Refreshes the desktop or the currently ctive window. Enbles/disbles the touch pd. : : Enbles/disbles Airplne mode. Displys ll currently ctive pps. Turns on/off the bcklight of the LCD screen. To use this function, press nd hold Fn ; then press one of the function keys b. b The following describes the fetures of ech function key. Fn + Home: Activtes the puse function. Fn + End: Fn + PgUp: Fn + PgDn: Activtes the brek function. Enbles/disbles the scroll lock. Activtes the system request. 5

11 Chpter 1. Getting to know your computer Connecting USB devices You cn connect USB device to your computer by inserting its USB plug (Type A) into the USB port on your computer. The first time you plug USB device into prticulr USB port on your computer, Windows utomticlly instlls driver for tht device. After the driver is instlled, you cn disconnect nd reconnect the device without performing ny dditionl steps. Note: Typiclly, Windows detects new device fter connecting it, nd then instlls the driver utomticlly. However, some devices my require you to instll the driver before connecting. Check the documenttion provided by the device s mnufcturer before connecting the device. Before disconnecting USB storge device, mke sure your computer hs finished trnsferring dt by tht device. Click the Sfely Remove Hrdwre nd Eject Medi icon in the notifiction re of the Windows desktop screen to remove the device before disconnecting. Notes: If your USB device uses power cord, connect the device to power source before connecting it. Otherwise, the device my not be recognized. When in sleep mode, you cn only use keybord insted of mouse to wke up the computer. 7

Getting to know your computer Connecting Bluetooth device If your computer hs n integrted Bluetooth dpter crd, it cn connect to nd trnsfer dt wirelessly to/from other Bluetooth enbled devices, such s notebook computers, PDAs nd cell phones. You cn trnsfer dt between these devices up to 10 meters rnge in open spce. Note: The ctul mximum rnge my vry due to interference nd trnsmission brriers. For best trnsfer speed, plce the device s ner your computer s possible. Enbling Bluetooth nd WLAN communictions on your computer Press to mke configurtion. Notes: When you do not need to use the Bluetooth function, turn it off to sve bttery power. You need to pir the Bluetooth enbled device with your computer before you cn trnsfer dt between them. Red the documenttion supplied with the Bluetooth enbled device for detils on how to pir the device with your computer. 8

Fst blinking mber There is problem with the bttery or the bttery connection. Slow blinking mber The bttery is being chrged. When bttery chrge reches 20%, the blinking color chnges to white. Slow blinking white The bttery hs between 20% nd 80% chrge nd is still chrging. When the bttery reches 80% chrge, the light will stop blinking, but chrging will continue until the bttery is fully chrged. 10

Getting to know your computer Using memory crds (not supplied) Your computer supports the following types of memory crd: Secure Digitl (SD) crd MultiMediCrd (MMC) Notes: Insert only one crd in the slot t time. This crd reder does not support SDIO devices (e.g., SDIO Bluetooth, etc.). Inserting memory crd Slide the memory crd in until it clicks into plce. Removing memory crd 1 Push the memory crd in until you her click. 2 Gently pull the memory crd out of the memory crd slot. Note: Before removing the memory crd, disble it through Sfely Remove Hrdwre nd Eject Medi to void dt corruption. 11

The spring-loded bttery ltch keeps the bttery pck secured in plce. Allow ir to enter the computer for cooling. 12

17 Chpter 2. Strting to use Windows 8 Configuring the operting system for the first time You my need to configure the operting system when it is first used. The configurtion process my include the procedures below: Accepting the end user license greement Configuring the Internet connection Registering the operting system Creting user ccount Operting system interfces Windows 8 comes with two min user interfces: the Strt screen nd the Windows desktop. To switch from the Strt screen to the Windows desktop, do one of the following: Select the Windows desktop tile on the Strt screen. Press the Windows key + D. To switch from the desktop to the Strt screen, do one of the following: Select Strt from the chrms br. Move the cursor to the lower-left corner, nd then select the Strt screen thumbnil when it is displyed. Strt screen Desktop 13

