1 JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE K. Pinto FL 15 SPN 102 ELEMENTARY SPANISH II 4 cr. (4-0) (online) COURSE DESCRIPTION: Different activities and techniques will be used to achieve the course objectives. After taking Spanish 101, the activities will be expanded on more vocabulary, dialogues and conversations. The grammatical structures of the language will be studied on new topics such as preterit and imperfect tenses using different types of exercises. PREREQUISITES: SPN 101 or consent of instructor COURSE OBJECTIVES: This online course is designed to assist second semester students of foreign language to acquire the basic skills needed to understand, speak, read and write elementary Spanish. They should gain insight into the various cultures of Spanish speaking people, and, in so doing, improve their understanding of their own culture. We expect that the average student will achieve the following goals at the end of the academic year: 1. Recognize and pronounce all of the sounds of Spanish with sufficient accuracy to be understood by the native speaker of the language. 2. Express ideas using simple sentences and the vocabulary covered in the text. 3. Use intelligent guessing techniques on new vocabulary items based on context and comprehension of ideas within the framework of the vocabulary and grammatical structures covered in the text. 4. Use written, aural and spoken communication in the present and past tenses. 5. Demonstrate elementary knowledge of important aspects of culture in the Spanish-speaking world, such as: geography, climate, family and student life, informal and formal social settings, greetings and farewells, and survival-level skills associated with daily and student life, and travel.

2 COURSE OUTLINE: The following topics are to be covered during the instructional process: 1. Grammar including: gender and plurals of nouns; subject pronouns; the three verb groups; regular, irregular and stem-changing present tense, preterit, and imperfect tense conjugations; present perfect conjugations; present tense subjunctive mood conjugations; polite command forms; article, adjective, and noun agreement; near future tense; double object pronouns; reflexive pronouns; prepositions; numbers; and pertinent themed vocabulary 2. Listening to native and non-native speakers 3. Reading elementary text passages and writing short paragraphs 4. Conversation at a basic (survival-level) social skill 5. Culture, history and geography of Spanish-speaking countries Lección 7: Aug. 19 Sep. 5 Lección 8: Sep. 6 Sep. 19 Lección 9: Sep. 20 Oct. 10 Lección 10: Oct. 11 Nov. 7 (Oct. 14 Oct. 16 *Mid-term exam) Lección 11: Nov. 8 Dec. 5 Oral exam: Dec. 7 Dec. 10 Final exam: Dec COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 2 On learning a foreign language: Learning any foreign language is a long-term, cumulative, and very proactive endeavor. Acquiring new words, making them a permanent part of your vocabulary, perfecting enunciation, and gaining confidence are integral parts of the process. Students must set aside and spend time outside of the classroom practicing their newly acquired target-language skills, either alone, with fellow students, or with native speakers. Failure to do so will have a snowballing effect and may result in failing the course. Consider vocabulary practice to be a standing homework obligation. Online students must be extra diligent, keeping themselves accountable for memorizing vocabulary, achieving an understanding of the grammar points and reading the textbook. Online students (especially!) should avail themselves frequently of the videos and listening/speaking links provided by the instructor. (Seek help if needed!) Content: Students will read text pages covering vocabulary, grammar and cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries/life and watch accompanying videos, electronically submit written assignments, and write posts in the discussion forums. There will be one online, timed quiz given at the end of each chapter. This course requires three on-campus visits: 1- the mid-term exam, 2- the final exam, and 3- a (5-7 minutes) interview/oral exam with the instructor. Dates will be provided for these on the D2L class site.

3 3 The mid-term and final exams will be given in the Learning Lab in C227. The exams will be prepared by the instructor using the same kind of exercises as found in the text. An ID with a photo will be required when taking the exams in the Learning Lab. Assignments will be posted on the D2L class site and should be submitted by the student as a Microsoft Word document (doc or pdf), using the specific link provided. Weekly activities: Each week online students will do the following: 1. logon to the course site several times per week. 2. click and read each topic in the current week s module. 3. read the assigned pages in the textbook. 4. complete and electronically submit the assignment(s) and/or do the chapter quiz assigned for the week on time! 5. write a brief forum post either asking a question or simply checking in with the instructor and fellow cyber-classmates in each new forum 6. logon and actively work at least one hour at the lab site (Tell Me More) weekly. Online students are encouraged to keep in frequent contact with their instructor via AND to post comments and questions frequently in the current (chapter) forum at the D2L class site. Late work: Assignments should be done in good faith and uploaded on or before the due dates specified. Late work will be penalized by a 50% reduction in assignment points. Assignments submitted more than 7 days after the due date will receive zero (0) points. As the case with on-campus classes, students must also take quizzes and exams within the specified times or risk losing those points. Warning: The instructor has access to the student s D2L activity and can verify each time the student has logged onto the D2L class-site and when links have or have not been clicked. In addition, due to the cumulative nature of foreign language study, vocabulary from past chapters will be considered fair game on exams. Lab: The lab portion is REQUIRED of this course and will be completed via an online website (Tell Me More) at home and/or in Communications and Foreign Language Lab B209. Students will earn points based on a schedule and criteria to be given in class (see instructions sheet). An overall correctness and completeness rate of 75% or higher on all sets of exercises is required. Also, students must complete a Placement test at the beginning of the semester and show an improved Achievement Score of at least 2.5 by the end of the semester.

Sunday, Dec. 11 pm (Click My Summary to check Time Worked) 4 Extra credit opportunity: Students may add extra credit points to their accumulated total via the lab website by completing extra hours beyond the required 15 hours of Time Worked. Extra credit points will be awarded at the end of the semester at 2 points per completed hour with 75% or higher completeness and correctness for each exercise set. Warning: Students must complete all regular exams to be eligible for extra credit points. No more than two letter grades (200 points) may be earned. This is not a substitute for failing to complete the assignments, quizzes and exams, and forum participation required of this course. Student Success Center (Room C219). Services available for students include tutoring (both scheduled one-on-one tutoring and walk-in tutoring) and Disability Support Services. Students can drop in during the hours of operation for tutoring in the Math Help Room (C219 and C223) or the Biology Help Room (C243A). To receive one-onone tutoring, students should make a request early in the semester in the Student Success Center. The Student Success Center is also the place to arrange accommodations. John A. Logan College will make reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Contact the coordinator of Disability Support Services, Room C219B, ext. 8516, for more information. The coordinator must determine eligibility and arrange appropriate academic accommodations. However, it is the student s responsibility to register in advance of a school term with Disability Support Services and to turn in a class schedule each term to ensure accommodations are arranged. For assistance with writing assignments in any college courses, students are encouraged to visit the Writing Center in C214. English instructors are available for one-on-one tutoring each semester during hours posted at the center. Financial Aid. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping.

5 5 Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor s , participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course.
