Notwithstnding this, Fulties my develop their own speifi guidelines s permitted within the frmework of these Rules. 3 Definitions 3.1 A Msters Degree by Reserh shll, in generl, hve the objetives of trining students in reserh methodology nd tehniques b developing ritil evlution skills pproprite to their reserh topi trining students in the pplition of suh methods by onduting speified progrm of reserh

2 under pproprite supervision nd the development of new knowledge where possible d providing trining in literture nlysis nd e enourging debte in the substntive re of the thesis t n dvned level. 3.2 Exminers for Msters degree should stisfy themselves tht the ndidte hs: thorough understnding of the relevnt methodology s demonstrted by thorough ritil review of the literture b demonstrted ompetene through judiious seletion nd pplition of pproprite methods to yield meningful results demonstrted the pity to evlute ritilly these results nd presented ler nd well written thesis in ordne with the formt speified in 8.3 below. 4 Eligibility nd Ademi stnding Requirements 4.1 Only interntionl pplints re eligible for dmission to the bove-nmed Mster by Reserh progrms. 4.2 The demi stnding required for eptne s ndidte for Mster degree by reserh in the University shll be relevnt Honours degree of Bhelor or relevnt degree of Mster of the University of Adelide or the equivlent thereof. Where n Honours or Msters degree is presented s qulifition for dmission to Msters by Reserh progrm, the Msters degree must ontin reserh omponent deemed pproprite by the Reserh Edution nd Development Committee. An Honours or Msters degree tht ontins only oursework will not be epted for this purpose. 4.3 A person who holds relevnt Honours or Msters degree of nother university or equivlent thereof, my be epted s ndidte provided tht the progrm of study undertken nd the demi stndrd rehed re equivlent to those required of ndidte who is grdute of the University of Adelide. 4.4 The Committee my ept s ndidte grdute who does not qulify under Rules 4.1 or 4.2 but hs demonstrted high level of demi hievement nd hs ompleted to the stisftion of the Committee t lest one yer of full-time postgrdute study or reserh nd pssed qulifying exmintion of Honours stndrd presribed by the pproprite Fulty nd pproved by the Committee or b obtined qulifition tht inludes signifint reserh omponent or is experiened in reserh s evidened by reserh publitions or written reports on reserh work done by the pplint. 4.5 Applints for Msters degree by Reserh must stisfy the minimum English lnguge profiieny requirement s set by the University. 5 Credit for work previously ompleted 5.1 At the time of pplition, the Committee my grnt redit in Mster by Reserh progrm for reserh undertken in nother progrm in the University or in nother university or tertiry institution. 5.2 In onsidertion for eptne under Rule 5.1, the Committee must be stisfied tht the person is of suh demi stnding s would be required of other ndidtes for the degree nd b the person s progress so fr hs been stisftory nd the reserh for whih redit is grnted is of stisftory stndrd. 6 Enrolment 6.1 A person shll not be enrolled s ndidte for the degree unless: the pplint s proposed field of study nd reserh is eptble to the University nd the Shool/Disipline responsible for the supervision of the ndidte s work b there re vilble t lest two supervisors ble to provide supervision of the proposed ndidy throughout its likely durtion. The prinipl supervisor shll be member of the demi stff of the Shool/Disipline of the University in whih the ndidte is enrolled nd suitble resoures nd filities re vilble (either in the University or, by rrngement eptble to the Fulty, elsewhere) for the proposed reserh to be undertken. 6.2 Exept with the permission of the Den of Grdute Studies, ndidte my not enrol onurrently in nother demi progrm. 6.3 Exept with the permission of the Den of Grdute Studies, ndidte who is permitted to enrol onurrently in nother demi progrm nd who is grnted leve must intermit ll demi progrms in whih he or she is enrolled. 7 Durtion of ndidture nd mode of study 7.1 A ndidte my proeed to the degree by full-time study or, if the Hed of the Shool/Disipline

3 onerned is stisfied tht the ndidte hs dequte time to pursue supervised reserh under the ontrol of the University, by hlf-time study. Exept in irumstnes pproved by the Committee, the work for the degree shll be ompleted nd the thesis submitted: 7.2 in the se of full-time ndidte, not less thn one yer nor more thn two yers from the dte of ommenement of ndidture b in the se of hlf-time ndidte, not less thn two yers nor more thn four yers from the dte of ommenement of ndidture in the se of ndidte grnted redit under Rule 5.1, the ndidture shll normlly expire: i in the se of full-time ndidte, not less thn one yer nd not more thn two yers from the dte the ndidte ommened work in the other progrm or ii in the se of hlf-time ndidte, not less thn two yers nd not more thn four yers from the dte the ndidte ommened work in the other progrm. 