18 Chpter 2. Strting to use Windows 8 The chrms Chrms re nvigtion buttons tht let you ccess bsic tsks quickly. Chrms include: Serch, Shre, Strt, Devices, nd Settings. The chrms br is the menu tht contins the chrms. To disply the chrms br, do one of the following: Move the cursor to the upper-right or lower-right corner until the chrms br is displyed. Press Windows key + C. Serch chrm The Serch chrm is powerful new wy to find wht you re looking for, including pps, settings nd files. 14

19 Chpter 2. Strting to use Windows 8 Shre chrm The Shre chrm lets you send links, photos, nd more to your friends nd socil networks without leving the pp you re in. Strt chrm The Strt chrm is fst wy to go to the Strt screen. Devices chrm The Devices chrm llows you to connect or send files to ny externl devices, including digitl cmers, TVs, or printers. Settings chrm The Settings chrm lets you perform bsic tsks, such s setting the volume or shutting down the computer. Also, you cn get to the Control Pnel through the Settings chrm when on the Desktop screen. 15

20 Chpter 2. Strting to use Windows 8 Putting the computer to sleep or shutting it down When you hve finished working with your computer, you cn put it to sleep or shut it down. Putting your computer to sleep If you will be wy from your computer for only short time, put the computer to sleep. When the computer is in sleep mode, you cn quickly wke it to resume use, bypssing the strtup process. To put the computer to sleep, do one of the following: Close the disply pnel. Press the power button. Open the chrms, nd then select Settings Power Sleep. Note: Wit until the power indictor light strts blinking (indicting tht the computer is in sleep mode) before you move your computer. Moving your computer while the hrd disk is spinning cn dmge the hrd disk, cusing loss of dt. To wke the computer, do one of the following: Press ny key on the keybord. Note: If the computer does not wken fter pressing key on the keybord, this mens tht the computer hs entered n enhnced power-sving mode. Press the power button. 16

21 Chpter 2. Strting to use Windows 8 Shutting down the computer If you re not going to use your computer for long time, shut it down. To shut down your computer: 1 Open the chrms, select Settings. 2 Select Power Shut down. 17

22 Chpter 2. Strting to use Windows 8 Connecting to wireless network Enbling wireless connection To enble wireless functions, do one of the following: Press to disble irplne mode. Open the chrms nd select Settings to open the network configurtion pge. Then toggle the irplne mode switch to off. Connecting to wireless network After wireless hs been enbled, the computer will utomticlly scn for vilble wireless networks nd disply them in the wireless network list. To connect to wireless network, click the network nme in the list, nd then click Connect. Note: Some networks require network security key or pssphrse for connection. To connect to one of those networks, sk the network dministrtor or the Internet service provider (ISP) for the security key or pssphrse. 18

To open the Windows Help nd Support file, do one of the following: Select Settings chrm, then select Help. Press Windows key + Fn + F1. You cn red the Windows Help nd Support file on your computer. You cn lso get online help nd support by clicking on one of the two links listed under More to explore. 19

24 Chpter 3. Lenovo OneKey Recovery system The Lenovo OneKey Recovery system is softwre designed to bck up nd restore your computer. You cn use it to restore the system prtition to its originl sttus in cse of system filure. You cn lso crete user bckups for esy restortion s required. Notes: If your computer is preinstlled with GNU/Linux operting system, OneKey Recovery system is not vilble. To utilize the fetures of the OneKey Recovery system, your hrd disk lredy includes hidden prtition by defult to store the system imge file nd the OneKey Recovery system progrm files. This defult prtition is hidden for security resons, which explins why the vilble disk spce is less thn the stted cpcity. Bcking up the system prtition You cn bck up the system prtition to n imge file. To bck up the system prtition: 1 Press the Novo button, then click OneKey Recovery to strt the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system. 2 Click System Bckup. 3 Select bck-up loction nd click Next to strt the bckup. Notes: You cn choose bck-up loction on the locl hrd disk drive or n externl storge device. The bck-up process my tke while. The bck-up process is only vilble when Windows cn be strted normlly. Restoring You cn choose to restore the system prtition to its originl sttus or to previously creted bck-up point. To restore the system prtition: 1 Press the Novo button, then click OneKey Recovery to strt the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system. 2 Click System Recovery. The computer will restrt to the recovery environment. 3 Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the system prtition to its originl sttus or to previously creted bck-up point. Notes: The recovery process is irreversible. Mke sure to bck up ny dt you wish to sve on the system prtition before strting the recovery process. The recovery process my tke while. So be sure to connect the AC power dpter to your computer during the recovery process. The bove instructions should be followed when Windows cn be strted normlly. 20

