4 How to Become and Stay Certified HR Certification is achieved and maintained by: Meeting work experience requirements (based on your education level) Passing an experience-based exam Staying current in the HR field -- demonstrated through recertification* *60 credit hours of continuing professional development must be earned during every three year cycle

8 How are the exams developed? Teams of certified HR professionals work on each exam. They first receive special item writing training and often spend years developing this skill. Questions are always pre-tested before being used as scored items on the exam. Each question passes three levels of review: o Item Writing/Review before pre-testing o Item Analysis after pre-testing o Forms Review before test administration le style

9 The California Exam (PHR-CA & SPHR-CA) In 2006, SHRM s California State Council asked the Institute to partner with them to create a new exam because: California law typically overrides federal law California regulations are frequently revised California law is often seen as a predictor of future federal employment law changes After researching California HR practice, the new California exam was launched in April s In 2011, the Institute updated the California body of knowledge as required. Exams administered in May 2013 reflected the results of the latest study.
