1 GFWC Leadership Educatin and Develpment Seminar (LEADS) Infrmatin fr GFWC State Federatins The GFWC LEADS prgram is intended t identify GFWC members at the grassrts level wh have the ptential and the desire t assume leadership psitins in GFWC beynd their club. Participatin in GFWC LEADS can help these members gain the capabilities, cnfidence and cmmitment necessary t pursue and achieve higher ffice and serve with distinctin. The LEADS prgram is held annually the day befre the fficial pening f the GFWC Internatinal Cnventin. It is a full day f activities, and includes breakfast and lunch. One attendee each year frm each State Federatin is eligible t participate in LEADS. GFWC will cver a prtin f the attendees expenses, including: Rund-trip travel t and frm the GFWC Cnventin city, up t $350 One-half f rm charge fr tw nights at fficial Cnventin htel Breakfast and lunch during the LEADS prgram $10 Gift Certificate (n purchase f $15 r mre) fr the GFWC Annual Cnventin Marketplace State Federatins may cnsider underwriting a prtin f attendee s expenses (i.e., additinal ldging, meals, r Cnventin registratin). LEADS attendees are expected t be respnsible fr a prtin f their expenses as an affirmatin f their persnal cmmitment. LEADS participant is respnsible fr making her wn travel and ldging arrangements. 2 CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPATING IN LEADS It is highly recmmended that each state candidate fr LEADS: Demnstrates leadership capabilities at the club level as an active club president, club fficer, r club prject r cmmittee chairman. Exhibits a cmmitment t Federatin. Exhibits an understanding f the GFWC missin f cmmunity service, illustrated by prgrams and prjects in which she is r has been invlved. Demnstrates leadership skills, including, but nt limited t, rganizatin, respnsibility, trustwrthiness, enthusiasm, and flexibility. Exhibits an interest in and willingness t pursue higher leadership psitins in Federatin. Agrees t share infrmatin gained frm participatin in LEADS with thers in the state. Understands and accepts ptential expenses invlved in participatin. Has nt held elected psitins at r beynd the state level. This criteria is recmmended in rder t encurage ptential leaders at the club level t apply. Has nt attended a previus LEADS prgram. Members are eligible t attend nly nce. APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS Each State Federatin selects ne LEADS attendee annually. Attendees are expected t meet the criteria listed abve. While the final selectin is at the discretin f each State Federatin, the fllwing methd f selectin and standards fr cnsideratin shuld be fllwed. Applicatin State Federatin may distribute Applicatin Frm (See belw) t entire state membership thrugh state cmmunicatin channels, r may slicit nminatins directly frm clubs and districts. All recmmended criteria fr selectin apply t bth the pen applicatin and direct nminatin prcesses. Applicant shuld prvide infrmatin that directly illustrates hw the criteria are being met. Tw letters f recmmendatin r supprt are required, preferably frm GFWC members at bth the club and district r state level. Applicatins shuld be judged n a pint system. Be sure t let applicants knw what the system is in advance. (See belw fr a suggested pint system.) The State Federatin may determine hw many nminatins will be cnsidered frm each club r district. 3 Judging and Selectin A cmmittee r panel f judges shuld make the final selectin f the ne state representative t the LEADS prgram. The panel culd include the state Executive Bard r Cmmittee, r be appinted by the State President and/r Bard. The fllwing cnditins shuld be met in any selectin prcess: Panel shuld include: Junir representative/s, if applicable in yur State Federatin Representatin frm each district State leadership chairman Frmer LEADS participants The applicant s name, address, and club, and any ther identifying persnal infrmatin n the applicatin frm, shuld be cncealed during judging, allwing applicatins t be cnsidered slely n merit. Panel shuld adhere t accepted standards fr selectin, such as the suggested pint system. (See belw.) Panel shuld select ne participant and ne alternate wh can fill in if the participant is unable t attend. It is nt necessary r recmmended t include the criteria fr applying and selecting LEADS candidates in the state bylaws r standing rules. Hwever, the applicatin and selectin prcess shuld be widely publicized, thrughly explained, and freely available t all members f the State Federatin. FOLLOW-UP Applicants wh are nt chsen t participate in the LEADS prgram are excellent candidates fr in-state leadership training pprtunities, such as a mini-leads prgram held at the state cnventin r bard meeting and mdeled n the GFWC prgram. State Federatins might have a state LEADS day at the annual state cnventin. GFWC LEADS graduates are encuraged t participate in state leadership training prgrams and assist the state leadership chairman. State Federatins shuld institute a prcess fr tracking the prgress f their LEADS graduates, including infrmatin n club, district, and state ffices they pursue and attain; hw they share the infrmatin they gained in the LEADS training; and their level f participatin in district and state activities. GFWC Headquarters maintains a list f LEADS graduates as ptential speakers fr the annual prgram.