25 Chpter 3. Lenovo OneKey Recovery system If Windows cnnot be strted, then follow the steps below to strt the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system: 1 Shut down the computer. 2 Press the Novo button. From Novo Button Menu, select System recovery nd press Enter. 21

Where cn I find the hrdwre specifictions for my computer? You cn find hrdwre specifiction for your computer from the printed flyers which cme with your computer. Where cn I find wrrnty informtion? For the wrrnty pplicble to your computer, including the wrrnty period nd type of wrrnty service, see the Lenovo limited wrrnty flyer tht cme with your computer. Drivers nd preinstlled softwre Where re the instlltion discs for Lenovo preinstlled softwre (desktop softwre)? Your computer did not come with instlltion discs for Lenovo preinstlled softwre. If you need to reinstll preinstlled softwre, you cn find the instlltion progrm on the D prtition of your hrd disk. If you cnnot find the instlltion progrm there, downlod it from the Lenovo consumer support Web site. Where cn I find drivers for the vrious hrdwre devices of my computer? If your computer is preinstlled with Windows operting system, Lenovo provides drivers for the hrdwre devices tht you need on the D prtition of your hrd disk. You cn lso downlod the ltest device drivers from the Lenovo consumer support Web site. 22

27 Chpter 4. Troubleshooting Lenovo OneKey Recovery system Where re the recovery discs? Your computer did not come with recovery discs. Use the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system if you need to restore the system to its fctory sttus. Wht cn I do if the bck-up process fils? If you cn strt the bckup but it fils during the bck-up process, try the following steps: 1 Close ll open progrms, nd then restrt the bck-up process. 2 Check to see if the destintion medi is dmged. Select nother pth nd then try gin. When do I need to restore the system to its fctory sttus? Use this feture when the operting system fils to strt up. If there is criticl dt on the system prtition, bck it up before strting recovery. BIOS setup utility Wht is the BIOS setup utility? The BIOS setup utility is ROM-bsed softwre. It communictes bsic computer informtion nd provides options for setting boot devices, security, hrdwre mode, nd other preferences. How cn I strt the BIOS setup utility? To strt the BIOS setup utility: 1 Shut down the computer. 2 Press the Novo button nd then select BIOS Setup. How cn I chnge the boot mode? There re two boot modes: UEFI nd Legcy Support. To chnge the boot mode, strt the BIOS setup utility nd set boot mode to UEFI or Legcy Support on the boot menu. 23

28 Chpter 4. Troubleshooting When do I need to chnge the boot mode? The defult boot mode for your computer is UEFI mode. If you need to instll legcy operting system, such s Windows (tht is, ny operting system before Windows 8), Linux or Dos, etc on your computer, you must chnge the boot mode to Legcy Support. The legcy operting system, such s Windows, Linux or Dos, etc cnnot be instlled if you don't chnge the boot mode. Getting help How cn I contct the customer support center? See Chpter 3. 29 Chpter 4. Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Disply problems When I turn on the computer, nothing ppers on the screen. When I turn on the computer, only white cursor ppers on blnk screen. My screen goes blnk while the computer is on. If the screen is blnk, mke sure tht: - The bttery is instlled correctly. - The AC power dpter is connected to the computer, nd the power cord is plugged into working electricl outlet. - The computer power is on. (Press the power button gin for confirmtion.) If these items re properly set, nd the screen remins blnk, hve the computer serviced. Restore bcked-up files to your Windows environment or the entire contents of your hrd disk to its originl fctory contents using the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system. If you still see only the cursor on the screen, hve the computer serviced. Your screen sver or power mngement my be enbled. Do one of the following to exit from the screen sver or to resume from sleep mode: -Touch the touch pd. - Press ny key on the keybord. - Press the power button. - Press F9 ( ) to confirm whether the bcklight for the LCD screen hs been turned off. 25

