9 RAF control mode RAF Flot level control Vlve is ctivted by line pressure nd controlled by three-wy flot pilot. The flot is locted inside the reservoir s shown. The verticl wter level chnges re conveyed to the flot. Automtic Opertion: When the wter level reduces the flot slides down on the rod due to its weight. When it reches the minimum preset level indicted by the lower stopper ttched to the Pilot s rod, the pilot s vent port is connected to the control chmber of the RAF. The diphrgm of the RAF is forced upwrds by line pressure, the RAF opens nd reservoir is filled. When wter level rises, the flot slides upwrds on the rod. The vlve in this cse will remin open until mximum preset level (upper stopper) is reched. At mximum level the flot forces upper stopper up. The control cmber is connected then through the pilot to pressure supply. The line pressure forces the RAF diphrgm downwrd nd the vlve closes, cutting wter supply to the reservoir. 32 RAF GENERAL PURPOSE HYDRAULIC VALVES RAF Surge Anticipting Control Vlve Description RAF is djusted to eliminte hzrdous pressure surges typicl of wter hmmer conditions. A wter hmmer is cused by n brupt shutoff of pump or rpid closure of min vlve, cusing fst propgtion of low-pressure front, followed by n extremely highpressure bck-wve. A series of pressure wves, ech one composed of lternting low nd high pressure is creted within few seconds. RAF is piloted hydrulic vlve ctivted by line pressure. The vlve hs two pilots, for high nd low pressure. Under norml conditions the RAF is closed. It opens when the line pressure drops below preset pressure, in nticiption to the following surge, nd remins open until the fluctutions subside. Typicl Appliction RAF is locted next to booster pump to protect the supply line downstrem of the pump from wter hmmer dmges. Use surge-nticipting vlve to protect wter lines ginst wter hmmer dmges. Uphill supply lines of considerble length nd lrge dimeter pipes re more susceptible to wter hmmer dmges. For more info or hzrd nlysis of prticulr network consult Rphel Engineers. Normlly, line pressure is higher thn the set point of the low-pressure pilot (the left one), but lower thn tht of the high-pressure pilot (the right one). Thus, ports in both pilots re closed. There is no flow from the min line to the pilots. MAIN LINE The RAF control chmber is connected directly to the line pressure through needle vlve. The RAF is closed. When line pressure drops below the lower set point, the spring of the low-pressure pilot (left) push the pilot s membrne downwrd nd on the wy opens port, s shown in the drwing. The right pilot does not chnge. The RAF control chmber drins out through port -Vent b of the left pilot. The RAF opens in nticiption to surge.
