1 JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE D. Hess SP 15 MFT PLC MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS 3 cr. (1-4) COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course gives the student hands-on experience with PLC systems. Included are certain technical and internal integration technologies utilizing automated manufacturing systems to demonstrate how CIM works in application. Supporting equipment will also be used. PREREQUISITES: MFT 103 and ELT 100 or ELT 102 or consent of instructor COURSE OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to: 1. Describe PLC features and capabilities. 2. Explain terms common to PLC users and maintenance. 3. Identify and explain the hardware components of a PLC system. 4. Describe and demonstrate PLC Operation features and programming of system. 5. Demonstrate and describe input/output specifications, wiring and applications. 6. Describe and demonstrate PLC installation. 7. Describe and demonstrate maintenance and troubleshooting procedures for a PLC system. 8. Plan a PLC system with specified devices to be controlled (programming and wiring diagram). COURSE OUTLINE: 1. Introduction of PLC features and capabilities 2. Terms common to PLC users and maintenance 3. Physical equipment configuration: description of hardware components 4. Installation: specifications and instructions 5. Input/output specifications and wiring 6. System maintenance and set-up 7. PLC applications and Advanced Programming 8. Variable frequency drives: Programming, set-up and wiring 9. Planning a PLC system: Layout, program, and hook-up
2 2 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of this course will require the student to successfully complete all exams, assignments, and labs. Students are expected to attend class within the College attendance policy. Grades will consist of test, homework, quizzes, lab projects, write-ups and a comprehensive final project. The final grade will be based on a total cumulative point system. Tests will be worth 100 points each. Homework will be announced and will vary in points. Lab projects that are assigned will require a conclusion detailing the findings of the project along with any programs, diagrams and answers that are required by the project. The lab project write-up will be a minimum of one page typed (this does not include the answers required in the lab, diagrams of programs required by the lab). All lab projects will be turned in by the due date given by instructor. If turned in late, points will be deducted. Each lab write-up will be worth varying points according to the difficulty of the lab. The final exam will be comprehensive over all material covered in the course and worth 100 points. All lab projects must be completed to pass this course. It is the responsibility of the student to bring all required materials to every lab session. Failure to bring needed materials will result in the student not being able to complete required labs needed to pass this course. Students must keep a 3-ring notebook with all test, homework, quiz and lab projects (all papers from class). Notebook must be in order of completion of work, with a table of contents as first page of folder. Required Materials for MFT Textbook 2. Composition notebook 3. 3 ring binder with 1 package of tab dividers 4. Scientific Calculator (TI-30XA or equivalent recommended) No programmable calculators will be allowed. 5. Digital Multi-Meter (DMM) - must measure volts, ohms, and milli-amps 6. Replacement fuses for meter 7. Safety glasses 8. Flash drive 9. The following tools: needle nose pliers lineman s pliers cable stripper #2 Philips screwdriver ¼ standard screwdriver Since part of the lecture material is not covered in the text and all labs are applied, attendance is vital to your success.
3 3 Every three days of absence will drop your grade one letter. Every three days of late arrival or leaving early will equal one (1) absence. NOTE: While in class it may be necessary to purchase other supplies or materials as the need arises. Student Success Center (Room C219). Services available for students include tutoring (both scheduled one-on-one tutoring and walk-in tutoring) and Disability Support Services. Students can drop in during the hours of operation for tutoring in the Math Help Room (C219 and C223) or the Biology Help Room (C243A). To receive one-onone tutoring, students should make a request early in the semester in the Student Success Center. The Student Success Center is also the place to arrange accommodations. John A. Logan College will make reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Contact the coordinator of Disability Support Services, Room C219B, ext. 8516, for more information. The coordinator must determine eligibility and arrange appropriate academic accommodations. However, it is the student s responsibility to register in advance of a school term with Disability Support Services and to turn in a class schedule each term to ensure accommodations are arranged. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course.
