4 DESCRIBE THE REQUESTED COURSE/PROGRAM ACTION (additional pages may be attached if necessary): Create a second level introductory course in Spanish language at the 100 level to continue to enhance skills and language acquisition. SET FORTH THE RATIONALE FOR THIS PROPOSAL: This proposal is to offer a second introductory course in Spanish language instruction to offer class to UB students. The second level course continues focus on the five skills needed to improve fluency in Spanish: listening, speaking, reading, writing and culture. Once complete, students could then move into more advanced Spanish courses at other universities or potentially at UB. Students currently taking the pilot program in Introductory Spanish 1 offered under the lois 301 number during the Spring 2012 semester are querying about the opportunity to take a second introductory course in Spanish. Once created, we will seek permission to have this course approved for as a general education curriculum component, allowing students to satisfy one course in the Arts and Humanities component of General Education. In addition, creation of this course (and approval for general education credits) will also facilitate transfer of credit in a general education category from other institutions. Currently, students can only transfer these courses as electives and not receive general education credit as UB does not offer language courses. 4

Students will continue to improve their language skills and be able to function in Spanish during situations likely to take place outside the classroom. 8. PREREQUISITES SPAN 125 or equivalent 9. COURSE PURPOSE (how the course is to be used in the curriculum; e.g., required for the major, elective, etc.) Serve as an elective and possible general education class in undergraduate curriculum. Will be used to develop and refine skills in Spanish to enable students to take more advanced Spanish courses. 10.
