Due to advances in the medical and surgical therapies for patients with Congenital (CHD), children and adolescents with CHD are now living well into adulthood. As a consequence of the longer lifespan of children born with heart defects, the number of adults with CHD in the United States has now surpassed the number of children with these conditions. There are currently well more than 1 million adults with CHD and this prevalence is expected to increase 5% annually. In addition, an important minority of CHD patients are diagnosed for the first time in adulthood often creating diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas that may be difficult to approach. Presentations will be didactic and interactive between faculty and audience, including multidisciplinary lectures and question and answer sessions to examine the progression and treatment of congenital heart disease from adolescence through adulthood. Topics will include heart failure, arrhythmias, pregnancy, and advances in diagnostic and treatment modalities in ACHD. Objective The Symposium objectives are: 1. Identify the increasing prevalence of adults with congenital heart disease and address some of the complications that can result from lifelong congenital heart disease. 2. Consult and coordinate with expert maternal/fetal medicine care for optimization of outcomes for mothers and babies and determining appropriate contraceptive options. 3. Appraise the catheter-based (interventional and electrophysiology) procedures in adults with congenital heart disease, and compare the risks and benefits of each modality and approach. 4. Evaluate the relationship of ACHD patients with heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and pursue advanced treatment options for this patient subset. Upon completion of the CME activity, participants will be able to: 1. Recognize the complexities involved in caring for adults with congenital heart disease, the resources available for consultation, and current treatment options as defined by ACC/AHA guidelines. 2. Address contraceptive management in the female patient with ACHD and to distinguish the unique issues involved in taking care of the pregnant woman with congenital heart disease 3. Understand the unique issues present in patients with ACHD and make informed decisions regarding interventional and electrophysiology procedures as they specifically apply to adult patients with congenital heart disease. 4. Recognize the prevalence and complications related to heart failure and pulmonary hypertension in the ACHD patient and consult with specialists with specific training in ACHD when treating patients in this subset. Target Audience This educational program is designed for physicians, including pediatricians, internists, and pediatric/adult cardiologists, primary care practitioners, nurses, technicians and other health professionals involved in the evaluation, diagnosis and management of patients with ACHD.
