9 Get Started The fllwing tpics give yu all the infrmatin yu need t set up yur tablet the first time. Yur Tablet at a Glance The fllwing illustratin utlines yur tablet s primary external features and buttns. Set Up Yur Tablet Prir t using the tablet, it is necessary charge the battery. An ptinal micrsd memry card (nt included) can als be installed at this time. Install a Memry Card Use the fllwing prcedure t install an ptinal memry card (nt included) in yur tablet. Fr mre infrmatin, see Memry Card. 1. Open the Memry Card Slt cver and turn t expse the slt. 2. With the gld cntacts facing dwn, carefully slide the memry card int the slt, pushing gently until it clicks int place. Get Started 1

10 3. Replace the Memry Card Slt cver. Imprtant: Yu can easily damage the memry card and card slt by imprper peratin. Please be careful when inserting, remving, r handling it. D nt ver-insert the card as this can damage the cntact pins. Charge the Battery Yu will need t charge the battery befre using yur tablet. 1. Plug the USB cable int the USB Charger/Accessry Prt n the bttm f the tablet. 2. Plug the USB cable int the charging head, and then plug the charging head int an electrical utlet. Turn Yur Tablet On Use the Pwer/Lck Key t turn yur tablet n. Get Started 2

11 Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key t turn the tablet n. If yur tablet is activated, it will turn n, search fr Sprint service, and begin the setup applicatin. If yur tablet is nt yet activated, see Activate Yur Tablet fr mre infrmatin. Activate Yur Tablet Fllw the instructins belw t activate yur tablet if it has nt already been activated. Depending n yur accunt r hw and where yu purchased yur tablet, it may be ready t use r yu may need t activate it n yur Sprint accunt. If yu purchased yur tablet at a Sprint Stre, it is prbably activated and ready t use. If yu received yur tablet in the mail and it is fr a new Sprint accunt r a new line f service, it is designed t activate autmatically. When yu turn the tablet n fr the first time, yu shuld see a Hands Free Activatin screen, which may be fllwed by a PRL Update screen and a Firmware Update screen. Fllw the nscreen instructins t cntinue. If yu received yur tablet in the mail and yu are activating a new tablet fr an existing number n yur accunt, yu can activate n yur cmputer nline r directly n yur tablet. Activate n yur cmputer: G t sprint.cm/activate and cmplete the nline instructins t activate yur tablet. Activate n yur tablet: Turn n yur new tablet. Yur tablet will autmatically attempt Hands-Free Activatin. Tuch Activate t verride aut-activatin and start the manual activatin wizard. Fllw the n-screen prmpts t cmplete the activatin prcess. If yur tablet is still nt activated, visit sprint.cm/supprt fr assistance. If yu d nt have access t the Internet, call Sprint Custmer Service at Tip: D nt press the Pwer buttn while the tablet is being activated. Pressing the Pwer buttn cancels the activatin prcess. Nte: If yu are having any difficulty with activatin, visit sprint.cm/supprt. Cmplete the Setup Screens The setup screens help yu set up certain features and preferences n yur tablet. Once yur tablet has been turned n, yu will see a Welcme message. Yu can then cmplete the setup prcess. Get Started 3

