1 AUGUST 19, :30 AM 12:45 PM DBT Skills & 12-Step Recovery Rebecca Anne, LCSW, M.Div. & Lisa Cottrell, LPC Workshop facilitators will teach participants basic concepts of Dialectical Behavior Therapy's (DBT) Skills Training Modules including Core Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Participants will gain an understanding of overlap between DBT and 12-Step recovery. Participants will experientially participate in practicing DBT skills in a way that supports 12-Step recovery and will learn practical ways of integrating principles in 12-Step recovery into teaching DBT skills. Understand the main concepts in Dialectical Behavior Therapy's Skills Training Modules including Core Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation, and Interperson Effectiveness. Be able to identify many areas of overlap between DBT skills and 12-Step recovery. Experientially participate in utilizing DBT skills in a way that supports 12-Step recovery. Learn specific examples and analogies for integrating principles of 12-Step recovery into teaching the DBT skills. Rebecca Anne, LCSW, received a Master of Social Work from the University of Georgia and a Master of Divinity from Emory University. She specializes in assessment and treatment of addiction and teaches Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills. Becky co-facilitates a group focused on integration of DBT Skills into daily life in early recovery. She has worked at Talbott for amost 5 years. Lisa Cottrell, LPC, specializes in treating addiction and trauma. She lectures on effective communication, teaches Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills and leads the Women's Recovery Track at Talbott Recovery. Lisa has been with Talbott for the last 7 years and has served in a variety of positions.
2 SEPTEMBER 23, :30 AM 12:45 PM Prescription Drug Abuse in Young Adults Michael L. Fishman, M.D. During this session, Dr. Fishman will discuss various prescription medications commonly abused by young adults. He will also discuss the problem with online pharmacies, especially those out of the country. Dr. Fishman will present the potential dangers of drug interactions and withdrawals. Be able to summarize criteria for dependency and the difference between physiological dependence vs. the disease of addiction. Be able to discuss the dangers of withdrawal from sedative hypnotics and depressants. Be able to explain what an opioid agonist/antogonist is. Michael L. Fishman, M.D. is a nationally recognized leader in the treatment of young adults suffering from addictive diseases. He specializes in addiction medicine and the treatment of nicotine dependence. After graduating magna cum laude in biology from the University of Georgia, Dr. Fishman received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia where he also did an internship and residency training. He is the Director of the Young Adult Program at Talbott Recovery in Atlanta, GA and holds the following certifications: Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners, MRO Certification, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
3 SEPTEMBER 30, :30 AM 12:45 PM Staying Clean from Crystal Meth: Understanding the Unique Clinical Issues in Treating Methamphetamine Addiction Brian J. Dew, Ph.D. Atlanta continues to have the highest rate of methamphetamine use of any city on the East Coast. Its deleterious effects on individuals, families, and communities have been well-documented by local treatment professionals, public health officials, and clinical practitioners. In this presentation, the biopsychosocial aspects of methamphetamine will be explored, unique risks will be discussed, and challenges to treatment will be reviewed. The presenter's research results from both qualitative and quantitative investigations with active and previous methamphetamine users will also be presented. Be able to demonstrate their understanding of the biopsychosocial aspects of methamphetamine use. Be able to summarize knowledge of the unique psychological and physical risks associated with using methamphetamine. Be able to discuss the unique therapeutic challenges that methamphetamine users often present in clinical settings. Brian J. Dew, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services, currently serves as Chair of the Counseling and Psychological Services Department at Georgia State University. Dr. Dew's research on methamphetamine users has earned him the 2007 Outstanding Faculty Research Award from Georgia State University's Department of Education as well as the 2007 Outstanding Addictions and Offender Professional Award by the Association of Addictions and Offender Counseling. He cofounded the Atlanta Meth Task Force in 2004 and served as its Director from 2005 to Dr. Dew served from as Atlanta's representative to the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA) Community Epidemiological Work Group. In this capacity, he serves as NIDA's chief liaison to tracking drug trends in metropolitan Atlanta.
4 OCTOBER 28, :30 AM 12:45 PM Working with Couples in Recovery Beverly Baskerville, LCSW & Katie Myers, LCSW When one or both people in a relationship have a history of addiction, there are special issues that the partners need to address in order to have healthy intimacy and support in the relatinship. Being in a relationship with an addict can often result in preoccupation, dishonesty, manipulation, self-centeredness, denial, and entitlement. For many it becomes an emotional roller coaster of fear, sadness, anger, loneliness and isolation. In trying to cope with these behaviors, dysfunctional patters often develop within the coupleship. couples in recovery will need to become aware of unhealthy patterns of behaviors within the relationship and understand the impact the disease has had on their relatinship. This workshop will address the components necessary to working with couples in addiction and the unique challenges they face in therapy. Learn how the disease of addiction impacts the relationship. Understand the three stages of recovery for the addict and the significant other and its value in couple's therapy. Learn the importance of couples developing communication skills to turn conflict into connection. Beverly C. Baskerville, LCSW, is the Director of Family Services and Patient Advocate at Talbott Recovery in Atlanta, GA. She is clinical supervisor for the family counseling department and structures the Family Program. In her role as Patient Advocate at Talbott's main campus, she serves as a liaison between patient and staff to advocate for fair and impartial resolutions for patient concerns. She has over 25 years of experience in the therapy field. Beverly also has extensive knowledge and training in the field of addiction, especially from a perspective of addiction as a family disease. Her focus has been individual, couple's, and family therapy. Katie Myers, LCSW, received her Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Kentucky. She began her career in addictions working with adolescents in an intensive outpatient program in Lexington, KY. Katie moved to Atlanta two years ago and has found her new home at Talbott Recovery, working specifically with families and couples, helping them navigate recovery and understand the disease of addiction., In addition to providing support and education during family therapy sessions, she also runs multi-family and couples groups each month during Talbott's family workshop. Katie has also begun training under Patrick Carnes to become a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist. Her other areas of therapeutic interest include working with women who struggle with eatin disorders and those whith compromised self-esteem.
5 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT Psychologists: Application has been made for 3 hours under Area IV for the September 23 and September 30 seminars in accordance with the guidelines established by the Georgia Composite Board. Though not approved by the Georgia Psychological Association/APA, other seminars in this series may be used as credit under Area III of psychology licensing requirements.
