2 Welcome to New College Leicester Learning and Sports Village New College Leicester is on a transformational journey in terms of developing specific and measurable outcomes for its learners, the local community, and the people of Leicester City. The college is breaking new ground through the innovative partnerships which it is developing. These are helping to realise the ambition of placing the college at the heart of the community it serves. The current facilities are of the highest quality and are home to well established community focused clubs. The clubs and the facilities are there for the benefit of the community and we hope that the information contained in this booklet will encourage more members of the community to visit the site. New College Leicester is one of the leading educational establishments when it comes to sports development and it is continually striving to enhance the opportunities available for the community. All of the relevant information to enable members of the community to lead an active and healthy lifestyle and to enable all individuals to reach their potential in and through sport is contained in this guide. The college and its partners are extremely committed to keeping alive the legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The colleges Building Schools for the Future Programme is due to be completed in September The new building will provide a new entrance for the school and a central gateway for the community to access all the schools facilities more effectively. Times are changing at New College Leicester and we hope that the community of New Parks and Leicester will join us on what is an extremely exciting journey. 4 Information for Volunteers of Paired Reading at New College Leicester Help us to help our students. Your role as a reading volunteer is to help your Reading Partners enjoy reading and improve their reading ability through whichever way works best for you both. Volunteers spend 1 hour per week (or more if they are able) to support 2 students on a one-to-one basis for 30 minutes each. The students will be identified by the school as being struggling readers and needing extra support. They are mainly from the lower school in year 7 or 8 (11 or 12 year olds). You will have a contact within the school who will be able to support and advise you and answer any questions you may have. Reading sessions will take place in the college library where you will have access to a wide range of materials and have other adults around all of the time. It is important that the reading sessions are fun, not only for the student but also for you! There will be a training opportunity on a Wednesday or Thursday where you will be given all the information you need to support the students in their reading. Can you make a difference to the lives of our young people? If you are interested in joining our growing team or require more information, please contact Allan Dunsmore, Project Development Manager Tuesday to Thursday, telephone Ext Many thanks, we look forward to meeting you at New College Leicester. 04 Community Link

Who are Academic Mentors? Academic Mentors are members of D.M.U. or the community who have volunteered to support a student at New College Leicester on a regular basis. Mentors will be: Good communicators Excellent and active listeners Able to show a sympathetic approach to sensitive issues Able to maintain confidentiality What is Involved?