12 Nte: Yu may be able t cmplete the setup screens befre yur tablet has been activated n yur Sprint accunt. Nte: During r after setup, yu may see a Cnnectins Optimizer ntice. Read the ntice and tuch I Agree t allw yur tablet t cnnect autmatically t the best available data netwrk, including Wi-Fi. T turn Cnnectins Optimizer ff at any time, tuch > > Settings > Mre settings > Mbile netwrks > Cnnectins ptimizer and uncheck the bx. 1. Frm the Welcme screen, select a language (if prmpted) and tuch Next t get started. T skip any sectin, tuch Next r Skip. T g back t the previus screen, press the Back key. Nte: On the Welcme screen, there is als an Accessibility buttn. If yu are visually impaired r hard f hearing, tuch Accessibility t change the accessibility settings. Fr mre infrmatin, see Accessibility Settings. 2. Fllw the nscreen instructins t cmplete each sectin. Fr each tpic, yu will have the ptin t skip it and cntinue t the next screen. Wi-Fi If prmpted, fllw the prmpts t sign in t an available Wi-Fi netwrk. Fr secured Wi-Fi netwrks, yu will need t enter a passwrd. See Wi-Fi fr mre details. Gt Ggle? Tuch Yes t sign in t yur current Ggle Accunt, r tuch N and fllw the instructins t set up a new Ggle Accunt. Make it Ggle Tuch Get an accunt and fllw the instructins t create a new Ggle Accunt, r tuch Nt nw. Tuch t learn abut Ggle Accunts. This screen nly displays if yu did nt previusly sign in t yur Ggle Accunt. Backup and Restre Read the backup and restre infrmatin. Then enable either r bth ptins. This screen nly displays if yu previusly signed in t yur Ggle Accunt. Ggle and yur Lcatin Read the infrmatin abut lcatin services. Then enable either r bth lcatin services. This tablet belngs t Enter yur first and last name. This infrmatin is used by the tablet t persnalize certain apps. This screen nly displays if yu did nt previusly sign in t yur Ggle Accunt. Samsung Accunt Tuch Sign in t sign in t yur current Samsung Accunt, r tuch Create new accunt and fllw the instructins t set up a new Samsung Accunt. The fllwing tpics will intrduce the basic functins and features f yur tablet. Yur Tablet s Layut The fllwing illustratin utlines yur tablet s basic layut. Key Functins The fllwing list defines the features listed in the abve illustratins. Light Sensr detects the presence f bjects near the tablet, and light cnditins. Frnt Camera allws yu t take pictures and vides f yurself. Pwer/Lck Key lets yu turn the device n r ff, turn the screen n r ff, r lck the screen. Press and hld fr a Device ptins menu, where yu can turn the tablet ff r restart it, r fr easy access t Airplane mde, and t Mute and Sund mdes. Vlume Key adjusts the vlume f yur tablet s sunds. Frm the Hme screen, press t adjust master vlume. Infrared Transmitter cntrls external devices such as TVs. Back Key lets yu return t the previus screen, r clse a dialg bx, ptins menu, the Ntificatins panel, r n-screen keybard. Tablet Basics 6

15 Speaker plays ntificatin tnes and sunds. Hme Key returns yu t the Hme screen. Press and hld t see recent apps, and access Task Manager and Ggle Nw. Menu Key allws yu t access a menu frm mst f yur tablet s screens. Display prvides a tuch-sensitive interactive surface fr yur tablet. Camera lets yu take pictures and recrd vides. 3.5 mm Headset Jack allws yu t plug in an ptinal headset. Memry Card Slt allws yu t install an ptinal micrsd card (nt included) t add additinal strage t yur tablet. SIM Card Slt stres the SIM Card. CAUTION! The SIM Card shuld never be remved unless yu are instructed t remve it by authrized service persnnel. USB Charger/Accessry Prt allws yu t cnnect the charger/usb cable (included) and ther ptinal accessries (nt included). CAUTION! Inserting an accessry int the incrrect jack may damage the tablet. Turn Yur Tablet On and Off The instructins belw explain hw t turn yur tablet n and ff. Turn Yur Tablet On Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key. Turn Yur Tablet Off 1. Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key t pen the Device ptins menu. 2. Tuch Pwer ff t turn the tablet ff. Yur screen remains blank while yur tablet is ff (unless the battery is charging). Turn Yur Screen On and Off Yur tablet allws yu t quickly turn the screen ff when nt in use and t turn it back n and unlck it when yu need it. Turn the Screen Off When Nt in Use T quickly turn the screen ff, press the Pwer/Lck Key. Tablet Basics 7

16 T save battery pwer, the tablet autmatically turns ff the screen after a certain perid f time when yu leave it idle. Yu will still be able t receive messages while the tablet s screen is ff. Nte: Fr infrmatin n hw t adjust the time befre the screen turns ff, see Screen Timeut. Turn the Screen On and Unlck It 1. T turn the screen n, press the Pwer/Lck Key. 2. Swipe the screen in any directin t unlck the screen. If yu have set up a screen lck, yu will be prmpted t draw the pattern r enter the passwrd r PIN. Fr mre infrmatin, see Lck Screen. Tuchscreen Navigatin Yur tablet s tuchscreen lets yu cntrl actins thrugh a variety f tuch gestures. Tuch When yu want t type using the n-screen keybard, select items n-screen such as applicatin and settings icns, r press n-screen buttns, simply tuch them with yur finger. Tuch and Hld T pen the available ptins fr an item (fr example, a cntact r link in a Web page), tuch and hld the item. Tablet Basics 8

17 Swipe r Slide T swipe r slide means t quickly drag yur finger vertically r hrizntally acrss the screen. Drag T drag, tuch and hld yur finger with sme pressure befre yu start t mve yur finger. While dragging, d nt release yur finger until yu have reached the target psitin. Tablet Basics 9

