1 Communication Corner PC Alum Now Teaching at PC Emily Fett knows her way around Presentation College Fairmont Campus. Why? In 2008, Emily graduated with her BSN from PC. As a native from the Fairmont community, this is home to Emily. My family and I relocated to Fairmont this past summer and I was so excited to hear of a teaching opportunity in the nursing department at PC. I am a former graduate of PC and have such fond memories of my time here as a nursing student. I love to help students learn about the world of nursing and am really looking forward to mentoring nursing students in my new role as a faculty member. Inside This Issue Hunger Heroes page 2 Commencement page 3 Financial Aid Visit page 4 Nursing Applications page 5 February 2013 Emily will be teaching Pediatric theory for Maternal-Child Nursing, and clinical for Maternal-Child Nursing and Fundamentals of Nursing and Care of the Older Adult. After graduating from PC, Emily worked as an RN in the Heart Center at Fairview Southdale Hospital for 2 years and has taught at National American University. Currently she is attending graduate school at SDSU in pursuit of a doctorate of nursing practice degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner program. What is the most important thing you want to teach your students? I want my students to learn how to provide quality nursing care that meets the physical, emotional, social, and cultural needs of an individual or family. I want students to remember that every patient deserves to be cared for by a nurse who treats him/her with respect, especially during a time of need. Most of all, I am hopeful that students will feel prepared and excited to enter the nursing profession as a graduate of PC! Guest Speakers page 6 Tubing at Mount Kato page 7 Emily encourages students to stop by and chat as her office door is always open! Welcome Emily!!

6 Community Connects to Presentation College On Tuesday, January 15, the Fairmont Campus junior nursing students had the opportunity to hear local professionals speak on topics related to maternity and pediatric nursing. Siri Heille, a course instructor for NB338 Maternal-Child Health, invited several professionals from the area to share what they do in their occupational roles and how that impacts nursing. We first heard from a married couple who comanage Options Pregnancy Center in Fairmont. Bob and Janet Charnecki are returning speakers, and shared the mission of the Center in supporting women and families who may be dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Finally, Rebecca (Parnell) Boer, MSN, RN, FNP, a nurse practitioner at Dulcimer Medical Center in Fairmont, shared her 7 years of experience as a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Childrens Hospital. Ms. Boer discussed the role of the NICU nurse, caring for the tiniest babies and the medical complications those little patients fight. All of the speakers had wonderful stories and experience and gave students a real sense of what their professional roles entail. Students were rich with questions and very grateful for the experiences to hear from these exemplary citizens, and how their work relates to professional nursing. Jamie Hugoson, BSN, RN, a Presentation College graduate, is a nurse at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont in the Birth Place and is an advocate for breastfeeding. Ms. Hugoson is the primary breastfeeding educator for staff and patients at the hospital and also facilitates a breastfeeding support group. Alexis Cote, BSW, is a social worker with Martin and Faribault Counties Human Services Child Protection division. Ms. Cote shared her role in child protection and child advocacy and explained the obligation that all nurses have as mandatory reporters of abuse. February 2013 Fairmont Campus Newsletter Page 6
