1 Interpreting the Men Comprisons Report Smple The Men Comprisons report is bsed on informtion from ll rndomly seleted students for both your institution nd your omprison institutions. 1 Trgeted oversmples (i.e., non-rndomly seleted students) re not inluded in this report. Vribles The items from the NSSE survey pper in the left olumn in the sme order nd wording s they pper on the instrument. The nme of eh vrible ppers in the seond olumn for esy referene to your dt file nd the summry sttistis t the end of this setion. Response options re lso provided to help you interpret the sttistis. Sttistil Signifine Items with men differenes tht re lrger thn would be expeted by hne lone re noted with one, two, or three sterisks, referring to three signifine levels (p<.05, p<.01, nd p<.001). The smller the signifine level, the smller the likelihood tht the differene is due to hne. Sttistil signifine does not gurntee the result is substntive or importnt. Lrge smple sizes (like those produed by NSSE) tend to generte more sttistilly signifint results even though the mgnitude of men differenes my be inonsequentil. It is reommended to strt by interpreting only those items with three sterisks (p<.001) nd to onsult effet sizes (see below) to judge the prtil mening of the results. Items tht omprise the five s of ive Edutionl Prtie re indited by the following: =Level of Ademi Chllenge ACL=Ative nd Collbortive Lerning SFI=Student-Fulty Intertion =Enrihing Edutionl Experienes SCE=Supportive Cmpus Environment Men The men is the weighted rithmeti verge of student responses on prtiulr item. Mens re provided for your institution nd ll omprison groups. For more informtion bout weighting go to: Clss Results re reported seprtely for first-yer students (FY) nd seniors (SR). Institution-reported lss rnks re used. Size size indites the prtil signifine of the men differene. It is lulted by dividing the men differene by the stndrd devition of the group with whih the institution is being ompred. In prtie, n effet size of.2 is often onsidered smll,.5 moderte, nd.8 lrge. A positive sign indites tht your institution's men ws greter, thus showing n ffirmtive result for your institution. A negtive sign indites the institution lgs behind the omprison group, suggesting tht the student behvior or institutionl prtie represented by the item my wrrnt ttention. An exeption to this interprettion is the oming to lss unprepred item (item 1f.) where negtive sign is preferred (i.e., mening fewer students reporting oming to lss unprepred). 1 U.S. institutions inlude only U.S. shools in their omprison groups. Cndin institutions ontin both Cndin nd U.S. institutions.
