for reading and studying required materials for each module, as well as completing assignments by the due date.
