2 9th KY-ACC Annual Meeting Information Program Overview The Kentucky Chapter American College of Cardiology (KY-ACC) annual meeting is an opportunity for cardiovascular healthcare providers in the area to join together for an annual update. The meeting covers topics relevant to many in cardiovascular medicine. For 2013, the meeting will be on Coronary Pathologies: Atherosclerosis and Beyond. Overall Goal Statements 1. To obtain an enhanced understanding of clinical cardiac pathologies. 2. To augment the clinician s ability to utilize modern diagnostic techniques to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease. Learning Objectives At the end of the meeting all attendants should be able to: Enhance understanding of adult congenital heart disease. Improve ability for rapid assessment of cardiology related images, such as echocardiography, catheterization and MRI. Identify various anatomical anomalies of the coronary arteries. Identify the benefits and limitations of different forms of imaging to make the diagnosis of a coronary anomaly. Provide examples of echocardiographic evaluation of the adult with congenital heart disease after surgical intervention. Demonstrate techniques for optimizing image acquisition in the adult with congenital heart disease. Understand the most common echo findings in ICD. Identify common echo findings in adults. Understand the level of early skepticism in echocardiography and how it was overcome. Understand that atherosclerosis is not due to passive deposition of cholesterol on the artery, but an active inflammatory process that turns against the body defense mechanisms usually used to fight injury or infection. Identify recent insights into the basic mechanisms of inflammation that operate in atherosclerotic plaques. Acquaint with the practical implications of new concepts of coronary thrombosis, the therapeutic goal of plaque stabilization, and new clinical trials targeting inflammation in atherosclerosis. Understand trends in coronary disease outcomes, treatment and compliance in Integrate information and lessons from ACTION-GWTG and other registries into quality improvement efforts. Describe and contrast new antiplatelet agents. Discuss the duration of antiplatelet therapy after ACS and PCI. Understand the value and limitations of stress echo for diagnosing heart disease. Identify the latest innovations in stress testing to maximize the accuracy & clinical value of the test. Increase awareness of major controversies in lipid management. Discuss the latest issues in cardiovascular disease prevention. Demonstrate the methods of plaque molecular imaging with MR imaging, PET and CT. Identify the advantages and limitations of plaque molecular imaging using MR imaging, PET and CT. Target Audience This program is designed for physicians or other practitioners with an emphasis on current practice trends within cardiovascular medicine. Accreditation Statement The Southern Kentucky Area Health Education Center is accredited by the Kentucky Medical Association (KMA) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. The Southern Kentucky Area Health Education Center designates this continuing medical education activity for a maximum of 6.75 credits in AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) CEU credits are also available. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation the educational activity. All persons participating in continuing medical education programs sponsored by the Southern AHEC are expected to disclose any real or perceived conflict of interest related to the content of their presentations. The Southern Kentucky AHEC office of Continuing Medical Education presents this activity for educational purposes only. Participants are expected to use their own expertise and judgment while engaged in the practice of medicine. The content of the presentation is provided solely by presenters who have been selected for presentations because of recognized expertise in the field.