18 Flick Flicking the screen is similar t swiping, except that yu need t swipe yur finger in light, quick strkes. This finger gesture is always in a vertical directin, such as when flicking the cntacts r message list. Rtate Fr mst screens, yu can autmatically change the screen rientatin frm prtrait t landscape by turning the tablet sideways. When entering text, yu can turn the tablet sideways t bring up a bigger keybard. Tablet Basics 10

19 Nte: Screen rtatin needs t be enabled fr the screen rientatin t autmatically change. Tuch and drag dwn the Ntificatin Panel, then tuch Screen rtatin. Pinch and Spread "Pinch" the screen using yur thumb and frefinger t zm ut r "spread" the screen t zm in when viewing a picture r a Web page. (Mve fingers inward t zm ut and utward t zm in.) 20 Tip: Pinching any Hme screen will let yu see thumbnails f all seven Hme screens. Tuch a thumbnail t g straight t anther Hme screen. Yur Hme Screen The hme screen is the starting pint fr yur tablet s applicatins, functins, and menus. Yu can custmize yur hme screen by adding applicatin icns, shrtcuts, flders, widgets, and mre. Yur hme screen extends beynd the initial screen. Swipe the screen left r right t display additinal screens. Nte: Yu can keep swiping in ne directin and make it back t the main Hme screen. The small circles tward the bttm f the screen let yu knw yur current screen psitin. Tip: Press t return t the main hme screen frm any ther screen. Creating Shrtcuts Learn hw t add, mve, r remve items frm the hme screen. Adding Items frm the Applicatins Menu 1. Press, and then tuch Apps. 2. Tuch and hld an applicatin icn, and then drag it t a Hme screen. 3. Release the screen t lck the new shrtcut int its new psitin n the Hme screen. Adding Items frm the Hme Screen 1. Press t display the Hme screen. 2. Tuch and hld an empty area f the Hme screen, and then chse Apps and widgets. 3. Tuch and hld the applicatin icn, and then drag it t a Hme screen. Release the icn t lck it n the screen. Remving a Shrtcut 1. Press t display the Hme screen. 2. Tuch and hld the desired shrtcut, and then drag it t the Remve icn and release it. As yu place the shrtcut int the Trash, bth items turn red. Nte: This actin des nt delete the applicatin; it simply remves the shrtcut frm the Hme screen. Tablet Basics 12