8 Work for the degree 8.1 A ndidte shll pursue n pproved progrm of study nd reserh under the ontrol of the University nd under the generl guidne of supervisors ppointed by the University leding to the genertion of thesis. 8.2 Where Mster by reserh progrm ontins ourse work, the ndidte shll be required to pss both the ourse work nd thesis omponents independently but, in exeptionl irumstnes, this requirement my be wived by the Committee. 8.3 Cndidtes must t ll times bide by the Austrlin Code for the Responsible Condut of Reserh nd ssoited poliies of the University of Adelide. 8.4 The University reognises tht thesis my tke vriety of formts tht re influened by the disipline or field of study. Students should onsult their supervisor(s) nd the Speifitions for Thesis nd, if pplible, the Speifi Ademi Progrm Rules, to determine the most pproprite formt. b Work presented in the thesis must hve been produed during the period of ndidture. d Published works inluded in thesis under these Rules must hve been published or epted by publishers pproved by the Disipline nd in ordne with DEEWR riteri for the Higher Edution Reserh Dt Colletion. Where pproprite, texts my be submitted in mnusript form nd suitbly identified s suh. The thesis will normlly be submitted in English. Where demi resons to submit the thesis in lnguge other thn English exist, written pplition should be mde to the Den of Grdute Studies for pprovl. Where pprovl is grnted, n bstrt in English will be required t the time of submission. 8.5 Irrespetive of the nture of the thesis, its ontent, in prt or in totl, must not hve been epted for ny other degree t the University of Adelide or other demi institution in the nme of the ndidte. Cndidtes should onsult the pproprite reommended delrtions nd the University s Speifitions for Thesis. b A thesis tht inorportes publitions shll lso ontin: ontextul sttement tht normlly inludes the ims underpinning the publition/s; literture review or ommentry tht estblishes the field of knowledge nd provides link between publitions; nd onlusion showing the overll signifine of the work nd ontribution to knowledge. Where portfolio of publitions is submitted, s Mster by Reserh thesis or is ombined with onventionl written nrrtive, the publitions must be losely relted in terms of subjet mtter nd form ohesive reserh nrrtive. The number nd length of sholrly works inluded in portfolio of publitions shll be determined by Fulties in onsulttion with speifi Disipline res. Where the publition/s re deemed to onstitute body of work worthy of the wrd, the ndidte my inlude dditionl mteril submitted for publition. 8.6 Where thesis ontins work ttributed to joint or multiple uthors, for exmple o-uthored publitions, ndidtes must inlude ler sttement of their ontribution nd tht of the o-uthors (in terms of the oneptulistion of the work, its relistion nd its doumenttion). 8.7 Jointly- or multi-uthored works must hve the signed pprovl of the o-uthor(s) ttesting to the ndidte s limed ontribution nd uthorising the inlusion of the publition(s) in the thesis. 8.8 A thesis should not normlly exeed 40,000 words. 8.9 Cretive work my be in the form of exhibition, musi omposition or performne, literry work, film or other formt... pproved by the Reserh Edution nd Development Committee. b The retive work should provide oherent demonstrtion tht the ndidte hs rehed n

4 pproprite stndrd... in the reserh nd hs mde signifint nd originl ontribution to knowledge in the re. The retive work should be the reserh outome, while the exegesis tht ompnies it should desribe the reserh proess nd elborte, eluidte nd ple in ontext the rtisti prtie undertken. 9 Required progrm of tivities t the ommenement of ndidture 9.1 Eh ndidte (inluding those on remote ndidture) will be enrolled on provisionl bsis for the first twelve months of the degree. 9.2 A mjor review of progress fter twelve months will reommend onfirmtion of Msters ndidture, or further period of onditionl ndidture not exeeding six months, or termintion. 9.3 Cndidtes grnted further period of onditionl enrolment will undergo seond mjor review t the end of this time period. No further periods of onditionl enrolment will be permitted. 9.4 Continution of enrolment t the end of this period will depend on overll demi progress nd the ompletion of set tivities to the stisftion of the Shool/Disipline onerned. These tivities will form prt of Strutured Progrm of tivities extending through the ndidture. 9.5 Suh tivities will be determined by the Shool/Disipline through whih the ndidte is enrolled nd in the first yer must inlude the ompletion nd presenttion of the reserh proposl nd other progrms nd skills trining deemed neessry by the Shool/Disipline. In the se of interntionl students, ompletion of the Integrted Bridging Progrm is lso required, exept in those ses where n exemption hs been grnted. 9.6 The reserh proposl must be greed nd submitted to the Adelide Grdute Centre preferbly within three, but no lter thn six months (or hlf-time equivlent) from the ommenement of ndidture. 