3 11th Annual Conference Trauma-focused Interventions for Children, Adolescents and Families: School, Clinical and Community Approaches Friday, May 4, :30 a.m.- 4 p.m. Victor E. Clarke Education Center South Miami Hospital U.S. 1 and SW 62 Avenue
4 11th Annual Conference Trauma-focused Interventions for Children, Adolescents and Families: School, Clinical and Community Approaches Friday, May 4, 2007 Victor E. Clarke Education Center 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. South Miami Hospital U.S. 1 and SW 62 Avenue ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Violence affects all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups, but its burden falls disproportionately upon urban, poor and minority populations. There is increasing evidence of the impact of trauma exposure on children's neurophysiological and psychological development. This conference brings together three world leaders Drs. Esther Deblinger, Betty Pfefferbaum and Marleen Wong, who have vast experience working with victimized children, adolescents and their families. They will discuss ways to identify, assess and conduct intervention programs in various settings such as schools, clinics and communities. A major focus of the conference will be the presentation of ways to implement evidence-based trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapies (TF-CBT). TF-CBT is the recommended standard of care for children and adolescents who have experienced abuse and trauma. (See and for descriptions of these treatment approaches.) The presenters will discuss how educators, physicians, mental health professionals, clergy, police officers and other members of the community can work to reduce the negative impact of trauma experiences and foster ways to nurture resilience. TARGET AUDIENCE Educators, guidance counselors, psychologists, social workers, mental health workers, marriage and family therapists, social agency personnel, judges, law enforcement personnel, clergy, pediatricians, primary care physicians and psychiatrists. CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES As a result of attending this conference, participants should be better able to: Identify and assess the effects of victimization; Conduct trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral treatment (TF-CBT); Address the needs of family members of traumatized children and adolescents; Implement trauma-based interventions in a variety of settings, including schools, clinics and communities. MEETING THE CHALLENGE: CONSIDERING SOME FACTS (See for a discussion of ways to nurture resilience in high-risk children and families) There are approximately 2 million cases of child maltreatment (physical abuse and neglect) each year in the U.S. 3.3 million children in the U.S. witness assaults against their mothers annually. 40 percent of men who abuse their female partners also abuse their children. 30 percent of children living in high-crime neighborhoods have witnessed a shooting, 35 percent have seen a stabbing and 24 percent have seen someone murdered. 20 million children live in households with an addictive caregiver, and of that population approximately 675,000 children are suspected of being abused. Exposure to violence is associated with childhood depression, behavioral problems, poor school performance, decreased IQ, impaired mental ability, lower grades and increased incidence of school absence.