21 Adding and Remving Primary Shrtcuts Yu can change any f yur primary shrtcuts with the exceptin f the Apps shrtcut. The primary shrtcuts are the bttm rw f app shrtcuts that remain static n all hme screens (by default Cntacts, Internet, and Apps). Nte: Befre replacing a primary shrtcut, yu must first add the replacement shrtcut t the Hme Screen. Fr mre infrmatin, see Creating Shrtcuts. 1. Press t display the Hme screen. 2. Tuch and hld the primary shrtcut yu want t replace and then drag it t an empty space n any Hme screen. 3. Tuch and hld a new shrtcut n the Hme screen, and then drag it t the empty space in the rw f primary shrtcuts. Yu can add up t 5 primary shrtcuts in additin t the Apps shrtcut. Adding and Remving Widgets Widgets are self-cntained applicatins that reside either in yur Widgets tab r n the main r extended Hme screens. Unlike a shrtcut, the Widget appears as an n-screen applicatin. Widgets can include Cntacts shrtcuts, bkmarks, music playlists, Gmail and accunts, and many ther types f apps. Adding a Widget 1. Press t display the Hme screen. 2. Tuch and hld an empty area f the Hme screen, and then chse Apps and widgets > Widgets. 3. Tuch and hld a widget, and then drag it t a Hme screen. Release the widget t lck it n the screen. Remving a Widget 1. Press t display the Hme screen. 2. Tuch and hld the desired widget, and then drag it t the Remve icn. Nte: This actin des nt delete the widget it simply remves it frm the current screen. Extended Hme Screens In additin t the main Hme screen, yur tablet can have up t six extended Hme screens t prvide mre space fr adding icns, widgets, and mre. 22 drag acrss the screen t mve frm the main screen t an extended screen. There can be up t six extended screens in additin t the main Hme screen. Nte: Yu cannt add mre screens, unless yu have previusly deleted any f the existing screens. The maximum number f hme screens is seven. T g directly t a particular screen: 1. Frm any hme screen, pinch the screen t display thumbnail images f all screens. 2. Tuch the screen yu want t pen. Recent Apps Yu can access recently used applicatins thrugh a display f shrtcuts t the applicatins themselves. 1. Press and hld frm any screen t display Recent apps. 2. Tuch an image t pen the applicatin. Wallpapers Yu can chse a picture t display n the Hme Screen, Lck screen, r n bth the Hme and Lck screens. Chse frm preladed wallpaper images r select a pht yu have dwnladed r taken with the Camera. 1. Frm any Hme screen, tuch and hld n an empty area f the screen. The Hme screen menu displays. Tuch Set wallpaper. r Press, and then tuch > Settings > Display > Wallpaper. 2. Tuch Hme screen, Lck screen, r Hme and lck screens. 3. Chse a surce fr wallpaper: Gallery: Chse a picture frm Gallery. Fllw the prmpts t crp the picture and save it as wallpaper. Live wallpapers: Chse a mving scene fr the backgrund (Hme screen nly). ID wallpapers: Select a wallpaper frm the currently assigned ID pack (Hme screen nly). Travel wallpaper: Display recmmended destinatins n yur Lck screen (Lck screen nly). Ggle vice typing allws yu t speak yur entries. Samsung keybard allws yu t enter text by tuching keys n a virtual QWERTY keybard. Samsung keybard includes ptinal predictive text, which matches yur key tuches t cmmn wrds s yu can select a wrd t insert it int yur text. Swype lets yu enter wrds by swiping acrss the virtual QWERTY keybard. Instead f tuching each key, use yur finger t trace ver each letter f a wrd. Yu can als tuch letters t enter wrds. Select a Default Text Input Methd Yu can select a default Text Input Methd frm Settings, r chse ne at any time while entering text. 36 Cntacts The Cntacts applicatin lets yu stre and manage cntacts frm a variety f surces, including cntacts yu enter and save directly in yur tablet as well as cntacts synchrnized with yur Ggle Accunt, yur PC, cmpatible prgrams (including Exchange Server), and yur Facebk friends. Get Started with Cntacts Befre using Cntacts, it s best t learn a few basics. Yur tablet autmatically srts the Cntacts entries alphabetically. Cntacts can be stred in device memry. Yu can als create cntacts that sync with an accunt such as a Ggle cntact r a Crprate (Micrsft Exchange ActiveSync) cntact. When yu create a new cntact, yu will be asked where yu want t stre the cntact. Sme ptins are: Device cntacts are stred in device memry. Nte: If the tablet is ever reset t its factry default parameters, lcally stred cntacts (device cntacts) can be lst. Ggle cntacts are shared with yur existing Ggle Accunt and can als be imprted t yur tablet after yu have created a Ggle Mail accunt. Micrsft Exchange ActiveSync cntacts are shared with a Micrsft Exchange accunt. Access Cntacts Press and tuch Cntacts. Add a Cntact Yu can add cntacts directly int the Cntacts applicatin. Enter details such as name, tablet numbers, addresses, mailing addresses, and mre. 1. Press and tuch Cntacts. 2. Tuch, and then chse a strage accunt, if yu have multiple accunts set up n yur tablet. 3. Tuch cntact fields t enter infrmatin. Set Up Yur Ggle Accunt n Yur Device When yu set up yur Ggle Accunt n yur device, yu have access t Ggle apps and infrmatin n the device. 1. Press and tuch > Settings. 2. Use the fllwing prcedure t synchrnize yur tablet with a crprate accunt. Nte: Yu can set up multiple Micrsft Exchange ActiveSync accunts n yur tablet. 1. Press and tuch Menu > Settings. 2. Receive Infrmatin Using Bluetth Yur tablet is capable f receiving a wide variety f file types with Bluetth, including phts, music tracks, and dcuments such as PDFs. 1. Press and tuch > Settings > Bluetth. 2. Tuch the Bluetth ON/OFF slider t turn Bluetth n. 3. Tuch the check bx next t yur tablet's Bluetth name t make it discverable. 4. On the sending device, send ne r mre files t yur tablet. Refer t the device s dcumentatin fr instructins n sending infrmatin ver Bluetth. 5. If prmpted, enter the same passcde n bth yur tablet and the ther device, r cnfirm the aut-generated passcde. A Bluetth authrizatin request is displayed n yur tablet. 6. If yu want t autmatically receive files frm the sending device in future, select the Always allw this device check bx. When a file is transferred, a ntificatin is displayed. Tuch Accept.
