INTRODUCTION The Coach Development Framework is relevant to everyone who coaches rugby whether at the participation, pathways or high performance level. The framework aims to clearly articulate the direction and approach for rugby coaching in Australia and will be underpinned by key implementation drivers in order to support the delivery of tailored coaching excellence. A modern, coach development model providing aligned, targeted and accessible development and training programs across all levels of the game. DRIVERS Tailored development programs for specific coaching contexts. Emphasis on How to coach not What to coach. Player centred approach. Range of coach education delivery methods. Facilitating further learning and development opportunities. High standards of educational design, resources and delivery. All ARU coach education and development courses are participation based. On course compentency coaching skills are assessed as part of most framework courses. Key features include knowing participants, workforce, training plans and delivery strategy. Modules within courses are reflective of the National curriculum and represent key coaching principles aligned to the national philosophy. 3

VISION In order to improve the quality and quantity of Australian Rugby Player pathways, the ARU Coaching Pathway Framework aims to provide a clear pathway for coach development and education which supports member unions, clubs and schools in their development, support and identification of coaches. A national Coaching philosophy has been developed that aims to develop coach s skills, knowledge and personal attributes in providing a supportive learning environment for every player at each stage of the development pathway. NATIONAL APPROACH State and Territory Member Unions of the Australian Rugby Union are endorsed to deliver the Kids Coaching Rugby, Smart Rugby, Foundation, Developing, and Advanced courses on behalf of the ARU. Each State union presenter workforce is trained by ARU Coach Development Staff. The Australian Rugby Union is responsible for the delivery of the Performance coach course as well as the elite coach profile program, national coaching conferences, workshops and seminars. Some aspects of these courses may be conducted in conjunction with the Member Organisations. NATIONAL CURRICULUM A clearly defined national curriculum has been implemented for both participation and performance pathways. This curriculum targets areas such as Coaching in Practice, Coaching Process, Behaviours and Skill Attributes, and is underpinned by National Pathway Philosophies. WHO ARE OUR COACHES? All coaches are valued for their potential contribution to developing the game and positive outcomes for players, coaches, parents, officials and administrators. Coaches will be provided with development opportunities and continue to enjoy the quality experiences in an environment that reflects the values of the game. Coaches have a responsibility of developing players across all levels of the game. 4

COACHING FRAMEWORK The ARU Coaching Framework is an important resource that will shape the development of rugby participation and performance at all levels of the game, ensuring the coaching community is engaged, supported and provided with a clear direction across the coaching pathway. 7 COACH DEVELOPMENT MODEL The Coach Development model shows the six entry points that exist across the coach development education pathway. The model is a visual representation of the different player pathways that are unique across the game. Key features in the development of this model is the development of coach education that is player centered, provides diverse learning experiences, and embraces informal learning concepts when embedded in formal learning contexts. The ARU continues to acknowledge that coaches learn in varying contexts. Therefore the Coach Development Model aims to provide this and emphasises the importance of expanding supportive environments in coaching courses to better faciliate and develop coaching knowledge and practice 7

Critical to the model is the interconnection of segments where indviduals may enter or move through and between various stages of their playing life. 8

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT (FTEM MODEL) The ARU Player Development (FTEM model) is essentially integrative and representative of the greater Australian rugby pathway in that it not only focuses on the High Performance pathway but also is inclusive and formally recognises the importance and contribution of Active Lifestyle activities and Recreational Sport. The model acknowledges the critical importance of the acquisition and refinement of fundamental movement skills to lifelong rugby participation and high performance athlete development. 12 LEARNING PATHWAYS The Australia Rugby Union has recently completed a review of the structure, content and delivery of its coach development program. As part of the national review the previous coaching levels one, two, and three have been restructured to provide guidelines for coaches to best decide which coaching pathway is most appropriate and tailored towards individual needs. The ARU Learning Centre is the home of all course registration, online learning opportunities and accreditation records for all rugby participants across the country. The Learning Centre will allow for a coordinated approach to learning which complements the new coach development framework and the ARU s performance pathways for players, coaches and match officials. Coaches can access modern field based practical resources as well as additional material that supports coach education and development. 12

ACCREDITATION & CERTIFICATION ACCREDITATION Accreditation is an important formal learning process. Courses are delivered by member unions who utilise the ARUs curriculum which are registered with the Australian Sports Commission National Coach Accreditation Scheme. Coaches are encouraged to progress through the pathway they are currently coaching and relevant to the level of player development. The Coach Accreditation pathway ensures a national level of compliance and delivery of specific coaching content relevant to the player pathway. RE ACCREDITATION Continual Personal Development (CPD) points system Coaches are encouraged to identify and develop their own personal learning that is targeted and provides continual improvement. This is provided through the ARUs CPD points system and the opportunity for coaches to develop learning through a variety of external partnerships. This can involve practical workshops, mentoring programs, online elearning, coach selfreflection, and a variety of State based programs. More information regarding the ARU s CPD system can be found on the Coach Development website & Learning Centre 13

CONTINUAL PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) Coach accreditation is constructed and takes form of formal learning (ARU & ASC endorsed qualifications), however coach development informal opportunities can include self reflection, CPD workshops, mentoring, conferences, advanced coaching programs, observations and elearning. The ARU and its Member Unions have worked on a new Continual Personal Development (CPD) strategy that is aligned with the reaccreditation process. This strategy allows for individual development which includes the integration of external providers across the pathway. The development of effective coaching practices supports current research of a coaches in developing professional, interpersonal and intrapersonal knowledge. 14

SMART RUGBY In 2016 the ARU will launch a refreshed elearning Smart Rugby module that: Promotes player safety through education, protocols and safe rugby information. Teaches correct technique to improve player standards and safety. Ensures player participation, so that players from all backgrounds, male and female, feel welcomed and enjoy their participation in rugby. Encourages player participation through a safer environment, on and off the field. 15

KEY DELIVERERS OF THE GAME PLAYERS Players are vital to the future growth of rugby in Australia. Smart Rugby s Playing Smart techniques will help reduce the likelihood of injuries to players in tackle contests, scrums and set pieces.