9.7 A ndidte who hs ompleted the first yer of Mster by reserh progrm nd who is qulified nd permitted by the Committee to trnsfer to the degree of Dotor of Philosophy will be deemed to hve ompleted the Core Component of the Strutured Progrm nd the trnsfer will onfirm ndidture in the PhD. 10 Remote ndidture 10.1 Initil enrolment s remote ndidte my be permitted on demi grounds where the Shool/Disipline onerned n ensure the provision of externl supervision, filities nd ffilition to the stisftion of the Reserh Edution nd Development Committee Unless otherwise exempted, remote ndidte will normlly be required to omplete period/s of residene in the University of Adelide s determined by the Reserh Edution nd Development Committee in onsulttion with the Shool/Disipline onerned Notwithstnding Rule 10.2, remote ndidte will normlly be required to undertke his/her ndidture in n internl ttendne mode until suh time s the Core Component of the Strutured Progrm hs been ompleted In ordne with rule 7.1, remote ndidte my proeed to the degree either by full-time or hlftime study On the reommendtion of the Shool/Disipline, the Committee t ny time my permit n enrolled student to enrol s remote ndidte subjet to the onditions speified in 10.1, 10.2 nd 10.3 bove A remote ndidte my be permitted to onvert to n internl mode of ttendne t ny time nd shll be subjet to the onditions normlly pplied Notwithstnding Rules 10.1 to 10.6 bove, remote ndidtes re lso required to bide by the other Rules nd guidelines for the degree of Mster by Reserh. 11 Review of demi progress 11.1 The Committee my review the progress of ndidte t ny time during the progrm of ndidture nd, if the ndidte s progress is unstisftory, my terminte the ndidture Progress nd onfirmtion of ndidture will our twelve months fter enrolment (see 9.2 bove). Additionl reviews will our round Otober eh yer with written reports forwrded to the Den of Grdute Studies. A ndidte s re-enrolment in the following yer is onditionl upon stisftory progress in the yer of the review. 12 Absene from the University Exept for remote ndidtes, the Committee, on the reommendtion of the Shool/Disipline onerned, my permit ndidte to pursue wy from the University work onneted with the reserh for the degree. Suh permission my only be grnted under speil irumstnes during provisionl ndidture. 13 Leve of bsene

5 A ndidte whose work is interrupted for period of time my be grnted umultive leve by the Committee of up to twelve months. If n pplition for leve is pproved, the minimum nd mximum periods speified in Rule 7.1 will be djusted ordingly by dding the length of the pproved leve. 14 In exeptionl irumstnes, the Committee my grnt ndidte umultive leve in exess of 12 months. Where student is grnted this exeptionl leve, the University will endevour to ensure, but nnot gurntee, tht pproprite supervision nd resoures will be vilble to support the student on return from leve. 15 In some fields of study, time plys ritil role in the urreny of the reserh. In suh ses, the reserh projet my no longer be urrent following leve nd the University my not be ble to seure supervision in n re where urreny is ompromised. Additionlly, the University my not be ble to ommodte n mendment to the reserh projet. Under these irumstnes, ontinution of ndidture my not be possible nd the only options will be: i ii withdrwl by the ndidte or termintion of ndidture by the University. 16 The ndidture of student who tkes leve from the University without pprovl will be suspended immeditely, on notifition of the Adelide Grdute Centre. 17 A ndidte grnted leve must inform the Adelide Grdute Centre in writing of resumption of ndidture within two weeks of the pproved dte of return. 18 A ndidte seeking to extend period of leve must pply in writing for n extension of leve t lest one week prior to the originlly pproved dte of return. 19 Withdrwl from ndidture 19.1 A student my withdrw from ndidture t ny time Cndidture my be reinstted t future due dte without demi onsequenes, subjet to the ontinuing urreny of the reserh undertken prior to withdrwl nd the urreny of the reserh skills of the ndidte. The pprovl of the hed of Shool nd the ongoing vilbility of pproprite supervision nd resoures re lso required. 20 Suspension of ndidture A student s ndidture my be suspended for filure to omply with ny forml requirement of ndidture, inluding: filing to bide by the responsibilities of reserh ndidtes s detiled in the Reserh Student Hndbook b filing to undertke required review of progress by the due dte or extended due dte filing to respond to ny University orrespondene sent to the nominted miling ddress or mpus emil ddress... within two months of the requested dte of response d filing to ept resonble offers of supervision filitted by the University e tking leve without prior pprovl f filing to return from leve on the greed dte g filing to notify the Grdute Centre of return from leve within two weeks of return nd h Non-pyment of University fees nd hrges. 