2 The College: An Overview New College, Telford is currently going through an exciting period of change and has clear ambitions and aspirations relating to the development of its curriculum provision. The college provides further education for over 1,400 students, predominantly for full time year old learners studying at advanced levels. It s a vibrant and popular place in which to work and study. The college s mission is: To provide equality of access to the best possible educational opportunities for those aged over 16 whether they are from Telford or further afield. The college corporation is currently in the process of updating its strategic plan, which will aim to build and develop existing systems and core provisions as well as ensuring that we adapt to meet the needs of the local community The college has recently invested in new accommodation and resources, with a new reception, student social areas, performance spaces and teaching and learning areas which opened in September There are additional plans to invest in and upgrade other facilities and learning resources on the current King Street Site on a phased basis. Curriculum Provision The college is a leading provider of intermediate and advanced level courses in Telford and Shropshire. It offers over 70 courses including: AS/A2 courses, Applied A levels, level 3 vocational Diplomas, GCSEs and vocational pathways from level 2 to 3. The college provides a curriculum with opportunities for students across a wide range of abilities and backgrounds. It supports the pursuit of excellence and high achievement for all. Partnerships and Recruitment The college works closely with local schools in Telford & Wrekin, and with other agencies and providers. We have a good reputation for providing impartial advice and guidance to all learners and have Matrix and Investors in Careers accreditation. Full time recruitment has grown in the last 4 years and the college is attracting students from an increasingly diverse range of backgrounds and with varied educational experiences. The college has a good record of working with other 11-16, and post 16 providers and is developing new and successful approaches to partnership working to extend learning opportunities in the local area. It hosts the Key Stage 4 Pupil Referral Unit (King Street PRU) for the Local Authority and has well established and positive relationships with the local community.
3 There are many opportunities to engage with local schools, employers and the wider community in all areas of our work. All teams will make a significant contribution to future developments in this area. Quality of Provision All subject teams, and support teams have responsibility for self-assessment and improvement planning in their areas. There are well established links to the colleges Performance Management scheme and to opportunities for Staff Training and Development. All teams are contributing to a process of continuous improvement, which involves for example sharing good practice. Value added measures were generally satisfactory to good, and college performance is satisfactory overall. There are many examples of good practice and outstanding student achievements. Under the LSC s Framework for Excellence (2010), learner destinations and delivery of the LSC funding contract were judged to be outstanding. Learner views, success rates and financial health were judged to be good. Summary The college is popular and well respected locally and has good student recruitment. It has a good reputation for providing impartial advice and guidance and is committed to providing good student support. It is friendly and welcoming and a rewarding place in which to study and work. There are excellent opportunities for all staff, including new appointees, to make a positive contribution to developments and to influence the future direction of our work.
4 Subject Area: Music A vibrant and popular area which provides a good range of advanced and intermediate level courses across the Music disciplines. The area plays a significant role in college life. Students and staff are regularly involved in representing the college in a large variety of public events through, for example, performances or workshops. The breadth of provision, support for students and practical work in many courses was recognised by Ofsted in the December 2009 Inspection. The Music area offers courses in: AS/A2 Music BTEC Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma in Music Composing & Song writing at Level 3 BTEC Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma in Music Performance at Level 3 BTEC Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma in Music Technology at Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Music Events Support at Level 3 HNC / HND Music Technology Creative Pathways Production, with Dance, Drama, Music options. Extended Certificate(s) at Level 2 The curriculum offer is currently under review and may be subject to change in September The area has access to a range of resources which include two music recording studios and four sound proofed rehearsal rooms, and a full time facilitator is in post to provide appropriate support for learning. We also have the Hayward Arts Centre, a purpose built Theatre with a well equipped lighting, sound and technical rig. The Post The college is seeking to appoint an experienced and talented teacher to join a committed team with a good range of teaching and professional experience. There are opportunities to work with the team to develop external links. You will have successful experience of teaching HND/HNC Music Production to a high standard and there will be the opportunity to contribute to the development and growth of the college s HE provision. In addition there may be the prospect of contributing to the teaching of related music course e.g. A Level Music. You will have a strong commitment to and enjoy working with and enthusing young adult learners.
5 Summary Job Description Purpose To ensure high standards of teaching and effective support for learners, enabling all learners to achieve their learning goals. Main Responsibilities Teaching Planning and developing courses. Producing schemes of work, teaching and learning resources and assessment schemes. Planning and preparing lessons appropriate to the educational needs of students and the requirements of the relevant awarding body. Teaching groups and on a one to one basis as appropriate. Setting, marking and assessing students work and providing associated feedback. Monitoring student attendance and maintaining accurate records, including registers. Monitoring student progress and achievement. Maintaining a thorough and up to date knowledge of your subject and pedagogic knowledge. Developing and organising a range of activities suitable to the requirements of the course and the needs of learners. This post may also require course leadership. Tutorial / Support Contributing to entry guidance and student induction. Acting as a personal tutor. Monitoring student progress and achievement. Attending parents evenings and providing other support and feedback where appropriate. College Wide Responsibilities Attending team meetings, staff meetings and external meetings as required. Participating in college marketing activities. Participation in the operation of the College Quality Assurance Framework and in the associated quality improvement process. Taking part in the college arrangements for individual performance management and review. Contributing to the achievement of college objectives. 7 Details of Appointment Hours of Work This is a full time permanent position. Employment Conditions The college belongs to the Sixth Form Colleges Employers Forum and this post lies within the agreed framework for teaching staff. Salary All appointments will be made on the nationally agreed Sixth Form College pay spine based on qualifications and experience. The salary will be in the range of 21,256-36,279. 8 Summary Terms & Conditions Your Employer The Corporation of New College, Telford is the employer. The Corporation determines the pay and conditions framework, and pays the salary. This is determined within a framework negotiated nationally by the Sixth Form Colleges Forum (SFCF). Working Day (if fractional contract pro-rata) You are required to work 195 days in any year of which 190 will be days on which you may be required to teach in addition to carrying out other duties. Within these 195 days, up to 1265 hours a year will be allocated reasonably to you by the Principal. Details of this directed time will be provided by the Principal. Within the 1265 hours you may be required to teach for up to 6 hours over two evenings per week. Any teaching in the evening beyond this level would be undertaken only on a voluntary basis. In addition to the above requirements you will work such additional hours as may be needed to enable you to discharge your duties effectively including, in particular, the marking of students work, the writing of reports and the preparation of lessons, teaching material and teaching programmes. Appraisal A college Appraisal Scheme is in operation and all staff will have the opportunity to participate in the scheme. In appropriate circumstances, performance standards achieved in other recognised institutions can be transferred. Pension Arrangements Post holders are eligible to join the Teachers Pension Scheme. Information about this scheme and other pension choices will be available upon commencement. Probation Confirmation of appointment will be subject to satisfactory completion of a period of a 12 month probationary service. Trade Union Membership The Corporation, as the employer, supports a system of collective bargaining. You have a right to belong to a trade union of your choice. Staff Development All staff are positively encouraged to take part in professional development.
