1 HOCHSCHULE FÜR MUSIK UND THEATER Early Music Programmes of study: For instrumental subjects (recorder, transverse flute, historic oboe instruments, bassoon/dulcian, natural horn, natural trumpet, cornett, Baroque trombone, violin, viola, violoncello, viola da gamba, historic keyboard instruments) and historical singing. Duration of study programme: Area of professional activity: 8 semesters freelance work or teacher at music schools Master of Music - consecutive broadening artistic: continuation of study programme following a completed Bachelor or comparable degree in a for the main subject relevant area (4 semesters) - Consecutive deepening artistic: continuation of study programme following a completed Bachelor or comparable degree in Early Music (2 semesters) Duration of study programme: 2 or 4 semesters Master of Music Master Class Programme (Meisterklassenstudium) Continuation of study programme following a completed degree in the same or a related area. 2 Audition Requirements 1 st - 4 th semester I. Main Audition Criteria of evaluation are artistic imagination, knowledge and expression of style, technical skills, and the choice of difficulty of the audition repertoire according to the students own stage of development. The audition jury may stop the performance of a composition. The audition jury reserves the right to fully test the musical skills of the auditioning student. Accompanists (piano/harpsichord) will be provided. Please bring scores for the accompanists. The duration of the main audition is 10 to 30 minutes if not declared differently. The audition in the main subject can proceed in two rounds. - three works from three different countries and/or periods from the 16 th to 19 th century (recorder: 16 th to 21 th century) - continuo playing (only for harpsichord and fortepiano as a main subject) (Duration: ca. 20 minutes) 2. Voice - sacred and secular pieces of various stylistic periods, linguistic areas and periods (16 th to 19 th century), at least one with recitative (Duration: ca. 20 minutes) II. Audition in additional subjects The audition in the additional subjects can be cancelled if the auditioning student did not pass the main audition. 1. Harmony and counterpoint (for 1 st semester only) - knowledge of chords in their various positions as well as scales in Major, Minor, and modal Tonalities - invention of a second part to a given melody (either below or above the given melody) - harmonic analysis of a simple setting from the 18 th or 19 th century - continuance of a melodic incipit (Duration: ca. 15 minutes) 2

Ear training (for 1 st semester only) of a simple melody (singing) - repeat basic rhythms through tapping - repeat through singing or playing and name Major and Minor scales, intervals, triads and seventh chords - name a simple harmonic progression - repeat through singing and playing and analysis of a tonal melody (based on its route position, tessitura and form) 3. Harpsichord (except for students with Historical Keyboard - Instruments as their main subject) - performance of two works from two different periods, at least one of them from the 17 th or 18 th century of a simple basso continuo If the candidate is not yet capable of playing the harpsichord he/she may perform the programme on the piano. Artistic course of studies - at least three pieces from various stylistic periods from 16th to 19th century (for recorder: 16 th to 21 st century and one work from the 20 th or 21 st century) of a basso continuo (for harpsichord as a main subject) - a prepared basso continuo work (for harpsichord as a main subject) or Voice - sacred and secular works from various stylistic periods, linguistic areas, and periods (16 th to 19 th centuries), at least one of them with recitative - sight-singing 2. Compulsory Harpsichord (except for Historical Keyboard Instruments), if the exam had not been taken yet in this subject) - performance of two compositions of two stylistic periods, at least one from the 17 th or 18 th century of a very simple basso continuo If the candidate is not yet capable of playing the harpsichord he/she may perform the programme on the piano. 4

5 Master Class Programme Audition Requirements The audition jury may stop the performance of a composition. The audition jury reserves the right to fully test the musical skills of the auditioning student. - Applicants submit a widely diverse repertoire programme (about 60 minutes length) representing the central genres for their instrument or voice; therefrom audition jury will select a number of pieces. - Sight-reading / sight-singing of basso continuo (only for harpsichord as main subject) - Chamber music: a work performed with at least two other musicians. Chamber music partners are usually to be organized by the candidate. In exceptional cases and with announcement in due time, contact to students of the department as chamber music partners can be arranged.