21 Termintion of ndidture A student s ndidture my be terminted where: progress is unstisftory following review of progress, whether progrmmed or otherwise or b where ndidture hs been suspended for more thn twelve months or where the ndidte hs filed to omplete the ore omponent of the strutured progrm within six months or hlf-time equivlent of ommenement. 22 A terminted ndidture my only be reinstted following suessful ppel. 23 Extension of ndidture Irrespetive of full time or hlf time sttus, ndidte my be grnted by the Committee one extension of ndidture only of six months beyond the mximum period speified in Rule 7. If the thesis hs not been submitted by the end of the extended period, the ndidture will lpse. 24 Completion of thesis outside the University A ndidte who hs ompleted the equivlent of one yer of full-time work under the ontrol of the University, who hs ompleted the experimentl work (where pproprite) nd whose progress is suffiiently well dvned to permit the stisftory ompletion of the thesis outside the University, my be grnted permission by the Committee to omplete the writing-up of the thesis outside the University. If suh permission is grnted the ndidte will be llowed either twelve months or until the

6 end of ndidture, whihever is the lesser, to submit the thesis. If the thesis hs not been submitted by the end of the writing-up period the ndidture will lpse. 25 Lpsed ndidture 25.1 Cndidture shll be deemed to hve lpsed if the ndidte fils to submit his/her thesis within the mximum durtion of the progrm s speified in Rule 7, provided tht the ndidture hs not otherwise been withdrwn, suspended, or terminted A ndidture, whih hs lpsed for not more thn twelve months, my be resumed if the ompleted thesis, whih hs not deprted from the field of study tht ws being pursued before the ndidture lpsed, is subsequently submitted to the Diretor, Adelide Grdute Centre. The thesis will only be epted for exmintion if the Shool/Disipline ertifies tht it is stisftory to tht Shool/Disipline Approvl of the Committee is required for the resumption of lpsed ndidture under ny other onditions. 26 Intention to submit thesis A ndidte shll notify the Diretor, Adelide Grdute Centre, in writing, pproximtely three months before he or she expets to submit thesis for exmintion. A summry of the thesis, together with the proposed thesis title, shll be submitted t the sme time. 27 Submission nd exmintion of the thesis 27.1 On ompletion of the pproved progrm of study nd reserh ndidte shll submit thesis embodying the... results of tht study nd reserh, nd my submit lso, in support of the thesis, other relevnt mteril b b The thesis shll embody the vlues desribed in Rule 3.2. thesis will normlly be written in English where sound demi resons exist for submission of thesis in lnguge other thn English, n pplition for pprovl my be mde in writing to the Den of Grdute Studies. The pplition must hve the support of the supervisors nd Postgrdute Coordintor/Hed of Disipline nd the Hed of Shool if the Den pproves the submission of thesis in lnguge other thn English, the submission must be ompnied by n bstrt written in English The formt of thesis whih inorportes publitions nd/or mnusripts shll be in ordne with Rules 8.6 to The Hed of Shool/Disipline shll ertify tht the thesis is worthy of exmintion In the se of thesis submitted in the res of musil, rtisti or visul prtie, presenttion my be in one of three forms, ) by theoretil thesis or b) by one or more retive works nd n exegesis or ) series of musi performne reordings nd n exegesis In the se of thesis submitted in the res of musil, rtisti or visul prtie, the retive work nd the exegesis will not be exmined seprtely but s n integrted whole onstituting the originl nd substntil ontribution to knowledge required from Msters ndidtes In the se of visul rts, the exminers will ttend the exhibition t whih time they will be given opy of the exegesis in temporry binding. A finl opy of the exegesis will be provided to the exminers within three months of their viewing the retive work The thesis nd ny other mteril submitted shll be ssessed by exminers externl to the University No thesis, mteril or publitions presented by the ndidte for ny other degree within this or ny other institution shll be so submitted No results, mteril or publitions generted, in whole or prt, from reserh undertken outside of the pproved progrm of study shll be submitted for exmintion The Committee shll presribe the form in whih the thesis shll be submitted nd the number of opies to be submitted. 28 Appointment of exminers 28.1 Cndidtes shll hve the right, prior to the ommenement of the exmintion proess, to identify people they do not wish to exmine their theses. Any suh objetions should be submitted to the Diretor, Adelide Grdute Centre, t the sme time s the notifition of intention to submit required under Rule 26. Suh objetions do not serve s veto Assessment of the thesis shll in every se be by no fewer thn two exminers ppointed by the Committee of whom: b t lest one shll be externl to the University t lest one shll be n demi member or ffilite of tertiry institution.

