1 Anthroposophic Psychology for the 21 st Century Summer Seminar Intensive July 29 August 2, 2013 at Rudolf Steiner College William Bento, PhD, David Tresemer, PhD, Roberta Nelson, PhD, and Edmund Knighton, PhD This seminar and week intensive will provide an overview of some of the most fundamental ideas and practices found in an anthroposophic counseling approach. This approach is embedded in a sacramental and pastoral path that informs how we engage with meeting the soul needs of the other. It will draw upon Rudolf Steiner s spiritual scientific research on the nature of the soul, transpersonal views of counseling as found in Carl G. Jung s and Roberto Assagioli s work, as well as contemporary best practices in the field of counseling and psychotherapy. Success in the art of counseling is less the result of a clinical technique than it is an outcome of the counselor s capacity to be fully present to the other. Establishing and sustaining one s capacity to sense into the present moment, (also described as presencing by Otto Scharmer), is a critical factor in the counseling vocation; hence it will be a major focus for this week s course. Practices of meditation and mindfulness, along with artistic and movement-based exercises, will be introduced on a daily basis to assure an experiential process informs our capacities for deeply sensing into the present, and accessing the pregnant opportunities this can offer the therapeutic encounter. themes as they change throughout the lifespan will be explored through the framework of developmental psychology, biographical counseling, and an anthroposophic perspective on soul stages. Paradigms for assessing personality types in the context of meeting core needs will be presented. Dysfunctional coping strategies will be highlighted and deconstructed as a means to finding the most effective way of introducing new and healthier coping strategies into the counseling session. Whole Soul conversations, that consider the full experience of the soul during the counseling session, will be approached from both an esoteric and practical manner. The seminar is designed so that each day will have a specific topic to examine in the light of counseling objectives. Theories addressing psychopathology, therapeutic processes, the therapeutic relationship in the counseling dyad, and the practice of implementing a counseling approach, and counseling in role-play dyads, will take place throughout the week s course. Focus will be brought especially to counseling personality spectrum disorders, depression, addiction and trauma. This summer seminar and intensive is for licensed counselors (LPCC MFT), MSW, School Counselors, and anyone who wishes to deepen and enhance their counseling capacities from an anthroposophic basis. *Continuing Education Units are available.

8 We would like to announce two important changes regarding the Transpersonal Psychology MA, a bold new graduate-level program for students, counselors, medical and psychology professionals, teachers, and others who are passionate about self and social transformation. We have renamed the program Psychology MA: Concentration in Transpersonal and Anthroposophic Psychology, as we believe a degree in counseling psychology holds more credibility for a professional MA licensure track and more accurately describes the nature of the program. The initial launch date has been moved to July 28, The year ahead is an opportunity to expand our overall launch strategy, revise and refine our vision and program design, add an exciting counseling certificate track for non-degree seeking students, complete our program accreditation process* and finalize financial aid packages for students.
