1 INSTRUMENTAL STUDIES & CO- CURRICULAR MUSIC PROGRAM To inspire, motivate and foster a deep love of music in all students INDIVIDUAL LESSONS AND ENSEMBLE GROUP OPPORTUNITIES & HOW TO BECOME INVOLVED
2 THREE PILLAR MUSIC PROGRAM Music education at Radford College aims to instil a deep love of music in all students. It offers a program that encompasses three pillars for successful music making that provide a broad educational experience that develops skills, knowledge, understanding and values. These pillars are classroom music, instrumental studies and co-curricular music. Each pillar supports and enhances the other two and are of equal importance in encouraging students to understand and enjoy music. At Radford, all students participate in classroom music from pre-kindergarten through to Year 8. From Year 9 to Year 12, classroom music is an elective subject. We encourage music students at Radford to participate in all three pillars of the program. This booklet provides information about what options are available within the instrumental studies and co-curricular music pillars and how students can become involved. Information is also provided regarding the requirements surrounding involvements in these programs. It should be read in conjunction with the Music Handbook that provides further detailed information about Radford s music program, participation requirements, fees and associated terms and conditions. INSTRUMENTAL STUDIES Instrumental studies are private music lessons held on a weekly basis with a visiting specialist instrumental tutor to build technical fluency, musical literacy and individual expression. Instrumental studies are the practical application of knowledge and understanding built in classroom music. Reporting back to parents on a student s progress is an essential aspect of the Instrumental Studies Program. Procedures are outlined in the Music Handbook. There are two options for participation in instrumental studies. These are the Beginner Instrumental Program (BIP) and Individual Lessons, as outlined below. Beginner Instrumental Program (BIP) The BIP Program is comparable with the ACT Instrumental Music Program. It is for students in Years 5, 6 and 7 who would like to join a concert band OR learn a concert band instrument. This program is the only avenue for beginner students in these year groups to learn a concert band instrument for the first time at Radford. Students are assigned an instrument based on the recommendation of a qualified tutor, instrument availability and future band needs. As the standard of play improves, students are brought together to play as a group. BIP Introduction Day/Lesson Time Participants are required to attend an Introduction Day at which they try a variety of musical instruments. Musical instrument allocation will occur at this session. Lessons are then held once a week at 7.30am on either a Tuesday or Thursday morning. The specific lesson day is determined by the instrument allocated and will be confirmed after the BIP Introduction Day. BIP Instruments BIP instruments include: bassoon; clarinet; double bass; euphonium; flute; French horn; oboe; percussion; saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone); trombone; trumpet and tuba. BIP Levy* $175 per Semester (includes group lessons and instrument hire if required). *Please see the Music Handbook for information regarding levy payment requirements in relation to absences and/or withdrawal from the program. Individual Lessons Visiting Instrumental Studies Tutors provide weekly half hour lessons for students in Years The Music Department arranges instrumental lessons and timetables teaching studios. Tutors liaise directly with the student and parents/caregivers to schedule lessons. A specific Instrumental Studies Lesson Tuition Contract** is made between the Tutor and the Parent/Guardian. Lessons are available in the following instruments: Years 1 4: cello, viola, violin, guitar and piano Years 5 12: Concert Band Instruments: bassoon, clarinet, euphonium, flute, French horn, oboe, percussion (includes drum kit), saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), trombone, trumpet String Instruments: tuba, cello, viola, violin, double bass, guitar (classical, electric and bass) Other: piano and voice lessons Students in years 5, 6 & 7 who are beginning lessons (never undertaken lessons) in a concert band instrument are required to commence in BIP. The Music Handbook outlines lesson requirements. For example: venues; lessons for students in Years 1-10 usually occur weekly during class time; lessons for students in Years are not permitted during class time; and lessons cannot exceed 30 minutes per week during class time. **All Music Tutors who provide Instrumental Studies Lessons at Radford College are self-employed professional musicians, they are not employed by Radford College. Radford s Music Department acts only as an intermediary, and there is a legal obligation associated with any Tuition Contract entered into with a Tutor. Participation Requirements Students undertaking instrumental lessons at the College are expected to belong to at least one co-curricular music group and participate in the Music Recital program, where appropriate. Lessons and group participation are a commitment for the full academic year. Friday Jams Performance opportunity Performance practice is available to all students in Years 5-12 in the form of Friday Jams. This takes place during Friday lunchtimes and individuals or groups may sign up to perform at the Music Administrator s office. Recital Performances Recitals provide practical performance experience. Dates for recitals are on the Performing Arts Calendar from the Music Co-Curricular Space on RadNet. Tutors advise if it is appropriate for students to participate in recitals. How to apply for BIP or Individual Lessons Please complete the Co-Curricular Music Program Application Form. This is available electronically from the Cocurricular Music Space on RadNet, or in hardcopy from the Performing Arts Centre Administration Office.
3 COCURRICULAR MUSIC The co-curricular music program consists of performance groups which rehearse before school, during lunchtimes or after school. Students have the opportunity of joining instrumental and/or voice ensembles. This provides a crucial social dimension to music making and is an important aspect of contributing to the school community. The groups include bands, orchestras, choirs and ensembles and they rehearse once per week. A rehearsal schedule is available on the Music Co- Curricular Space on RadNet, or by contacting Radford s Music Administrator.