30 Chpter 4. Troubleshooting BIOS pssword problems I forgot my pssword. If you forget your user pssword, you must sk the system dministrtor to reset your user pssword. If you forget your HDD pssword, Lenovo uthorized servicer cnnot reset your pssword or recover dt from the hrd disk. You must tke your computer to Lenovo uthorized servicer or mrketing representtive to hve the hrd disk drive replced. Proof of purchse is required, nd fee will be chrged for prts nd service. If you forget your dministrtor pssword, Lenovo uthorized servicer cnnot reset your pssword. You must tke your computer to Lenovo uthorized servicer or mrketing representtive to hve the system bord replced. Proof of purchse is required, nd fee will be chrged for prts nd service. Sleep problems The criticl low-bttery error messge ppers, nd the computer immeditely turns off. The computer enters sleep mode immeditely fter Power-on self-test (POST). The bttery power is getting low. Connect the AC power dpter to the computer, or replce the bttery with fully chrged one. Mke sure tht: - The bttery is chrged. - The operting temperture is within the cceptble rnge. See Chpter 2. Use nd cre Informtion of Lenovo Sfety nd Generl Informtion Guide. Note: If the bttery is chrged nd the temperture is within rnge, hve the computer serviced. 26

31 Chpter 4. Troubleshooting The computer does not return from sleep mode, nd the computer does not work. If your computer is in sleep mode, connect the AC power dpter to the computer nd then press ny key or the power button. If the system still does not return from sleep mode, stops responding, or cnnot be turned off, reset the computer. Unsved dt my be lost. To reset the computer, press nd hold the power button for 4 seconds or more. If the computer is still not reset, remove the bttery pck nd the AC power dpter. Disply pnel problems The screen is blnk. Do the following: - If you re using the AC power dpter or the bttery, nd the bttery sttus indictor is on, press F12 ( ) to mke the screen brighter. - If the power indictor is blinking, press the power button to resume from sleep mode. - If the problem persists, follow the solution in the next problem The screen is unredble or distorted. - Press F9 ( ) to confirm whether the bcklight for the LCD screen hs been turned off. The screen is unredble or distorted. Incorrect chrcters pper on the screen. Mke sure tht: - The disply device driver is instlled correctly. - The screen resolution nd color qulity re correctly set. - The monitor type is correct. Are the operting system or progrms instlled correctly? If they re instlled nd configured correctly, hve the computer serviced. 27

32 Chpter 4. Troubleshooting Sound problems No sound cn be herd from the speker even when the volume is turned up. Bttery problems Your computer shuts down before the bttery sttus indictor shows empty. -or- Your computer opertes fter the bttery sttus indictor shows empty. The computer does not operte with fully chrged bttery. A hrd disk drive problem The hrd disk drive does not work. OneKey Recovery system problems Mke sure tht: - The Mute function is off. - The combo udio jck is not used. - The speker is selected s the plybck device. Dischrge nd rechrge the bttery. The surge protector in the bttery might be ctive. Turn off the computer for one minute to reset the protector; then turn on the computer gin. Mke sure tht the hrd disk drive is included in the Boot menu in the BIOS setup utility correctly. Bckup cnnot be mde. You re not currently using Windows operting system. There is not enough spce to store the bcked up dt. You will need to free more hrd disk spce on your bckup prtition. Filure to restore the system prtition to its fctory defult. The system prtition, such s the prtition size or the drive cpcity hs been modified. 28

