Participants will be able to explore the history and origins of play therapy. In addition, how to apply theoretical understanding to basic play therapy techniques will be examined. There will be opportunities for participants to practice simple interventions that help engage children and families in play therapy.
2 Learning Objectives: Following the workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Participants will be able to identify 3 theories of play therapy. 2. Participants will be able to describe and utilize 3 play therapy interventions. 3. Participants will be able to explain the role of play in play therapy. Instructional Level: Beginner Workshop 1B: Diagnosis and Play Therapy with Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers Presenter: Elizabeth Sorensen, LCSW, RPT Workshop Description: This interactive workshop features directive and non-directive play therapy activities to assess and treat children birth through five years. An overview of the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood: Revised (DC0-3R) will be presented. Learning Objectives: Following the workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Analyze infant mental health diagnoses using a development based diagnostic system. 2. Demonstrate 3 play therapy assessment activities to use with young children. 3. Apply 3 play therapy treatment methods to use with young children. FRIDAY AFTERNOON Workshop 2A: Application of Multimodal Play Therapy Techniques for the Assessment and Treatment of Bullying Presenter: Mary Ruth Cross, MFT, NCC, RPT-S & Leslie Baker, MFT, NCC Workshop Description: This workshop will provide an integrated approach to the treatment of bullying through the lens of integrating play therapy theory and play therapy techniques. The use of computer-mediated therapy will be addressed as additional play therapy technique. 1. Identify at least 3 types of bullying experienced by children and teens. 2. Utilize 3 assessment techniques that are play therapy based for identifying bullying in teens and children. 3. Identify and utilize at least 3 multimodal play therapy interventions to address bullying in children and teens. 4. List three computer resources to utilize in computer mediated play therapy available to help empower children and teens against bullying.
3 Workshop 2B: Mindful and Heartful: Integrating Transpersonal Psychology Interventions in the Playroom Presenter: Danielle Saunders, MA, MFT Workshop Description: This training provides experiential exercises that can be integrated into a play therapy practice from a clinical framework of transpersonal and humanistic psychology. In addition, the application of several techniques including mindfulness, guided imagery and Native American healing in a clinical setting will be demonstrated. 1. Define transpersonal psychology. 2. List three transpersonal psychological play therapy techniques to use with individual or group child clients. 3. Describe counter-transference issues that came up during the presentation of this material and how it may affect the client. 4. Identify two clinical applications of the transpersonal psychological play therapy techniques discussed. SATURDAY MORNING Workshop 3A: Helping children heal when bad things happen: Utilizing play therapy with victims and witnesses of violence and disaster Presenter: Lisa Staab Shadburn, PsyD Workshop Description: This workshop focuses on using play therapy with individuals exposed to traumatic events, including violence, accidents, and disasters. Case examples will be featured, including projective drawings by traumatized children, and attendee participation is encouraged through discussion and hands-on activities. Learning Objectives: Following the workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Name two play therapy tools to assist in assessment of children who have experienced trauma. 2. Describe three coping skills that help children deal with trauma. 3. List three specific play therapy activities to use with children who have experienced trauma. Workshop 3B: Superhero Play: Incorporating Modern Myths into the Play Therapy Process Presenter: Jodi Smith, LCSW, RPT-S Workshop Description: This workshop focuses on increasing participants understanding of
4 superheroes and how to incorporate them and other popular children s characters into their play therapy practice. This interactive presentation incorporates discussion, video clips, and case examples with an emphasis on experiential learning! 1. Examine how to integrate the use of superheroes and other familiar characters and storylines in play therapy. 2. Discuss 2 methods for helping children heal by creating their own superheroes and stories in play therapy sessions. 3. Learn three play therapy interventions utilizing superheroes or superhero mythology. SATURDAY AFTERNOON Workshop 4A: Ending the Play Therapy Relationship: Thoughts and Activities Regarding Termination Presenter: Quint Paige, MFT, RPT-S Workshop Description: No matter the play therapy modality, if there s a beginning there's an ending. This workshop focuses on preparing for and bringing closure to the play therapy relationship so clinician and client are ready, willing, and able to say goodbye. Learning Objectives: Following this workshop, participants will be: 1. Able to describe 3 different types of endings (terminations). 2. Prepared to mindfully plan for successful closure with clients. 3. Able to apply 7 techniques in order to bring closure to the play therapy relationship. Workshop 4B: Sexting, Texting, Mobility and Porn: Interventions in Family Play Therapy to Address the Use and Impact of Modern Technology for Children and Adolescents Presenter: Leslie Baker, MFT, NCC Workshop Description: This workshop will demonstrate family play therapy interventions that assess and treat problematic behaviors that can occur through the use of mobile devices, notepads and computers. Assessing technology use in the family, how families establish value based boundaries and parental computer safety tools will also be discussed. 1. Identify at least 3 dangers of sexting, experienced by children and teens and their families. 2. Identify 3 family play therapy-based assessment techniques for identifying unhealthy technology use in children and teens. 3. Identify and utilize at least 3 family play therapy interventions to address sexting and porn
5 in children and teens. 4. Identify three computer resources to utilize with parents to increase internet safety for children and teens. Who should attend? Play Therapists, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, School Counselors, Psychologists, Students, and Interns. Continuing Education: This workshop meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs and LCSWs per day a required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider # PCE 1007). CALAPT is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Psychologists may receive 6 hours of continuing education credit per day for this workshop. Six hours of continuing education are offered on Saturday as required by the Association for Play Therapy (APT). The California Association for Play Therapy (CALAPT) is approved by APT to offer continuing education specific to play therapy (Provider # ). CALAPT maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Partial credit (fewer than 6CEs) is not available for this workshop. Cancellations and Refunds: Requests for refunds must be made in writing to the CALAPT Treasurer, Colleen Sebastian, PO Box 597, Pismo Beach, CA Requests must be postmarked no later than two weeks prior to the workshop date in order to receive refund.
