Lwer temperatures make the prblem wrse. - Advice frm the Canadian gvernment n hw t shvel safely: Warm up befre shveling D nt have a big meal r drink alchl immediately prir t shveling Use a smaller shvel s yu re nt trying t lift huge amunts f snw all at nce Take frequent breaks

Snw Shveling - Reacting t Prblems Raina Lewis, City f Pittsburgh Bureau f EMS - Pittsburgh EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Prir t 1967, plice fficers wuld pick up patients and take them t the hspital Currently a City f Pittsburgh prgram that wrks under UPMC Presby Becming a paramedic takes 2 years f training, similar t a nursing prgram There are ver 150 paramedics, with 13 medic units in Pittsburgh (cuts back t 11 units during the night), 2 rescue trucks and a river rescue truck - CPR classes Able t prvide a 2-hur class t a grup f 5 r mre PBO t cnsider having a CPR class fr residents interested in being trained - Envelpe f Life Standardized frm that prvides life-saving infrmatin t emergency persnnel in an emergency Cmpleted frm shuld be placed n the refrigeratr fr EMS t easily lcate Can print frm frm website, r call Pittsburgh EMS Headquarters at t request ne t be mailed, r can pick up at any EMS statin - Other prgrams Health screenings, CPR/AED training, car seat safety checks and mre. Pieces f apparatus fr "shw and tell" events at lcal neighbrhd gatherings, schls and By Scut camps Car seats if yu can t affrd ne - Regarding snw shveling: Make sure t shvel snw as it accumulates rather than wait till there s mre snw and the jb is mre strenuus Snw Angels - Jamisn Cmbs, Prgram Supprt Crdinatr - Started by City f Pittsburgh in respnse t snwmageddn in 2010 & funded thrugh United Way - Pairs vlunteers with elderly r disabled residents t assist with snw remval but cannt guarantee a match; nly had 200 vlunteers in 2014 t cver all f Allegheny Cunty, which is nt enugh - Help available t any Allegheny Cunty resident with a disability r wh is 60 years r lder and lacks alternative snw remval resurces - Vlunteering: pen t anyne wh is able-bdied; yungest s far has been ~12 yrs. ld - T vlunteer r t receive assistance: Call Visit manager@alleghenysnwangels.rg - Vlunteers must als: Participate in nline rientatin Sign a release Get a criminal backgrund check

4 Reprt hurs spent vlunteering (can be dne via an nline frm) - T get the wrd ut abut prgram: Snw Angels can prvide dr hangers r can give PBO a flyer t put n website t print and put n senirs drs Street & Sidewalk Snw Remval - Mike Gable, Directr f Public Wrks - Mr. Gable started as directr in January 2014; first 3 mnths were a test due t a lt f snw (68" instead f usual 46") and insufficient salt strage - Cntrary t what the news bradcasted, the city was nt ut f salt in winter - Has implemented new effrts: Cllabratin with Allegheny C. t stre back-up salt in Blawnx Snw Plw Tracker: Allws staff and public t mnitr current lcatin f plws and see their rute Will be enhanced this winter telling when trucks are actually salting, in rute t designated areas r being refilled Can see if it s a private street - Snw seasn: Ges frm Octber 15 t March 31 with winter shifts in place January & February DPW relies n weather service & Intellicast Snw events vary greatly Supervisrs develp a game plan fr each specific predicted snw event Different salts are used depending n temperature Primary rads are dealt with first, then secndary, and finally tertiary. Gal has been t try t address bth primary and secndary rads at same time. 146 vehicles will be ut fighting snw this cming seasn - Residents are asked nt t call 311 during the snw event until plws have had a chance t get ut there. Allw 24 hurs t see results befre calling (48 if a bigger snw). - Sidewalk snw & ice remval: Municipal cde requires residents t clear their sidewalks within 24 hurs after the snw stps Municipal cde prhibits residents frm shveling snw ut nt the street, as it lessens the impact f plwing and salting. Create piles in yur frnt yard. City will start giving ut warnings t thse wh d nt shvel DPW has 6 inspectrs wh culd be used t cite peple wh dn t shvel Residents shuld call 311 t reprt thse wh d nt shvel their walks Residents are encuraged t help elderly r infirmed neighbrs wh cannt shvel their wn walks - Besides ver 100 miles f streets, DPW is respnsible fr maintenance f steps, city-wned sidewalks, bridge sidewalks, bike lanes & sme state rads - Cmments frm audience: Mary Anne: Cmmunity culd create a list f peple willing t shvel fr pay Jamisn: Nw is the time t set up snw remval fr the winter. Dn t wait until the first snw hits t find resurces. Residents shuld talk t lawn services that als d snw remval; churches and lcal schls might be able t prvide vlunteers wh can help.
