13 DNS Settings Page There are five types f accessible DNS recrds: A = Address - This recrd is used t translate hst names t IP addresses. CNAME = Cannical Name - Used t create additinal hst names, r aliases, fr hsts in a dmain. NS = Name Server - Defines an assciatin between a given dmain name and the name servers that stre infrmatin fr that dmain. One dmain can be assciated with any number f name servers. MX = Mail Exchange - Defines the lcatin f where mail shuld be delivered fr the dmain. PTR = Pinter - Defines the IP address and hst name f individual hsts in the dmain. Translates IP addresses int hst names. Yu can access the DNS Settings page by clicking the DNS buttn at the Dmain Administratin page. View Hsting Settings Yu may have hsting privileges established in yur dmain s that yu can prvide varius Internet services (e.g. sftware applicatins, a frwarding address, and FTP transfers). PSA allws three different types f hsting services: Physical Hsting - This is the mst cmmn type f hsting service, creating a virtual hst (disk space n the lcal server) fr the client. The client cntrls and publishes his wn website withut having t purchase a server and dedicated cmmunicatin lines. Standard Frwarding - With this type f frwarding, all requests t the dmain are frwarded by yur server t anther Internet address (n virtual server is created). When an end user searches the Internet fr the client's dmain, he is ruted t anther URL, and the address in his brwser windw changes t the new URL. This may be cnfusing t the end user. Frame Frwarding - All requests t this dmain are frwarded t anther Internet address (n virtual server is created). But with this type f frwarding, the end user sees the client's dmain name in his brwser, nt the frwarding address. PSA uses frames t "trick" the brwser int displaying the crrect dmain name. The prblem with frame frwarding is that sme search engines d nt index frame pages and sme brwsers d nt supprt frames. The system administratr has already perfrmed all the technical system administratin fr hsting services relating t yur dmain; hwever, the type f hsting service set up fr yur dmain determines the extent t which yu can manage yur hsting parameters. If yu have physical hsting, yu can use FTP sftware t access yur hsting directins. Additinally, yu can change the FTP passwrd. If frame r standard frward hsting is set fr this dmain, than yu can change (r tggle between these tw types) frwarding fr the given dmain. 158

They are cnfigurable nly by the Administratr r the Client: FTP services. Yu may want t change the passwrd ccasinally fr security purpses. FrntPage supprt SSI PHP CGI md_perl Apache ASP SSL Web statistics Apache ErrrDcs Frwarding Cnfiguratin If yu have either f the tw frwarding ptins defined fr yur hsting services, standard r frame, then yu can change between the tw types f frwarding. Als, yu can edit the URL t which dmain transactins are re-directed r frwarded. 1. T change the type f frwarding yu have, frm the Hsting page, click n the type yu want t change. There yu will need t either cnfirm the remval (check the checkbx and click SUBMIT) r CANCEL it. Imprtant Ntes n web users: Fr security purpses, the passwrd must be between 5 and 14 characters and cannt cntain the user name. Each web user creates a system accunt within Apache; therefre, yu cannt have tw web users with identical names n the same server. New web users can access the directry using FTP sftware by entering the dmain name under which the web user accunt was created and using the apprpriate web user name and passwrd. Yur administratr CAN limit the number f web users yu can create. Yu will receive a warning if yu try t exceed this number, and will nt be able t d s. Prtected Directries This feature is active if virtual hsting (physical hsting accunt) has been cnfigured fr yur dmain. It creates secure directries in yur virtual dmain, in which t place dcuments. Secure directries are recmmended t ensure security f cnfidential and private infrmatin. It is pssible t create directries under either the standard virtual hst accessible via http prtcl, r if applicable fr the given dmain, under the SSL virtual hst accessible via https prtcl. Icns are used next t each directry name in the directry list t define which virtual hst type (SSL r nn-ssl) the directry resides within. An pen lck depicts nn-ssl; a clsed lck depicts SSL. 26 DAEMON A daemn is a cntinually running prgram in Unix that handles service requests as they are received by a cmputer. The daemn sends service requests t ther prgrams as needed. Fr example, every Web server has an HTTP daemn that receives user requests fr services and infrmatin. Anther example is the sendmail daemn that handles e- mail messages. DNS DNS, shrt fr Dmain Name Server, is a distributed database that maps names and IP addresses fr cmputers using the Internet. DNS is a standardized system that identifies dmain name servers. Dmain A dmain is a virtual address n the Internet fr any rganizatin r entity. Technically, a dmain is a grup f netwrked cmputers (servers) that represent an rganizatin and prvide netwrk services. Hwever, several dmains culd reside n ne server, in dedicated space prvided by a Web hsting service. T the Internet user, a dmain appears as space n ne server, regardless f the implementatin. Dmains are identified by their familiar Internet URL (unifrm resurce lcatr) addresses. Fr example, is the name f the dmain where Plesk infrmatin resides n its servers. Syntactically, a dmain name is a string f names r wrds separated by perids. Fr example, a dmain name such as: hell.huse.neighbrhd.cm includes the names f: the hst: hell the subdmain: huse the netwrk: neighbrhd the rganizatin type: cm Sme high-level dmain names include these rganizatin types: arpa: ARPAnet (a Defense Department cmmunicatins system that established the Internet) cm: Cmmercial, fr-prfit rganizatins and businesses edu: Educatinal institutins gv: Gvernment rganizatins int: Internatinal rganizatins mil: U.
