He is also involved in the use of robotic exoskeletons to facilitate walking, and stem cell implantation for neurological recovery after spinal cord injury. Dr. Escalon is also involved in research related to ICU patients as it relates to their long term function and quality of life.

4 CLINICAL PROFILE Dr. Miguel Escalon came to The Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2013 and has served as Director of Critical Care Rehabilitation since He is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Chicago and his medical degree from University of Illinois. He received specialty training in Rehabilitation Medicine at The Baylor/UT-Houston PM&R Alliance. Dr. Escalon is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and has subspecialty training in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine. Dr. Escalon works closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, recreational therapists, neuropsychologists, and other medical and surgical specialists in order to provide comprehensive care. Dr. Escalon oversees the rehabilitation and mobilization of critically ill patients, especially those patients in the ICU. The scope of ICU practice includes debility, critical illness myopathy/polyneuropathy, pain, spasticity, etc. Dr. Escalon also performs spasticity management (including intrathecal pump management and botox injections) as well as peripheral joint injections for osteoarthritis and trigger point injections. IMPACT Developed an intensive rehabilitation program throughout the intensive care units (ICUs) of Mount Sinai Hospital. Created protocols for physical and occupational therapies as well as developed outcome measures to be followed to monitor patient progress. Continue to coordinate rehabilitation care given to those persons in the ICUs, especially those on the respiratory recovery pathway (ventilated patients). Provide rehabilitation medicine consultation in the intensive care units when needed. Also there is close collaboration with transplant teams to provide targeted care and improved outcomes in this population as well. Have been invited to present on the subject of critical care rehabilitation at the 2016 Association of Academic Physiatrists annual meeting. Reach for teaching continues to grow and in first year as an attending was voted teacher of the year by the residents in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.This reach will continue to broaden as will be taking on more responsibility as the associate residency program director for rehabilitation medicine.
