1 Glasgow Sport 2014 and beyond Glasgow Sport Coach / Volunteer Development Programmes Glasgow Sports Coach/Volunteer Development Programmes provide the training and support necessary to ensure that outstanding coaches and volunteers are available at all levels within every sports club across the city. Programme participants are encouraged to engage with the process of being the best volunteer they can be, whether coaching at an introduction or performance level or acting within their club committee. Glasgow Sport offers two distinct programmes, the Volunteer Improvement Programme and Excel in Coaching. Both programmes offer development opportunities for new and established volunteers to improve their skills within a number of diverse topics guided by the programme participants. The programmes have been running now for a number of years and the feedback from participants who have engaged within both programmes has been consistently positive. Further information on both programmes and the application form are contained within this booklet.

2 Volunteer Improvement Programme (VIP) VIP is designed to provide committed volunteers with developmental opportunities through monthly team nights and a personalised budget and link officer. The programme exists for anyone over the age of 18 who volunteers on a regular basis and aims to provide them with the right environment to develop. The Volunteer Improvement Programme has delivered 28 workshops to 85 volunteers representing 17 sports since its inception. In , VIP provided tutor led development nights on Sport Psychology, Better Movers and Thinkers and Sports Nutrition amongst others. To compliment these team nights the volunteers have the option of producing a coach action plan with a mentor that identifies their needs and the existing support available. All members of VIP s have access to funding to be used for their own development. Over the past 4 years, VIP s have attended 1300 hours of coach education including UKCC or sport specific awards, conferences and workshops. VIP provides the opportunity for volunteers to share learning with like minded people and has over the past four years helped volunteers into employment and volunteering opportunities at events such as the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games. Most importantly, VIP has supported, and will continue to develop volunteers that are providing activity in our clubs and working with our young people. Excel in Coaching Often coach education focuses on pushing coaches to move up through each coaching level but a large majority of volunteers will never coach at an elite stage. Excel aims to support all coaches at all levels through individual and group learning. Excel in Coaching is an established coach development tool within Glasgow Sport having delivered 30 workshop to 58 coaches since it inception. Coach Development is achieved through assisting coaches with a series of coach development workshops on selected hot topics. Coaches have the option of being assisted to produce a coach action plan. A key part of the programmes was also to fund participants to observe and shadow coaches identified to be displaying outstanding good practice within their particular sport. It has been established that these coaching experiences would broaden the coaching knowledge of Glasgow coaches and lead to informal mentoring opportunities with outstanding coaches across the UK and beyond. To date 17 volunteers have been supported to travel over 42,000 miles across the world over the last three years in pursuit of improving their coaching knowledge. What can I expect from the programmes: A minimum of six free group workshops on identified hot topics of interest to coaches. Financial support to identify coach education courses or coaching experiences. Guidance on producing a Volunteer Action Plan to identify suitable opportunities for development. What do we expect from you? Attendance at all group workshops (minimum of 75% attendance) Sharing of new skills learnt within the programme with other participants Attendance at any promotional events associated with the programme Completion of feedback questionnaire at the end of the programme Who can apply? Volunteer Sports Coaches active within Glasgow Cubs Resident or volunteering in Glasgow 18 years or older VIP Volunteering at a Glasgow Club (Minimum of one hour per week). Actively volunteering for 6 months prior to applying. Excel Established Coaches that have been coaching for a minimum of 3 years.

3 Case Studies Jim Sinclair Glasgow City Basketball Joe Brannan Partick Amateur Boxing Club Jim Sinclair has been part of Glasgow City Basketball since the club started in His current role within the club is to oversee Youth Development. Alongside this; he also coaches the Cadet Squad, the Senior Ladies Squad, is the club treasurer and is involved in the Eastbank Community Sports Hub. Through VIP, Jim was funded to attend the following courses and events: Scottish Sports Development Conference MiDAS certificate First Aid Mentoring your sports coaches VIP has been a very positive experience. I have gained knowledge from professional sports coaches and athletes that I may never have had. I got the chance to attend the Scottish Sports Development Conference and found this a very rewarding experience. It gave me an opportunity to listen to some very positive and inspiring athletes and coaches as well as participating in some good workshops to help my club. I also found it a very good networking experience and made some good contacts for myself and my club. Joe Brannan is the head coach of Partick Amateur Boxing Club which was re established in 2008 with the support of Glasgow Sport. He was supported to attend coach education courses prior to his selection for the Excel in Coaching Programme. This programme supported Joe to travel to Dublin to view the Irish National Boxing Squad. He was able to shadow the renowned boxing coaches Billy Walsh and Zuarti Anita, learning about their coaching techniques and philosophy. Joe said about his funded coaching experience trip, My visit to the National Training Centre in Dublin has inspired me and the new skills and techniques learned on this visit have been introduced to my training sessions. Although in its infancy the club provides the opportunity for young people to compete in boxing and my experiences through Excel have helped boxers competing at local events and our only female member who recently received the opportunity to attend talent ID sessions with Boxing Scotland national coaches.