33 Chpter 4. Troubleshooting Other problems Your computer does not respond. The computer does not strt from device you wnt. The connected externl device does not work. To turn off your computer, press nd hold the power button for 4 seconds or more. If the computer still does not respond, remove the bttery pck nd the AC power dpter. Your computer might lock when it enters sleep mode during communiction opertion. Disble the sleep timer when you re working on the network. See the Boot menu of the BIOS setup utility. Mke sure tht the BIOS setup utility is set so tht the computer strts from the device you wnt. Also mke sure tht the device from which the computer strts is enbled. Mke sure tht the device is included in the Boot menu in the BIOS setup utility correctly. While turned off, press the Novo button to select the device you wnt the computer to strt from. Do not connect or disconnect ny externl device cbles other thn USB while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might dmge your computer. When using high power consumption externl device such s n externl USB opticl disk drive, use n externl device power dpter. Otherwise, the device my not be recognized, or system shut down my result. 29

34 Appendix. CRU instructions Note:Mke sure the bttery hs been removed before replcing ny devices. Replcing the bttery Note:Use only the bttery provided by Lenovo. Any other bttery could ignite or explode. To replce the bttery, do the following: 1 Turn off the computer. Disconnect the AC power dpter nd ll cbles from the computer. 2 Close the computer disply, nd turn the computer over. 3 Unlock the mnul bttery ltch. Hold the spring-loded bttery ltch in the unlocked position b, remove the bttery pck in the direction shown by the rrow c. c b 4 Instll fully chrged bttery. 5 Slide the mnul bttery ltch to the locked position. 6 Turn the computer over gin. 7 Connect the AC power dpter nd the cbles to the computer. 30

35 Appendix. CRU instructions Replcing the bckup bttery To replce the bckup bttery, do the following: 1 Turn off the computer. Disconnect the AC power dpter nd ll cbles from the computer. 2 Close the computer disply, nd then turn the computer over. 3 Remove the bttery pck. 4 Remove the Hrd disk drive/memory/mini PCI Express Crd slot comprtment cover..loosen the screws tht secure the comprtment cover. b.remove the comprtment cover b. b 31

37 Appendix. CRU instructions Replcing the hrd disk drive You cn increse the storge cpcity of your computer by replcing the hrd disk drive with one of greter cpcity. The connectors nd by of the hrd disk drive were not designed for frequent chnges, or drive swpping. The preinstlled softwre is not included on n optionl hrd disk drive. Hndling hrd disk drive Do not drop the drive or subject it to physicl shocks. Put the drive on mteril, such s soft cloth, tht bsorbs the physicl shock. Do not pply pressure to the cover of the drive. Do not touch the connector. The hrd disk drive is very sensitive. Incorrect hndling my cuse dmge nd permnent loss of dt on it. CRU instructions Replcing memory You cn increse the mount of memory in your computer by instlling double-dt-rte three low voltge synchronous dynmic rndom ccess memory (DDR3L SDRAM)-vilble s n option-in the memory slot of your computer. DDR3L SDRAMs re vilble in vrious cpcities. Note: Use only the memory types supported by your computer. If you incorrectly instll optionl memory, or instll n unsupported memory type, wrning beep will sound when you try to strt the computer. To instll DDR3L SDRAM, do the following: 1 Touch metl tble or grounded metl object to reduce ny sttic electricity in your body, which could dmge the DDR3L SDRAM. Do not touch the contct edge of the DDR3L SDRAM. 2 Turn off the computer. CRU instructions 6 If two DDR3L SDRAMs re lredy instlled in the memory slot, remove one of them to mke room for the new one by pressing out on the ltches on both edges of the socket t the sme time. Be sure to sve the old DDR3L SDRAM for future use. b 7 Align the notch of the DDR3L SDRAM with the protrusion of the socket nd gently insert the DDR3L SDRAM into the socket t ngle. 8 Push the DDR3L SDRAM inwrd towrd the socket until the ltches on both edges of the socket re pushed into the closed position. b 9 After ligning the ttchment clips with their mtching gps, reinstll the comprtment cover. 0 Reinstll nd tighten the screws. A Reinstll the bttery. B Turn the computer over gin. C Connect the AC power dpter nd the cbles to the computer. 38
