1 Advancing Wellness and Independence after Spinal Cord Injury June 6 - June 8, 2014 TIRR Memorial Hermann 1333 Moursund Avenue Houston, TX 77030
2 DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES The purpose of this interdisciplinary conference is to promote best practices for persons with spinal cord injury () throughout the continuum of care and within a variety of practice settings. Spinal cord medicine is a subspecialty for clinicians who practice in neurological and rehabilitation settings. We recognize that this subspecialty optimally requires intentional training and education provided by clinicians who have dedicated themselves to the care of persons with spinal cord injury. Our goal is to provide an evidence-based foundation with practical insights that will enable you to advance wellness and independence for the persons you care for with. This teaching will provide you with a core foundation from which to learn and with information regarding emerging research and advanced technologies. We will cover strategies to implement best practices in a variety of settings; acute care, skilled nursing and long-term acute care, a general rehab unit, a dedicated inpatient program, an outpatient medical clinic and the home health setting. This symposium will span a variety of topics in both lecture and lab format so you may choose the subject content most applicable to your needs. The learner will be able to develop best practices for the safe and effective practice of spinal cord medicine relevant to his or her practice setting. The learner will be able to utilize knowledge gained to respond to primary and secondary sequelae following spinal cord injury. The learner will be able to synthesize knowledge gained to improve a person s level of independence and wellness after spinal cord injury. The learner will be able to appropriately recommend varying levels of care to facilitate streamlined care through the continuum following.
