2 JOINING FORCES TO RESTORE LIVES NURSING EDUCATION AND RESEARCH IN VETERANS HEALTH : Transforming Tragedy: Finding Growth Following Life s Traumas October 20-21, 2013 Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation Tampa, FL Activity Code: LS Contact Hours: 10.5 Purpose: The purpose of this national annual conference is to support a comprehensive national initiative to include education about issues specific to veteran s health and advances in research into the nursing curriculum to better prepare nurses to care for military veterans and their families. Strategies: Lecture, Images, Handouts, Discussion, Question & Answer TARGET AUDIENCE This conference is designed to meet the educational needs of a targeted audience spanning: Global nursing executives Scientists Faculty Researchers Educators Advanced Practice Nurses Registered Nurses Psychologists Social Workers LEARNING OBJECTIVES MAIN CONFERENCE Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: Describe the physical and psychological health issues of military veterans and their families Discover national pioneering research in including best practices for new treatments, behavioral health and nurse scientists as leaders in veteran s health Identify best available evidenced based practice curriculum to integrate veteran s health into curricula at the undergraduate and graduate levels of nursing education Identify and examine current, relevant and focused nursing research available to integrate new knowledge of veterans health into current professional nursing practice. Assess the role of the professional nurse in supporting veterans health, education and research COURSE DESCRIPTION MAIN CONFERENCE The purpose of this national annual conference, JOINING FORCES TO RESTORE LIVES: Nursing Education and Research in Veterans Health, is to support a comprehensive national initiative to include education about issues specific to veteran s health and advances in research into the nursing curriculum to better prepare nurses to care for military veterans and their families. The dynamic role of nursing professionals spanning nursing executives, scientists, researchers, educators, advanced practice nurses and registered nurses will engage in an educational forum specifically designed to provide current relevant core content to support veterans returning from war or deployment which face a variety of physical and psychological health care needs including: traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, suicidal ideation, homelessness, sexual trauma and substance abuse. USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) REGISTRATION MAIN CONFERENCE: On or before August 21, $249 After August 21, $299 Register online: Online registration for the 2013 Joining Forces to Restore Lives Conference will close at 5:00 pm EST on Monday, October 11, After this time, you may register on-site. CANCELLATION POLICY: Cancellations must be requested in writing via fax to or in writing via to [email protected], and received by October 1, 2013 in order to receive a refund. A $100 cancellation fee will be assessed to cover administrative costs. There are no refunds for noshows or for cancellations received after October 1st, 2013; however, substitutions are welcome without penalty. USF Health reserves the right to cancel this activity due to unforeseen circumstances. In the event of such cancellation, only the registration fee will be returned to the registrant. USF Health will not be responsible for travel expenses incurred by the participant in case of cancellation. Fees include the course content, syllabus, certificate of attendance and food and beverage functions. No registration will be confirmed without full payment. COURSE DESCRIPTION In addition, the Pre-Conference course Transforming Tragedy: Finding Growth Following Life s Traumas will be held on Sunday, October 20th, which summarizes the causes and treatment of adverse reactions to traumatic events in directly applicable ways. This knowledge adds novel applications to treatment that can be used immediately in one s clinical care with trauma survivors, such as returning veterans, community survivors of traumatic events, including rape, physical assault, community disasters and the other tragic events that occur in the lives of our patients. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: Gain an understanding of the common features in current evidenced based psychological treatments for post traumatic disorders Integrate findings from resilience and post traumatic growth literature into practical treatment considerations Learn how to provide personal narrative interventions in a flexible, evidence influenced fashion Gain practical application of relaxation and mindfulness techniques Apply common elements of cognitive changes and exposure based treatment in a personalized, flexible fashion while remaining true to current evidenced treatments ACCREDITATION NURSES: USF Health is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation.
