3 Introduction WASP s Sports Training & Development Day, supported by Rhino will provide you with a varied programme packed with practical and interactive workshops to continue your journey into coaching excellence. The development of news skills, sharing of ideas, techniques and practical solutions are key for any coach, volunteer, club member, activator, student and teacher to develop and deliver high quality sessions to support the improvement of athletes and players at all levels. We are pleased to introduce to you a renowned team of presenters and tutors from across the sporting spectrum whose expertise and knowledge will be sure to both inspire and motivate you. The details in this brochure will provide you with the workshop outline and what you can expect to gain from each of the workshops. 4 Morning workshops SCUK Safeguarding & Protecting Children: Delivered by Joy Retter, SCUK Every child deserves to enjoy their sport. This workshop will raise your awareness of the tell-tale sign of abuse and poor practice, and give you the tools you need to deal with any issues sensitively, appropriately and effectively should the need ever arise in your coaching career. Valid for 3 years Minimum age: 16 Emergency First Response: Delivered by Rik Grover and Jordan Rose, WASP Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR) teaches participants how to respond to life-threatening emergencies. The course focuses on primary care through a combination of knowledge development, skill development and realistic scenario practice to make sure participants have the confidence in their ability to provide care when emergency situations arise. (AED) Defibrillator training is also included. Valid for 2 years Minimum age: 14 SCUK An Introduction the FUNdamentals of Movement: Delivered by Kam Ravel, SCUK A practical workshop that explores the concepts of Agility, Balance and Co-ordination. It will help coaches to observe, analyse and coach good movement patterns within their sessions. Beneficial for all coaches and those who have an understanding of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and the associated player pathway within their sport. By the end of this workshop coaches will be familiar with the fundamental concepts related to agility, balance, co-ordination and speed (the ABC s). 4 SUPPORTING SPORT LOCALLY MORNING WORKSHOPS
5 Multi-Sport Time to Listen: Delivered by Steve Boocock, WASP The NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit has developed Time to Listen (TTL), a training programme specifically for people who have a designated role in safeguarding within a sports setting. This new multi-sport training is delivered by Wiltshire and Swindon Sport and is available to all clubs in the County. TTL is a training course designed to equip designated persons at various levels within sporting organisations to fulfil their safeguarding responsibilities to children. This training is aimed at those who are designated club welfare officers and will cover all the essential elements of undertaking this key role. The training will include; roles and responsibilities of the Club Welfare Officer, core legislation and guidance, supporting your club. National and local roles. Participants should have undertaken either the Sportscoach UK Safeguarding and Protecting Children 1 or Local Authority equivalent awareness training. Sports Nutrition: Delivered by Renee McGregor, Sports Nutritionist and Registered Dietitian A theory based workshop that will include a general introduction to sports nutrition; the importance of tailoring nutritional intake to training needs, hydration, portion sizes and practical applications of the science. The importance of nutrition for the adolescent athlete as well as differences between male and female athletes will also be covered along with a practical element in creating your own recovery meals/drinks. 6 Morning workshops Active Kids for All Inclusive Community Training Programme: Delivered by Ben Humphrey, Swindon Borough Council A practical workshop complemented by elearning that will support you before and after the training. The learning will help improve your knowledge, competence and confidence in delivering sports based activities to disabled people. You will learn about practical tools to support inclusive delivery, explore creative ideas to support disabled people to access physical activity and sport, complete a workbook that will support your activity sessions going forward and learn about local disability sport opportunities for participants, leaders, volunteers and coaches. Football Skills: Delivered by Kirk McGinn, FA Skills Team Leader A practical and theory based workshop that will provide you with information on the following 3 themes: Learning through Games, Youth Development Review and Match Day Support; Learning through Games Understanding how to set up and organise football activity sessions Have an understanding of how to modify practices to manage difference Youth Development Review Outline the changes that the FA have implemented and why Match Day Support Understanding of ways to set up for match days Understanding of how to support the children s learning during a match day Why do you rotate players? 6 SUPPORTING SPORT LOCALLY MORNING WORKSHOPS
7 Cricket for Primary School Teachers: Delivered by Rob Newton, ECB Dorset An ECB Accredited course for teachers only (key stage 2) NB Not a cricket qualification in its own right. A three hour workshop that will help teachers, teaching assistants, higher level teaching assistants and other adults supporting learning within schools understand how cricket can be used to deliver high quality PE and school sport and introduce the power and versatility of the New Howzat! resource. Developed in partnership with Chance to Shine, teachers will develop their knowledge, understanding and application of appropriate games and practices within the national curriculum. The workshop will also explore opportunities to promote intraschool competition within physical education and school sport. Break for lunch A hot lunch will be served in the Atrium Take this opportunity to network with other coaches, WASP staff and the tutors. MORNING WORKSHOPS SUPPORTING SPORT LOCALLY 7

9 Strength & Conditioning: Delivered by Mike Rose, L3 PT & L4 Strength & Conditioning This workshop includes both theory and practical elements and will be a general introduction to training athletes and prescribing programs. The workshop will focus on sport specific training protocols and programmes for various sports. Topics covered will include; Specificity, Aerobic System, Anaerobic System, Training cycles, SAQ, Plyometrics, Core Stability & Flexibility. Sports Psychology for Coaches: Delivered by Abbe Brady, University of Gloucestershire This will be a highly interactive workshop based on contemporary theory and research. Attendees can expect to be engaged in talking about, listening to, having a go and debating about skills and issues in sport psychology. The workshop will include a general introduction to the scope of sport psychology and how it can benefit both performers and coaches. As well as introducing a range of contemporary themes such as resilience, well-being, mental toughness, character strengths and growth mindset, the workshop will review key psychological skills for performance. Practical considerations about applying and integrating sport psychology with athletes at different stages of development will also be covered. AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS SUPPORTING SPORT LOCALLY 9
10 Afternoon workshops England Netball On the Ball: Delivered by Sophie Warner, England Netball This workshop will focus on catching and passing skills and identify how practice design can help players become more skilful in matches. This is a practical workshop that will involve coaches observing and analysing passing and catching technique as well as developing basic practices to enhance the decision making players are required to make in games. At the end of the workshop coaches should have the skills to observe and analyse technique and make corrective measures to improve performance and develop practices that will help players with decision making in game play. Outcomes: By the end of the workshop a coach should be able to: Identify practices to develop ball handling skills Identify and describe correct passing and catching technique Identify the difference between random, variable and blocked skills practices for ball skills. Describe how different practice design influences player development Define the decisions required by players when receiving and passing Identify the physical impact of practices on players Observe skills in action with the aim of detecting strengths and areas for improvement England Athletics - Leading Athletics Award: Delivered by England Athletics Leading Athletics is an exciting new leadership workshop for those looking to lead athletics activities for young athletes. Packed full of useful tips and ideas, this three hour workshop is supported by a Workbook, Support Resource and a series of Game Cards which aid delivery.
