OUR FEATURED PROGRAM: ADAPT Operated on the Cambodia and China borders of Viet Nam, ADAPT employs a multi-pronged, grassroots approach to prevent trafficking and assists victims in their quest to reintegrate. ADAPT provides prevention services, shelter and reintegration services and builds community awareness. Since 2005, ADAPT has provided assistance to more than 8,000 young women and their community and family members. 5 What ADAPT Who 1. Prevention Services Academic Scholarships are provided until high school graduation. Scholarships cover tuition, health insurance, uniforms, books and school supplies, tutoring, and summer program. Vocational training scholarships: Recipients are enrolled in a 6-month culinary arts program, receiving a secondary vocational certification upon completion. Job Placement & Individual Development Accounts (IDA): To encourage fiscal responsibility, ADAPT provides partial matching for savings, income supplements and rent subsidies during the initial transition period into the work force. 2. Protection Services Safe Shelters: ADAPT operates two shelters for trafficking survivors at the Vietnam-Cambodia border and at the Vietnam-China border to provide a supportive, safe environment for survivors. Reintegration Services: ADAPT offers comprehensive reintegration services individualized to each trafficking survivor. The services include individualized case management, emotional support, access to healthcare and legal services, vocational training of their choice, remedial education if needed, job placement assistance and family assistance. 3. Partnerships Partnering with local and international organizations and local governments to strengthen referral and reintegration services for trafficking survivors. Engaging teachers and school offi cials to increase awareness about human trafficking and minimize dropout rates. Social Work Summer Institute training: Since 2006, the annual trainings foster skills and cooperation for hundreds of social work practitioners. ADAPT leads the counter-trafficking efforts at the frontiers of Vietnam by providing shelter and reintegration services, increasing access to education. and enabling better economic opportunities. ADAPT operates at the Vietnamese borders with Cambodia and China where over 70% of trafficking cases in Vietnam occur. In these impoverished and remote border regions, young girls and women face the highest risk of being trafficked for sexual and labor exploitation. Why The 2010 US Trafficking-in-Persons Report identifies Vietnam as a source and destination country for human trafficking. The chance of becoming enslaved in the modern world is 1.8 per 1,000 people and almost twice as much in the Asia Pacific region. By 2009, more than 4,400 Vietnamese women and children have been identified as trafficking survivors; 22,000 are reported missing and perhaps trafficked inside Vietnam or across borders; thousands more have been subjected to forced labor and forced prostitution through internationally brokered marriages. ADAPT serves young girls and women from populations most vulnerable to human trafficking at Vietnam s borders with Cambodia and China: Young girls (Academic Scholarship program). Young women from 17 until 25 (Vocational Scholarship and Job Placement program). Returning trafficking survivors (Protection services) Those most at risk come from poor families with: Women as the head of household Women as the main wage earners Multiple daughters in the high risk age group (12-25) Family members who are handicapped or have long-term illness How ADAPT seeks to empower young girls and women by increasing their access to education, to safer and better economic opportunities. We provide each recipient with comprehensive and individualized assistance. We work closely with our recipients respective families and communities to strengthen support for the young women. A program manager with a large U.S. funding organization said [PALS] staff know each family personally, look after them like a set of den mothers and give them a level of attention and commitment I have not seen in my ten years working in international development.