7 28.3 The ndidte s supervisors shll not be eligible to t s exminers The exminers shll be requested to report in suh form s the Committee will determine nd to reommend one of the lterntives listed in Rule After onsidertion of the reports of the exminers, the Committee my ppoint third externl exminer nd/or n externl rbitrtor. 29 Exmintion results 29.1 After onsidertion of the reports of the exminers nd suh other informtion s it thinks fit, the Committee shll determine tht: b d e the ndidte be wrded the degree or the ndidte be wrded the degree but tht minor mendments be mde or the ndidte be wrded the degree subjet to the speified mendments being mde to the thesis or the ndidte be not wrded the degree but be permitted to re-submit the thesis in revised form within one yer or the ndidte be not wrded the degree In the se of thesis presented for re-exmintion s provided for in Rule 29.1(d), the thesis will, s fr s possible, be ssessed by the originl exminers A thesis presented for re-exmintion will not be submitted for further re-exmintion. 30 Thesis mendments following exmintion The time limits for revision of the thesis re: three months where the exmintion result is to wrd the degree following minor mendments to the thesis (see Rule 29.1(b)), or where the exmintion result is to wrd the degree subjet to the speified mendments being mde to the thesis (see Rule 29.1()) nd twelve months where the exmintion result is not to wrd the degree but to permit resubmission of the thesis in revised form (see Rule 29.1(d)). 31 Cndidtes who require dditionl time to omplete revisions must pply to the Den of Grdute Studies for permission, stting the resons for the request. The request should be pproved by the prinipl supervisor nd the Hed of Shool/Disipline or the Postgrdute Coordintor. 32 Deposit of thesis Suh number of opies of thesis nd ny other mteril on whih the degree is wrded shll be deposited in the Brr Smith Librry or elsewhere s determined by the Committee. Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, the opies shll be vilble for lon nd photoopy. 33 Lon or photoopy of thesis A ndidte who does not wish to llow the thesis to be lent or photoopied when it is deposited in the Librry under Rule 32 shll mke written pplition to the Diretor, Adelide Grdute Centre, t the sme time s he or she notifies his or her intention to submit under Rule 26. The withholding of suh permission nd the period of time involved shll be determined by the Committee. 34 Grdution Subjet to Chpter 89 of the Sttutes, ndidtes who hve stisfied the requirements for ny wrd of the University shll be dmitted to tht wrd. 35 Posthumous wrd If person dies fter ompleting, or in the opinion of the Committee, substntilly ompleting the requirements of the wrd, the University my onfer the wrd posthumously. 36 Revoking the wrd If the Committee is stisfied tht, when the Mster by Reserh ws onferred on person, the person: or did not possess the relevnt qulifitions b hd not ompleted the neessry requirements, the Vie-Chnellor with uthority devolved to her/him by Counil my revoke the wrd. Upon revotion, the person is tken never to hve reeived the wrd. 37 Return of douments If requested by the Den of Grdute Studies, the reipient of Mster by Reserh must deliver to the University the douments ertifying or evidening the wrd. 38 Generl When, in the opinion of the Reserh Edution nd Development Committee, speil irumstnes

8 exist, the Committee, on the reommendtion of the relevnt Fulty in eh se, my vry ny of the provisions in Rules 1-37 bove.
